1 SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL FREMANTLE Wednesday, 23rd March, 2016 Public Speaking Competition For Girls aged years 1

2 Introduction The candidates presentations will be judged by a panel of four judges. The decision of the panel will be final. Purpose The purpose of this competition is to promote Soroptimist International, its Mission and Vision: Soroptimists educating, empowering, and enabling opportunities for women and girls around the world. Public Speaking Public speaking covers many activities. It is an essential part of many professions. At some point in our lives we will all be required to give a speech in public. This might be on a special family or community occasion or in a classroom, business presentation or job interview. Although each of these activities has a different purpose, they all have three common public speaking aims. AIMS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING 1. To Inform According to "Public Speaking: Practice and Performance," the primary purpose of speaking to inform is to share knowledge, to mutually understand, and to answer questions. The success of the speaker's attempt to inform is measured by how well the audience understands, retains and applies the material to their own lives. 2. To Convince To convince an audience is to cause someone to believe something, whether it is a voting interest, a diet choice or controversial topics such as abortion or immigration. Within public speaking, convincing an audience is the speaker's fundamental goal. The implication is that the information was gathered and delivered effectively, and it also paves the way for the third aim, persuading the audience. 3. To Persuade According to Clella IIles Jaffe's book "Public Speaking: Concepts and Skills for a Diverse Society," a speech intended to persuade must cause someone to act in support of the position on a topic. The speaker must therefore be able to inform his audience about a topic and to influence them to agree and sometimes take action. For a person to act upon a belief, her inner belief system must effectively align with the message in the speech, and her passion must be stirred, which requires impeccable material, structure and delivery. Eligibility The competition is open to all women and girls within the age band of years at the time of application. The age should be checked and included on the application form at the time of registration. 2

3 Guidelines and Recording of Presentations The use of props or visual aids is not permitted. Amplifying microphones may be permitted. Microphones may be used for the purpose of recording the speech only. Participants who plagiarise content may be disqualified quotes or statistical evidence will be permitted. Participants who, in the opinion of the Club, act in a manner which would bring themselves or Soroptimist International into disrepute may be disqualified. Duration of Speech Each participant should speak for at least four minutes and no more than six minutes. Marks will be deducted for under or over runs of time. Topics The following topics will be used by the participants: What roles can women or girls play in changing society? How high can a women or girl fly? As a women or girl, what can you do to encourage peace in our time? Are women and girls valued in our world? Marking SI Fremantle will use the marking as detailed at Appendix A to this paper. A master sheet is available to show how marks should be awarded and a sample of a blank candidate s marking sheet is also attached. 3
