2 DOCTOR DISCUSSION GUIDE FOR DIABETES Talking to Your Doctor About Neuropathy Diabetes can cause problems from head to toe literally. About half of all s have some form of nerve damage, or neuropathy, with feet being one of the most common trouble spots. Keeping your blood sugar under control is the most important step toward protecting yourself from neuropathy and related complications. The American Diabetes Association also recommends that all people with diabetes have a comprehensive foot exam either by a doctor or by a foot specialist (podiatrist) at least once a year. In addition, your feet should be checked for sores, cracked skin, calluses, blisters, and bone and joint abnormalities at every office visit. If you already have neuropathy, you ll likely be referred to a podiatrist or other specialist for monitoring and treatment. This guide isn t a replacement for those important doctor s visits. But with specific questions to ask your doctor about neuropathy and general communication tips, it will help you get the most out of those appointments. What to Bring to Every Check Up A record of your most recent blood sugar readings A list of all medications you re taking, including any vitamins, over-the-counter medicines, supplements and herbal products Notes on any changes in your condition, complications, problems or questions Questions to Ask Your Doctor Your time with your doctor is limited, so preparing a list of questions can help you make the most of your time together. List your questions from most important to least important in case time runs out. For neuropathy, some basic questions to ask your doctor include: Is diabetes the most likely cause of my neuropathy symptoms? Do I need to be tested to confirm the cause of my symptoms? Do these tests require any special preparation? Is neuropathy temporary or long lasting? If I control my blood sugar, will these symptoms go away? What can I do to manage my blood sugar and prevent complications? Do I need to take insulin or other types of diabetes medication? What changes should I make to my diet? Would it be beneficial for me to see a registered dietician? Copyright 2011 Diabetes Connect Page 1
3 Would losing weight help? If so, what can I do to lose weight? How much exercise should I be getting? Are there any treatments for neuropathy available, and which do you recommend for me? What side effects are related to this treatment? I have other health conditions. How can I best manage my neuropathy and them together? Are there any brochures or other printed material that I can take home with me? What websites do you recommend to learn more about neuropathy? Do I need to see any other doctors, a certified diabetes educator or a dietitian? When to See a Doctor Seek medical care if you notice: A cut or sore on your foot that doesn t seem to be healing, is infected or is getting worse Unusual burning, tingling, weakness or pain in your hands or feet that interferes with your daily routine or your sleep Dizziness Changes in your digestion, urination or sexual function These symptoms don t always indicate nerve damage, but they may signal other problems that require medical care. In either case, early diagnosis and treatment offer the best chance for controlling symptoms and preventing severe problems. How to Communicate Effectively with Your Doctor Actual face-time with your doctor can be precious little. You may wait for weeks for an appointment and then go through what feels like a whirlwind visit only to leave with more questions than answers about your symptoms and other health concerns. Studies show the average amount of time patients spend with the doctor is about 20 minutes. Since this is your time with the doctor, make the most of it by asking important questions and expressing concerns. Communicating effectively with your doctor will allow you to share information and work together to make the best decisions about your health, resulting in the best possible care for you. Below are some tips for getting what you need from your doctor s visits. Copyright 2011 Diabetes Connect Page 2
4 Be prepared. Before your appointment, write down your questions, items to discuss and any changes in your condition. Make a list of things that have happened since your last visit and think about ways to describe your complications and symptoms. If you are organized you can make the best use of your time and your doctor s expertise. In addition to bringing your notes and questions, try bringing these things with you: A record of your daily blood sugar tests or you glucose meter with the stored information. A list of medicines you re taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements Consider bringing a family member or friend. Having someone along can help you relax and remember to ask the right questions. They can also help you remember what the doctor told you. Be confident. Don t be afraid to ask questions. If something is confusing ask the doctor to explain more clearly. Be honest. Make sure your doctor knows the whole story, including the extent of your pain, worries and any treatment or medication you are taking on your own. Don t be embarrassed to share details. Take notes. Write down important information or instructions, so you can remember the doctor s advice later. Prioritize your concerns. Remember that you have limited time. Start with the most important topics for which you really want answers. You can always follow up with nurses or with a phone call later for smaller issues. Repeat key points. Repeating things will help your doctor to clarify anything that has been confusing and will help you remember what has been discussed. Copyright 2011 Diabetes Connect Page 3
