REVIEW YOUR BUSINESS IDEA Determine whether business expansion meets enough of your personal and professional goals to put the time and energy into researching the business idea's viability. There are many resources available for this including: VERMONT SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER (VtSBDC) SERVICE CORPS OF RETIRED EXECUTIVES (SCORE) VERMONT WOMEN S BUSINESS CENTER (VWBC) 3. OBTAIN NEW PROFESSIONAL LICENSING AS NEEDED Depending on your profession, you may need to apply for the privilege of engaging in a new or additional profession, or occupation with the State of Vermont. 2 PARTNERSHIP (GENERAL, LLP, OR LP) 5. CHANGE YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS NAME, OR ADD A DOING BUSINESS AS (DBA) NAME. Choosing and registering all business names being used is a key step to legally operating your business and potentially obtaining financial aid from the government. a. TO CHANGING YOUR BUSINESS NAME: You must first apply for and receive approval from the Vermont Secretary of State, please see the following link to find out how to do so: b. TO ADD A DOING BUSINESS AS (DBA) NAME TO YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS NAME: You must file a Trade Name Registration: (1) For Corporations (profit, nonprofit, and cooperative) and Limited Liability Companies (LLC/PLC/L3C): (2) For all Partnerships (general, LLP, and LP) and Mutual Benefit Enterprises (MBE): 6. OBTAIN NEW OR ADDITIONAL EMPLOYER ID NUMBERS (EIN) AS NEEDED. INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (IRS) FEDERAL EMPOYER ID NUMER (FEIN) Partnerships and corporations, with or without employees, must obtain an employer identification number. Complete and return Form 4 available from: VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF TAXES STATE EMPLOYER ID NUMBER (SEIN) REGISTER FOR UNEMPLOYMENT AND WORKERS COMPENSATION For information on Unemployment Compensation, Workers Compensation, the regulation of wages and hours, Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Act rules, and State Labor Relations Act Provisions, contact: Worker's Compensation Board: Unemployment Employer Services: MUNICIPAL (CITY/TOWN) PERMITS AND ZONING Before buying a property or signing a lease, contact the city or town clerk where the business will be located to assure your plans conform to local restrictions and to obtain the necessary permits for buildings types and signs. VERMONT PERMIT HANDBOOK can be found in town clerk offices, Vermont state libraries, Department of Environmental Conservation, regional planning commissions, libraries, and VtSBDC offices or online: ENVIRONMENTAL ASSISTANCE OFFICE offers assistance and information on all business environmental and permitting issues EPCRA (Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act) REPORTING: If your facility has chemicals in storage and meets the requirements established in Federal Law 42 USC Chapter 116 and Vermont Statute 20 VSA Chapter vem.vermont.gov/programs/epcra VERMONT SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER offers a heads up on business environmental and permitting strategies and information for all business types SIGNS No outdoor advertising is permitted other than on premise signs with a total area of not more than 150 square feet. INSURANCE CONCERNS Consult an insurance agent about various forms of insurance: liability, fire, automobile, employee health and life, fidelity (insuring your business against employee theft), burglary and vandalism, business interruption, key person insurance, and worker's compensation cost. 15. BANKING CONCERNS Consult a banker about establishing a relationship for checking accounts, your future borrowing needs, credit card acceptance, and other concerns.
