DMTF Standards; A Building Block for Cloud Interoperability Winston Bumpus President, DMTF
Agenda DMTF Overview Building Blocks For Interoperability Open Cloud Standards Incubator
DMTF Developing Standards that Enable Interoperable IT Management DMTF collaborates to develop IT management standards that promote multivendor interoperability worldwide. DMTF is at the center of the systemsmanagement industry, developing standards that are continually improving the IT management landscape. DMTF standards primarily serve: IT Personnel DMTF provides increased choice, reduced cost and improved interoperability for heterogeneous IT management infrastructures. IT Solutions Vendors DMTF standards reduce development and design costs by enabling companies to dedicate resources to growing their own business.

DMTF Technologies DMTF standards provide well-defined, interoperable interfaces that build upon each other; the interrelationships between the DMTF technologies in this diagram build value with each additional layer. July 13,
DMTF Initiatives An initiative combines a management standard with activities designed to promote the standard in the industry and to help vendors develop interoperable solutions based on that standard. The goal of each DMTF initiative is to accelerate the adoption of its associated standard into mainstream acceptance. July 13,

DMTF Releases OVF 1.0 Standard First industry standard to enable interoperability within virtualized environments Enables shipment of pre-configured, ready-to-deploy virtual solutions Accompanied by white paper to support industry education and adoption The goal of standards development is to enable Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to offer improved products that manage a broader range of their customers preferred technology platforms. This is because standards, when designed appropriately, not only prevent ISVs from having to create multiple versions of the same product for each possible environment, but they allow vendors to focus their scarce development resources upon delivering higher value features. - Cameron Haight, Research Vice President, Gartner, Inc. 13 DMTF Builds Interoperability Program for Virtualization Management LAS VEGAS, Nev. - May 4, The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), the organization bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on systems management standards development, validation, promotion and adoption, today announced the formation of its Virtualization Management (VMAN) Forum, a group dedicated to promoting interoperability between products that support the VMAN standards. The forum will develop and conduct programs to determine specification conformance in the areas of system virtualization management, virtual system management, and the open virtualization format. 14 DMTF Open Cloud Standards Incubator DMTF to Develop Standards for Managing a Cloud Computing Environment Open Cloud Standards Incubator Created to Address Management Interoperability for Cloud Systems PORTLAND, Ore. April 27, 2009 The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), the organization bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on systems management standards development, validation, promotion and adoption, today announced that it has formed a group dedicated to addressing the need for open management standards for cloud computing. The Open Cloud Standards Incubator will work to develop a set of informational specifications for cloud resource management. 16 DMTF Incubator Process o The DMTF may establish efforts known as Standards Incubators that allow a set of members to develop specifications which allow cross vendor interoperability in an exploratory fashion. This type of effort has similarities to some vendor led Workshop Processes or other standards body incubation processes. o It is designed to use a review board made up of leadership members which have voting rights for spec approval and addition of other members to the board. July 13, 2009 DMTF Confidential 16
Business Justification The DMTF cloud incubator will enable new enterprise-to-cloud computing management that will support this emerging market. This initiative would provide benefit to our members on several fronts: Enable the use of cloud computing within enterprises and improve the interoperability between cloud platforms via open cloud resource management standards. Increase awareness and support by management systems vendors that develop products to manage cloud resources. Enable cloud service portability. Provide management consistency cross cloud and enterprise platforms. July 13, 2009 DMTF Confidential 17
Incubator Goals The cloud incubator is intending to create a set of informational specifications to advance the industry thinking around cloud interoperability and its management, especially between clouds. July 13, 2009 DMTF Confidential 18
Incubator Scope The DMTF's Open Cloud Standards Incubator will develop a suite of DMTF informational specifications that deliver architectural semantics to unify the interoperable management of enterprise computing and cloud computing. This may include extensions to existing DMTF specifications including: Common Information Model (CIM) Open Virtualization Format (OVF), WBEM Protocols Member submissions and investigation of opportunities for collaboration with other industry standards bodies. The scope of this activity is focused on mainly cloud resource management aspects of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) with some work touching on Platform as a Service (PaaS) including SLAs, QoS, utilization, provisioning and accounting and billing. 21 The Growing Importance of IT Standards With the ever-increasing need for flexibility, availability and performance in today s distributed enterprises, management standards for IT professionals are now more important than ever. Deploying systems, tools and solutions that support management standards helps reduce system management complexity and lower overall IT costs. July 13,
