2 The Department of Curriculum and Instruction Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction is designed for educators who would like a graduate degree in education and are primarily interested in teaching. The program has been designed to cover a core of professional and academic courses and to allow the student to build expertise in a particular area of interest. The Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction requires a minimum of 45 units post- baccalaureate coursework. This program is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The following is general information on this program. Prospective students are encouraged to contact Curriculum and Instruction for advising on specific program needs. Prior to taking courses: 1. Apply to the University 2. Arrange to be interviewed by the department chair. Admission Requirements: 1. Provide official evidence of a four year bachelor s degree with an overall grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher on a 4.0 scale from an accredited college or university. 2. Submit a Graduate programs application to La Sierra University. Request transcripts and recommendations as required on the application form. 3. Provide a graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test score if undergraduate GPA is below Provide three references from individuals who know you well. (See admission application) 5. Provide evidence of English language proficiency and writing ability. International Students are expected to meet the English proficiency requirements for admission to the University. 6. Submit a resume that outlines pertinent academic and professional activities along with an essay describing the goals you intend to achieve by completing the program. 3 After Acceptance: 1. See department secretary in room 118A to receive form to fill out to have an advisor assigned to you. 2. With your advisor, plan your program of study. Other requirements during the Program: 1. Check with your advisor periodically to be sure you are still taking the correct courses. 2. Maintain GPA of at least 3.0 throughout the program. 3. After taking 40 units, apply for graduation in the Curriculum and Instruction office. 4. After 42 units, take the Comprehensive Examination. 5. Successfully complete the Comprehensive Examination at the end of the Master s coursework. 6. Successfully complete a Master's thesis or project. Graduation: 1. Order cap and gown 2. Pick up cap and gown from Bookstore 3. Attend Educator Dedication Day 4. Graduate Master of Arts - Curriculum and Instruction 3
