1 TO: FROM: GIRLS TENNIS COACH JERRY SCHNIEPP, COMMISSIONER JOHN LABETA, ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER DATE: SEPTEMBER 27, 2016 (REVISED ) RE: 2016 SAN DIEGO CIF GIRLS TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL TENNIS PLAYOFFS OFFICIAL PLAYOFF TENNIS BALL Penn Racquet Sports has graciously entered into an agreement with the CIF-San Diego Section. Penn will be providing all the section playoff tennis balls and will be the official tennis ball for the 2016 CIFSDS Girls Tennis Playoffs. 1. QUALIFYING Team There will be four playoff divisions in the San Diego CIF Girls Team Championships, Open, Divisions 1, 2 and 3. Each league champion (not co-champion or tri-champion) shall be guaranteed entry. The remaining entries shall be selected at-large. If a league champion is not seeded into the playoffs, the champion will host a play-in game versus the lowest- seeded team in that division. If more than one league champion is not seeded, the highest ranking league champion will play the lowest seeded team, the 2nd highest ranked league champion will play the 2nd lowest seeded team, etc. The play-in game will be held prior to the first round game in that sport (Monday, October 24). League champions will host play-in games. League champions will host 1st round games unless playing a higher seeded league champion. This accommodation does not apply to playoffs that begin with the quarterfinal round TEAMS MUST HAVE PLAYED IN 50 PERCENT OF LEAGUE MATCHES AND 50 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL POINTS ALLOWED (TEAMS MUST PLAY IN AT LEAST 10 MATCHES THIS SEASON). Teams are asked to enter all schedules, rosters, and scores into MaxPreps.com AND Homecampus.com. This will allow the Tennis Advisory Committee to check and verify team records to accurately seed all teams in their respective divisions. Rosters must be entered into each website. 1
2 Please ensure that all information is correct. Teams must submit their CIF playoff entry via Homecampus.com by midnight Wednesday, October 19, 2016 Individual All leagues shall enter five singles players and five doubles teams into the single elimination San Diego CIF Girls Individual Tennis Championships. In addition, 5 at-large singles players and 5 atlarge double teams will be selected to complete the draw. Up to 5 alternate singles and doubles entries will be accepted by the Tournament Committee. Those entries will be entered into the draw in order in the event of a default in the first round of play. Entry fee of $10.00 per athlete or $50.00 per team and will be assessed to each school to defray cost of conducting the individual tournament. The school finance office will be invoiced per entries submitted at seeding meeting. The payment of entry fees must be made by December 5, ELIGIBILITY REMINDER: TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CIF TOURNAMENTS, STUDENT- ATHLETES MUST HAVE PLAYED IN 50 PERCENT OF LEAGUE MATCHES AND 50 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL POINTS ALLOWED (PLAYER MUST PLAY IN AT LEAST 10 MATCHES THIS SEASON). *If your athlete has not competed in at least 10 matches the attached waiver form must be submitted and approved for CIF Championships. WEARING APPAREL No San Diego Section tennis team or individual will be permitted to compete unless wearing matching school shirt (may be T-shirt) and shorts or dresses/skirts of a common color. Players shall be dressed identically (doubles teams must be dressed identically, including stripes or patterns on shorts). Team or individuals will default from tournament when discovered in illegal uniform (Green Book Article 270 Special Rules (page 60). 5. TEAM COMPOSITION/ FORMAT Team Each team shall consist of three singles players and three doubles teams. Round Robin: Each participant plays Singles or Doubles but not both. Scoring will be one point for each Singles and one point for each Doubles set won. Ties in match scoring will be resolved by counting games won in Singles and Doubles. If a tie should still exist, sets won in Doubles will determine the winning team. Matches will be one set of regular scoring against each opponent with a 12-point tie breaker played when any set is tied six games each. Individual Format of the matches will be: 1 st Round through semifinals will be best of two tiebreak sets with a match tiebreak to decide the match in the event of split sets The singles and doubles finals will be the best of three tiebreak sets Scoring will be regular scoring unless modified by the Advisory Committee. A 12- point tie breaker will be used whenever a set reaches a 6-6 score. NO PLAYER MAY COMPETE IN BOTH SINGLES AND DOUBLES 6. SEEDING Conducted by Kevin Brown 3
