1 Louis refused to fly, so everywhere the band went they would have to take a train or drive! Louis Prima was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was an active trumpeter, band leader, singer, composer, and sometime film star. He was the son of Italian immigrant parents. Prima composed many famous songs such as Sing, Sing, Sing and Jump, Jive, and Wail. Dixieland, Jazz, and Rock and Roll were strong influences on his compositions. He provided the voice for the orangutan King Louie in Disney s The Jungle Book and sang the film s song, I Wanna Be Like You. 2 Lesson Plan for Sing, Sing, Sing By Louis Prima Standards Addressed: Standard 1 Students will perform music written by others and understand the basic elements of music in their performance. Standard 3 Responding to and Analyzing Works of Art. Standard 4 Students will develop a listening repertoire of music of various genres, styles and will understand the functions of music within the culture. Performance Indicators- Students will read and perform simple musical patterns, maintaining good pitch and rhythm. (1b and c) Students will move to a steady beat and move to indicate major or minor tonality. (3b) Objectives- Through instruction, practice and performance, students will recognize the difference in major and minor tonality. Materials Needed- copies or overhead of major and minor scale steps copies or overhead of major and minor tonal patterns (rhythm only or rhythm and pitch) recording of Sing, Sing, Sing by Louis Prima (Next Generation SWING CD) CD player/stereo system VHS tape of Jungle Book video Limited Edition (includes Making of at the end of the video) Optional: VHS tape of Swing Kids (There is a section that shows young people swing dancing to Sing, Sing, Sing. Please preview the section before as there is some objectionable material just after the segment.) VCR and TV Listening Repertoire- Recording of Sing, Sing, Sing by Louis Prima Prior Knowledge- Students should have the ability to read basic rhythmic patterns and optional tonal patterns. Students should be familiar with singing in solfege. Students should be familiar with syncopation.

3 Procedures Singing scales to hear the difference between major and minor. Sing a major scale in the key of G using solfege with or without hand signs. Show top portion of sheet with major scale written on scale steps. Show bottom portion of sheet with minor scale written on scale steps and have students sing the scale starting on (be sure to use the relative minor E). Patterns: singing a familiar tune in both major and minor Have students sing patterns using the major scale steps as a visual aid for the song, Hot Cross Buns. Switch to the minor scale steps and change the song into minor. Discuss the difference in sound and feeling between major and minor. Sing patterns in solfege from the song Sing, Sing, Sing (patterns have simplified rhythm). Use given patterns on sheet but teach patterns first by rote and then using either rhythm notation only or pitch with rhythm notation (depending on reading ability of your students). Be sure to indicate the difference between the major and minor sections and that the major patterns are centered around Do and the minor patterns are centered around. Listening Play the introduction to the song for the students and ask where they have heard it. (Chips Ahoy commercial) Ask what type of dancing goes with this music. (Swing) Read background info on Louis Prima and show video segment from end of Jungle Book video (Orangutan King Louis character). Have students listen to the syncopated rhythm of the introduction and pat to the steady beat. When the melody begins (no lyrics), have the students sing the solfege patterns along with the melody (the rhythm is in Swing and slightly different from the patterns) be sure to point out the major vs. minor sections. Rewind the CD to have students practice singing the patterns again during the instrumental section. During the lyrics section, have students do the following movement during the minor section: 4 steps to the right, 4 steps to the left and repeat 3 times On the Major section have the students change from sideways to front and back movement: 4 steps forward, 4 steps backward and repeat once Ask students to sit and pat the steady beat on the rhythm improvised sections. When the melody comes back, ask them to move as before, sideways for minor and front/back for major. Assess their understanding of the difference in tonality by their movement.
