1 University of Massachusetts Boston 100 Morrissey Blvd, Boston, MA Office of International and Transnational Affairs (OITA) / Fax: Website: UMass Boston s International Visiting Scholar Academy for Higher Education Administration (IVSA-HEA) Description UMass Boston s International Visiting Scholar Academy for Higher Education Administration (IVSA-HEA) is an executive professional development program with certificate. The purpose of IVSA-HEA is to train current and aspiring college and university administrators interested in learning about the internationalization of the campus in the areas of academic affairs, student affairs, and administrative affairs. IVSA-HEA is an individualized program based on preferences (administrative interests, goals/objectives) indicated on the application (see Appendix). Once accepted, the individual will be assigned to an appropriate executive-internship placement within the university system along with a bi-weekly small-group seminar program provided by the Office of International and Transnational Affairs (OITA). Contents The program focuses on various higher education (HE) administrative leadership issues related to the internationalization of the campus based on the applicant s interests and needs along with topics including the following: Strategic planning for internationalization of the campus The role of the chief executive officer of internationalization of the campus (vice-president, associate/vice provost level) Administrative Leadership in Internationalization of Academic Affairs (e.g., faculty affairs [faculty hiring, professional development, assessment, teaching, research, services, grant writing, various forms of scholarship, faculty study-abroad program, etc.]; curriculum and degree program
2 transformation; infusion of global urban service learning into the curriculum; student study-abroad and exchange program development, study-abroad pre-departure orientation, on-site orientation and monitoring, re-entry program, and post-study-abroad programming; accreditation; international students and visiting scholars academic adjustment and advising for retention and academic success; educational technology; etc.) Administrative Leadership in Internationalization of Student Affairs (e.g., student support programs; social adjustment and development of international students; intercultural communication; counseling services for mental health, physical health; public safety issues and awareness; intercultural education for diverse culture and language; program devel opment for the inclusive interaction of international and domestic students, etc.) Administrative Leadership in Internationalization of Administrative Affairs (e.g., international linkage building and MOU development; strategic planning and assessment; financial management; recruitment of international students, admission, registration, retention, and academic success; institutional technology; staff training; fundraising, public relations, and development; community engagement, etc.) Internationalization of research and development Internationalization of undergraduate education Internationalization of graduate education Internationalization of post-graduate education Internationalization of the campus with regards to the offices of institutional research, venture development, enrollment management, public relations and development, research and grants, budget and finance, registrar, admission, academic advising, etc. International networking with various HE institutions and organizations (governmental and non-governmental) Individual research project or administrative leadership project
3 Application Information Eligible applicants: Individuals currently serving as or aspiring to become HE administrators in university settings, including HE administration graduate students with an interest in learning about internationalization of the campus in the areas of academic affairs, student affairs, and administrative affairs. Duration: 3 6 months, depending on the individualized plan. Application due date: Open. Candidate must apply for the program 6 months prior to arrival at UMass Boston for the IVSA-HEA program to secure an appropriate executive-internship slot. Fee: $3,000 USD. (Note1: Fee covers program materials, handouts, Internet access, guest speaker honoraria, receptions, refreshments for each workshop, space rental, mini-conference, services for assigning/matching administrative office for an executive internship during the visiting program, expenses for the closing ceremony/reception, certification, JI visa-processing services, etc.) (Note 2: Room & board [i.e., lodging and meals] and airport pick-up service are not included in the IVSA-HEA fee. These are individual scholar s own responsibilities; however, the Office of International and Transnational Affairs (OITA) will provide information regarding local housing agents, directions from the airport to the UMass Boston campus, and local transportation using the T, Boston s safe and convenient subway system. One of the subway lines [the Red line] takes passengers to the UMass Boston campus. A direct shuttle service from the subway station UMass Boston/J.F. Kenney Library & Museum runs to the Campus Center.