4 Team Each sport has two deadlines for updated schedules and scores to be entered on CIFSDS Home. If a school team does not have schedules and scores entered into CIF Home by the first predetermined deadline, that school will be fined $100 and the team will not be permitted to host a playoff game in that sport during that season. Below are the deadlines for Fall, 2016 sports: Deadline for complete Schedule and up-to-date scores Deadline for complete All Scores entered Girl s Tennis September 23 October 19 10:00 p.m. All teams are expected to enter all scores and schedules in the CIF Home Campus (home-campus.com). Coaches will be contacted during the season if schedules and scores are not updated on a regular basis. The Power Rankings that determine seeding are based on these results and must be entered and updated correctly. Please note that MaxPreps.com and Home-Campus.com do NOT communicate with each other and will not transfer scores and results. Four teams each in Division I, II, and III team tournaments will be seeded, without regard to league champions, by the Commissioner s Office using CIFSDS power rankings as a guide with input from the CIFSDS Girls Tennis Seeding Committee. The seeding meeting for the Team playoffs will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2016, 5:30 p.m., Cathedral Catholic- Assisi Lecture Hall. Teams must submit their CIFSDS playoff entry via Home-campus.com by midnight Thursday October 20, 2016 (Wednesday night). Only advisory committee members shall be permitted to vote during the seeding process. NOTE: The CIFSDS advisory committee will break ties, make sure league champs are entered, check the accuracy of the rankings, identify head to head wins and losses if teams are ranked consecutively Individual - The top one-fourth of the draw in singles and doubles may be seeded by the Commissioner s Office with input from the Advisory Committee. The remainder of the entries will be drawn at random. The seeding meeting for the Individual Tournament will be held on Thursday, November 3, 6:00 p.m., Cathedral Catholic High School, Assisi Lecture Hall. Only members of the Advisory Committee shall be permitted to vote during the individual seeding process. Format of the matches will be: First round through semi-finals will be best of two tiebreak sets with a match tiebreak to decide the match in the event of split sets. The singles and doubles finals will be best the of three tiebreak sets. Scoring will be ad-scoring unless modified by the Advisory Committee. NOTE: Coaches must attend seeding meeting to properly ensure that accurate information is presented. NOTE: Entry fees for individual tournament due by November 14. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the 2016 Individual Tournament (school PO or check only). LEAGUE REPRESENTATIVES: Prior to the seeding meetings, please gather the following: 1. Completed forms (first and last names and grade level for singles and doubles players) for your league entries into the Individual Tournament (forms will be sent to you in the individual seeding meeting notice). 4
5 2. Information provided to you by coaches that will aid the seeding process. 3. All coaches must individual players names and current rankings to Kevin Brown at by Wednesday, November 2, Criteria for Seeding Meetings - To reduce the amount of time needed to select at-large entries and seed the individual tournaments, the advisory committee has established the following criteria (in rank order) for singles, doubles, and at-large selections: Singles (in priority order) a. Southern California Ranking b. Direct Wins 1. Two out of three. 2. Most recent singles set. 3. Singles set win. 4. Coin flip. Doubles a. Direct Wins 1. Two out of three. 2. Most recent doubles set. 3. Doubles set win. 4. Coin flip. At-Large a. Direct Wins 1. Two out of three. 2. Most recent set. 3. Set win. 4. Coin flip 7. STATE CIF RULE 503 E In accordance with State CIF Rule 503 E, athletes will not be permitted to check in at the San Diego CIF Team or Individual Tournaments without being accompanied by a coach or supervisor designated by the school principal. The Tournament Director or Match Director will strictly enforce this requirement. The following penalties shall be invoked for failure of athletes or coaches/ (school designated supervisors) to appear on time: If late for match 5 minutes or less - loss of toss plus one game. 5:01 to 10 minutes late - loss of toss plus two games. 10:01 to 15 minutes late - loss of toss plus three games. More than 15 minutes late - match will be defaulted. SCHOOL DESIGNATED SUPERVISORS (OTHER THAN HEAD VARSITY COACHES) MUST CHECK IN WITH THE TOURNAMENT OR MATCH DIRECTOR WITH A SIGNED PERMISSION SLIP (ATTACHED TO COACH S COPY OF THIS BULLETIN). (NOTE: The permission slips are not to be forwarded to the CIFSDS Office.) 8. WARM-UPS Warm-ups on the court will be confined to a period of five minutes including serves. Coaches will be called upon by the Tournament Management to supervise courts during the warm-up period. 9. OTHER RULES No new match to start after 6:00 p.m. Time between matches is 20 minutes. If a match goes more than three (3) hours, the break times will be at the discretion of the tournament director. 10. CLEAN-UP Each team shall be responsible for the clean-up of its own bench area immediately following the contest. 5
6 11. AWARDS To be presented immediately following the final match, in both Team and Individual Championships. 12. PLAYOFF PARTICIPATION PATCHES Playoff participation patches may be purchased for $11.00 each.
