2 Workshop Presenters Mark Senechal Starting a Contemporary Music Ministry from Scratch Making the Transition from Music Director/Performer to Worship Leader Praise Band coaching Mark has served Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kingwood, TX, for over 15 years leading a worship and music ministry involving approximately100 adults and teens. Previously he served for 9 years as a Lutheran high school music teacher in Florida and California. Although a versatile musician with skills in varying music styles as a conductor, trumpeter, vocalist, keyboardist and arranger, he considers his first calling is leading people into God s presence in worship, and then stepping out of the way. He and his wife Susan are the parents of 10-year old Matthew and 8-year old Brianna, and enjoy sharing the God-sized story of their journey as adoptive parents. Susan and Mark are well over halfway to their lifetime goal of visiting all 58 National Parks in the United States. Dr. Patricia Burnham Reading and Improvising from Lead Sheets for Keyboardists Dr. Patricia Griggs Burnham is the Director of Programs in Music at Concordia University Texas and Assistant Professor of Music. She has served on the music faculty since She has held other university positions at the Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA and a graduate teaching assistant at the Catholic University of America. Dr. Burnham received her Doctorate of Music Arts degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. where she studied Piano Performance and Pedagogy. She holds a Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and a Master of Music Education from the Florida State University, and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Old Dominion University. Her teachers include Marilyn Neeley, Barbara Maris, Marvin Blickenstaff, Carolyn Bridger and Victoria McArthur. Dr. Burnham is an active performer as a soloist, accompanist or in collaboration with chamber groups. She enjoys all facets of performing, most especially chamber music. Other professional activities include adjudication for the National Piano Guild and the National Federation of Music Clubs; appearances in Master Classes and Pedagogy Clinics, workshops at church music conferences; reviews for professional music publications, church work as pianist/keyboardist and choral accompanist for traditional and blended services; and private studio teaching. She has been recorded on Concord Records with guitarist Carlos-Barbosa-lima, and her solo CD was recorded in 2003.

3 Dr. Ellen Johnson Early American Hymns: A tradition of change Ellen C. Johnson is an Adjunct Professor of Music at Concordia University in Austin, TX, teaching woodwinds, chamber music and music history courses. She received a Doctor of Musical Arts in flute performance at Florida State University (2009) and performance degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (M.M. 2005) and Wichita State University (B.M. 2003). Dr. Johnson is a founding member of the Faculty Trio at Concordia University, the Florida Baroque Flute Ensemble, and serves the Austin Flute Club as its Vice-President. For more information please visit: Dr. Karla Hamelin A vibrant performer and innovative teacher, Canadian cellist Karla Hamelin is a recent graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with a Doctorate of Musical Arts in cello performance. While a doctoral student, she was the teaching assistant to Professor Phyllis Young and taught in The University of Texas at Austin String Project. Before pursuing the doctorate degree she attended the University of Michigan and earned a Masters of Music degree in cello performance under the tutelage of Anthony Elliott. An accomplished performer, Karla is a frequent recitalist that appears regularly as a collaborative artist. She has worked with numerous artists in other disciplines including composers, dancers, choreographers, visual artists, poets, and actors as well as studio musicians. Her ability to play a broad and diverse spectrum of repertoire has made her in demand as a performer of new works, a sought after chamber musician, as well as a featured artist in a baroque cantata series. Presently, Dr. Hamelin is the Assistant Professor of Cello at Concordia University Texas and Texas Lutheran University. Since the fall of 2006, she has also been on faculty at the Austin Chamber Music Center. In demand as a private teacher, Karla has quickly established herself as a highly respected pedagogue whose students have consistently placed in all state and regional orchestras and have also been prize winners in state and national competitions. Her commitment to teaching and music education is evident in the high level of dedication and playing demonstrated by her students. For more information please go to

4 Joshua Chai The L Word: A revival of liturgy Technological and Online Resources for Worship Joshua Chai is the Director of Choral Activities at Concordia University Texas, where he conducts the University Choir and teaches courses in music theory, conducting, and corporate worship is his first year here at Concordia; previously, he was on faculty at Concordia University Irvine in southern California, directing three choirs and teaching courses in music technology and music appreciation. He was also the Minister of Music at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Lake Forest, CA, planning all church worship events and administrating the music department. A native of southern CA, Joshua received his M.M. from California State University, Long Beach, received the departmental award for choral studies both years he attended, and studied under Dr. Jonathan Talberg. His undergraduate degree was from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where he double-majored in music and mathematics and participated in number of musical groups, including jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles, and the St. Olaf Choir. A freelance tenor, organist, and collaborative pianist, Joshua is also an avid composer. He recently published an SATB choral composition on an ee cummings text, "since feeling is first", with Pavanne publishing. His original compositions have been premiered by several sacred and secular ensembles, including the Chamber Choir at CSU Long Beach and the Southern California Children's Chorus. Susan Stone-Taborn Vocal Health for All Singers Susan is an Adjunct Professor of Music at Concordia University Texas, where she teaches private vocal instruction as well as Vocal Technique. Rev. Dr. Bruce Peffer Rev. Peffer is the Campus Pastor at Concordia University Texas, where he teaches classes in theology and worship and supervises the campus worship experiences.

5 Anthony Celia Leading Worship in the Real World A Church Plant Perspective Anthony Celia is the worship leader of a successful church plant in Frisco, Tx called Water s Edge Frisco and is a recent graduate of Concordia University Irvine. In the last year Anthony has learned a lot about what it takes to be successful in real life ministry through two huge transitions. The first transition was his journey from college life to the real world, and the second was moving from leading and serving in an established and comfortable music program to a vibrant church plant that is always growing, changing and morphing in amazing ways. Anthony is excited to share his experiences and what he has learned from leading worship in a world and culture that is ever changing. Chris Spencer The Electric Guitar in Modern Worship Chris Spencer is a dedicated Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter/Clinician with a consistently high record of achievement in music, academics, and community service. Currently touring as a guitarist for national recording artist, Granger Smith. On staff at Regents School of Austin as the Guitar Instructor for the Fine Arts Department, and performs at various churches, including Austin Stone Community Church. Also a clinician for Musico a Musico, an international ministry rooted in worship music instruction. Chad Taylor Sound 101 / Sound 102 Chad is a professional sound engineer and consultant, who has assisted a wide variety of churches and events in designing and implementing live sound design. Emily Sager Liturgical Dance Emily is a fourth year education major at Concordia University. She is a member of Point of Grace Lutheran Church and has been a part of developing a Worship Dance team for the past year. She has a dance background in all forms (ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, etc) of dance and has loved it since a young age.
