1 DATA SHEET Network Availability Improvement Support Functional Area Analysis Functional Area Analysis delivers a targeted, in-depth analysis that identifies critical fault, configuration, performance, security, and design conformance gaps, and offers recommendations for improvement. SERVICE OVERVIEW A highly available network is essential to meeting your service commitments and business goals. Just a few minutes of downtime can impact customer loyalty and revenue, and can result in negative publicity, costly emergency repairs, staff overtime, and service-level agreement (SLA) penalties. Although 100 percent availability is impossible to guarantee, you can achieve five nines percent availability by proactively identifying and resolving conformance gaps within critical functional areas of your network. But such efforts require a degree of networking experience and skill that your staff may not possess. Cisco Systems can help. Cisco Advanced Services engineers are experts in high-availability and operational management. They take advantage of this expertise, as well as their years of experience improving the functionality of enterprise and service provider networks worldwide, as they assist you with gap-related projects. This type of support during the optimization phase of your network lifecycle can improve network efficiency and availability, expedite the deployment of new applications, and speed your return on investment (ROI). Areas of Analysis Functional Area Analysis offers a professional engineering analysis that focuses on a single functional area of your network. The functional areas, listed below, were selected based on research identifying them as most likely to be noncompliant with recommended industry-standard practices. By targeting the fault, configuration, performance, security, and design areas of your network, the Functional Area Analysis service can help you increase network availability and operational efficiency and quickly deploy new revenue-generating applications. 2 Network resiliency Fault management Problem management Configuration management Change management Performance management Availability management Provisioning management New solution deployment Security management PREPARATION FOR FUNCTIONAL AREA ANALYSES Prior to your first Functional Area Analysis, Cisco Advanced Services engineers conduct an Operational Readiness Assessment, which helps expose potential operational issues and prevent errors that could contribute to network downtime and outages. The engineers also review your Network Management Architecture Roadmap; if a roadmap is not available, they help you develop one. Efforts may include onsite meetings to discuss your network management processes, a review of planned and anticipated network changes, and an assessment of the tools and systems required to manage those changes. When the Network Management Architecture Roadmap is complete, the functional area analyses can begin. FUNCTIONAL AREA ANALYSIS For each Functional Area Analysis, Cisco Advanced Services engineers go on site to conduct research, examine technical details, and gather and measure data for the selected functional area. They use this information to identify conformance gaps and to develop recommendations that can help you close those gaps, minimize downtime caused by errors, and achieve your network availability and operational efficiency goals. At the end of each analysis, Cisco Advanced Services engineers incorporate all their findings and recommendations into a report, which is presented to you in person. 3 Activities and Deliverables Develop Network Management Architecture Roadmap Develop a Network Management Architecture Roadmap prior to the first Functional Area Analysis, and modify it as each Functional Area Analysis is performed.* Conduct Interviews Interview the appropriate operations and engineering personnel in an onsite research and fact-finding engagement focused on the targeted functional area. Analyze System Locations Analyze system locations relative to the managed devices on the network and the ability of the system to recover from a network management system hardware failure. Analyze Systems and Devices Benefits Helps speed network availability and operational efficiency improvements Provides greater insight into your network by helping you examine specific areas in depth Helps you to optimize the functions of critical areas of your network Accelerates the network improvement schedule, expediting the deployment of new applications and helping enable faster ROI Augments your knowledge and speeds gap closure by enabling you to discuss gap findings and recommendations directly with Cisco engineers Helps you achieve desired availability targets Helps minimizes errors that contribute to downtime Analyze the hardware, functions, and software specifications of each system and device in the network management architecture. Gather Data Gather data with which to measure current process effectiveness in the targeted functional area. Conduct Reviews and Attend Meetings Review systems; review process documentation; and attend standing meetings. Analyze Gaps Analyze identified gaps and recommend corrective steps for resolving them. Capture Analysis Findings Capture the analysis findings in a report that includes detailed recommendations and a final version of the Network Management Architecture Roadmap.
