The Maps4Science facility will enable the renewal and improvement of the research infrastructure for Geo Information Science. It will also serve as a focal point to combine existing individual efforts in GI Science and to create scientific value beyond these individual abilities. It is therefore with great pleasure that we hereby declare that DANS will support your application at NWO as a member of the Maps4Science consortium. DANS declares with this Letter of Intent to fulfill all obligations attached to it if the proposal is approved. DANS is aware that the production, handling, analysis and integration of geo information are of increasing importance for the academic community. DANS will bring in its expertise on the curation and long-term preservation of research data. This facility will enable us to renew and improve our research methods. It will also serve as a focal point to combine our individual efforts in GI Science and to create scientific value beyond what our individual abilities. It is therefore with great pleasure that we hereby declare that our organization will support your application at NWO as a full member of the consortium. Our organization is the Centre for Educational Training, Assessment and Research (CETAR) of VU University Amsterdam and is one of the leading partners in EduGIS research and development. In the field of GIScience within VU University CETAR co-operates with different faculties like FALW and FEWEB (Spinlab) and institutes like the VU library (Geoplaza). Maps4Science is important to us, because we like to focus at developing GI Science methods and a national GI infrastructure for scientists, students and interested laymen. Maps4Science provides a significant improvement of the current situation as it will help to overcome legal, technical and commercial barriers to use GI data on a national level. We like to be partner in this consortium because we see a lot of benefits for our organization and for the Netherlands science community. This initiative offers easy access to GI data nationwide and helps scientist, educators and students to strengthen their position in the international arena. Maps4Science is an important initiative that will be a crucial enabler for many scientists to improve and extend their research. Maps4Science will enable the Netherlands science community to reach and keep a top-level position in a broad range of science domains. It will allow us to play a leading role in the research and innovation into open, shared, and linked location data and how it can be used in many fields of science. CETAR VU and its GIS partners within VU University can offer a contribution of 25% of costs in kind consisting of data, data engineers, hardware and (EduGIS specific) software.
