Current State ò According to Russell (2015), Online Learning has been identified as a solution to expand program capacity and increase access to nursing education by several organizational papers by IOM (2003, 2009 & 2011) and AACN (2000, 2003 & 2014). ò No organization is collecting data on number of online courses or programs in nursing education. Russell, B. (2015)The Who, What and How of Evaluation within Online Nursing Education: State of the Science. Journal of Nursing Education. 54 (1),
Current State As noted by Kolowich (February 2, 2010), ò The number of fully online R.N. to B.S.N. programs in America has grown by more than a third in the last two years according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing from 96 in 2007, when the association first started collecting data on online program, to 129 in ò Kolowich, D. Online Cure for the Nursing Crisis. nursing
Current State ò AACN Fact Sheet---Currently, 692 RN to BSN programs are available nationwide, including more than 400 offered at least partially online. ò January 2014 Report ò degree-completion-programs
Emerging Technologies ò To illustrate emerging technologies that are now available online ò Remember students live in the Connected Age and expect their education to be Connected Learning and recognize Connected Health opportunities ò Present a nursing student who is contemplating an online program for her BSN.
Meet Carissa
Carissa s Education Carissa is working as an LPN and is interested in choosing a pathway to a BSN. She is exploring the potential of an online BSN as the local community college has an associate degree only but she may be able to complete her general education requirements there.
Colleagues Views ò Distance education is inferior, the quality of education is poor.going to a classroom is the gold standard ò How can you learn when you just listen to lectures or view PowerPoints? ò How can you talk with the professor when you are having problems with understanding the material? ò Does taking a quiz, writing a 25 page paper and posting two messages per week really prepare you for the workforce?
Carissa s Quest ò Informed Consumer ò Accessible, Flexible, & Affordable ò Student Supports & Pre-Requisites ò Full advantage of being connected ò Active Learning, virtual care, networking and connections to the campus and beyond ò Distant clinical, IP collaborative care
Online Search
Pre-requisites & Remediation ò What is available to help me in my transition? ò How can I brush up on some content the may help me transitioning to these courses? ò Do any of the schools require pre-requisites for credit or can I demonstrate competency or present certificates or badges?
What is a MOOC? Massive: A typical classroom holds 30 students. An auditorium holds 300. A MOOC can go exponentially beyond these numbers, to thousands and hundreds of thousands. Open: Available for free to anyone willing and able to participate, regardless of geography. Online: Anyone with access to the internet can participate anywhere in the world. Course: A sequence of lessons sharing the knowledge of the instructor and the group. The possibilities are endless.

Choices for Discussion
Connected Learning
Connecting (Oblinger, 2013) ò Connecting is about reaching out & bringing in, about building synergies to create a whole better than the sum of its parts. Connecting is a powerful metaphor. Everyone and everything people, resources, data, ideas are interconnected Linked Tweeted Followed Tagged Texted Friended
Connected Age-Abel, Brown & Suess (2013) It is an environment that offers new ways to connect things that were previously considered disparate and unconnectable. People Experiences Diverse Content Communities Resources
Connected Age (Abel, Brown & Suess, 2013) ò It is an environment that offers new ways to connect things that were previously considered disparate and unconnectable. Experts Formal Mentors Novices Informal Advisors
Virtual Office Hours
Support Services ò Online Student Concierge ò Access to library resources-interlibrary loan & full text journal articles, e-books and e-reserves, tutorials ò Badging for online students ò Virtual Mentors ò Virtual Writing Center-drop box, 1 on 1 consult, tutorials ò Virtual Orientations for all services
Student Engagement & Alumni
Clinical Coursework ò What opportunities are there for distant clinical and finding a preceptor? ò What opportunities are there for interprofessional collaborative practice? ò What simulation opportunities are available? ò How can I practice some interviewing skills? ò Are there any opportunities to experience virtual visits or use other technology tools that are relevant to rural practice?
Distant Clinical Experiences
Distant Clinical Experiences
Distant Clinical Experiences ò Use of Google Glasses to augment a clinical encounter
Simulations ò Virtual Clinical Excursions and Sim Chart (EHRs) Elsevier ò Virtual Community Clinic Learning East Carolina University ò Pearson s Neighborhood 2.0 -online virtual community complete with stories, activities, and case studies on more than 40 characters provide a 360 -view of a client s life. ò Simulation Experiences at nearby facilities-ahec model
Virtual Care Simulation ò University has an IP Collaborative Care Practice Plan in a Virtual Clinic
Virtual Clinical Visits
Virtual Conferences
Virtual Care IPE ò Nursing, Medical Students, Physical Therapist, Social Worker and PharmD student

Virtual Clinical Conferences
Connected health ò an umbrella term to lessen the confusion over definitions of telemedicine, telehealth and mhealth. ò Emerging disruptive technologies that has the potential to transform the health care delivery system. ò Iglehart (2014, p. 2)
Connected Health ò Connected Health is about connecting patients, families and caregivers to the person s health data and their providers at the Point of care. The point of care is now not just within the walls of a health care environment.and through wireless connections it is inclusive of Digital Tools Social Media E-Patients Mobile apps Patient Portals PGHD
Connected Health
Virtual Visits
ECAR 2014 Student & IT Study 85% of students took at least a few blended courses 72% of students some online components are preferred for learning The number of online component depends on age, full or part time status and on-campus vs. off-campus. Older students, part time and off campus are more likely to prefer totally online courses.
Blended Learning ò Studies are showing there is some evidence to support blended learning. So for nursing, can blended mean taking online didactic, simulations but have faceto-face clinical experiences?
Summary
Horizon 15 Report
Opportunities ò Administrators report that online education is critical to long term strategy for their institutions. (Allen & Seaman, 2015) ò IOM & AACN support to increase access to nursing education ò Growing Body of evidence and Standards ò Extensive technologies to immersive, engage and cultivate an active and interactive learning environment to foster critical thinking and clinical reasoning. Allen, E. & Seaman, J, (February 2015). Grade Level: Tracking online education in the US. Available at:
Challenges ò Faculty Acceptance ò Faculty Workload ò Online learning formats vary ò Student Discipline & Retention ò Infrastructure Supports ò Effectiveness Research ò Adoption of Quality Standards
