The Intramural Referee Handbook (Non-Traditional Sports) Rules are applied to all participating SUNY Purchase College Student/Staff/Faculty All Referees must uphold rules and regulation of every intramural sport All Referees must inform Director of any problem, misconducts, and injuries that occur either before, during, or after a game Unsportsmanlike behavior is not tolerated in any intramural sport. You are allowed one warning, if unsportsmanlike behavior continue you will be ejected from the game until further notice At SUNY Purchase Intramural and Recreation we uphold the value of FUN, competitive or not, we want to make sure you are getting the most out of your experience SUNY Purchase Intramural and Recreation welcomes all varsity and non-varsity players to participate in any of the sports we offer Awards and Prizes are given to winning teams of every competitive intramural sport The Sports Rules and Regulations Baggo: PLAYERS 1. Each game will consist of 2-on-2 play GAME PLAY 1. Players will stand on opposite sides of the boards from their partners 2. Teams will alternate throws until all 4 bean bags have been thrown 3. A player may throw from any point behind the front of the board. 4. Any bag thrown from in front of the foul line will not count. 5. A bag-in-the-hole is worth three (3) points 6. A bag coming to rest on the surface of the platform but does not pass through the hole is worth one (1) point. 7. No points are awarded for bean bags that come to rest outside of the surface or in-the-hole; points can be cancelled out by opponents. For example, if team A gets two bags in the hole and team B gets one bag in the hole, team A will be awarded 3 points. 8. The first team to reach 21 points is the winner
Battle Ship: PROCEDURE: 1. The game is essentially dodgeball in boats in the pool. The objective is to hit your opponents and "sink" their ships until they have none left. When that happens, you win that round. Unlike in the boardgame version, only a few can move around in the pool. 2. If your boat gets hit three (3) times then you have been sunk. When that happens, you must get out of the boat, swim to the ladder, get out of the pool and lift the boat out of the pool. 3. You must keep track of the amount of times your boat gets hit. Scoring will be done mostly on an honor system, but the lifeguards will be keeping score as well to avoid cheating. 4. The game will be played on a best-of-three basis. 5. To win the game you must score two (2) round wins. When one team has no boats in the pool, the round is over. 6. The round is also over at the end of the seven-minute time limit. If the round goes to the time limit, the team with the most boats in the water wins that round. At the end of each round, all players/boats will get back in the pool and reset. PLAYERS: 1. There will be five (5) players on each team. One (1) person in each boat. 2. There will be four (4) boats on each team with one (1) person on a float on each side. BOATS: 1. Two (2) big boats- These boats will be stationary near in the pool. You CANNOT move these boats from their starting locations. a. As a result, you will only have a hit scored against you if the boat is hit. Not the person inside. b. The player inside can try to block away any attacks on their boat with their arms. 2. Two (2) smaller boats- These boats can move around their side of the pool, unlike the big boats. a. As a result, a hit will be scored against you if the boat AND/OR the person inside are hit. b. The player inside CANNOT block any attacks. 3. One (1) float- The same rules for the smaller boats apply to the float. Floaters can dive to avoid attacks. PENALTIES: 1. Do not cross over/under the halfway divider. If you cross over/under to get a ball, you will be penalized one hit on your boat. 2. If you already had two (2) hits, you're out. If you extend your arm across the divider in a throwing motion, you will be penalized one hit. 3. Do not get out of the pool under any circumstances unless you have been eliminated. If a ball is out of the pool, do not get it. A lifeguard will retrieve it and throw it back in the pool. 4. Do not get out of your boat under any circumstances unless you have been eliminated. If you do, you will be penalized one hit on your boat.
Bocce Ball: OBJECTIVE: 1. The object of Bocce is to roll your Bocce balls closer to the Pallina (target ball) than your opponent in each game. A match consists of three games. PLAYERS: 1. Bocce can be played with one or two players, always with two teams (one or two player teams). 2. Each player/team member gets two Bocce balls. SET-UP: 1. Players are randomly placed by the Intramural personnel on the tournament bracket. 2. The player listed on the top of the bracket will start the first round. THE GAME: 1. The team controlling the Pallina first throws or rolls the Pallina onto the field to a distance of no less than 5 meters. 2. The Pallina controlling team throws or rolls their first Bocce ball attempting to land its final resting position as near to the Pallina as possible. 3. The other team throws their Bocce balls until they have a ball closer to the Pallina than any other opponent ball so far played or they have used all their team s Bocce balls. 4. Then the first team rolls again until they land a ball nearer to the Pallina than their opponent, or they have used all their team s Bocce balls. 5. Play continues back and forth until each team has used all their Bocce balls. 6. The round is over once all the balls are played. 7. The next round begins from the location of the previous Pallina. LEGAL PLAYS: 1. A player may throw, spin, toss, roll, bounce or otherwise propel their Bocce ball in any manner, as long as it is done with one hand and in a manner that will not be purposefully damaging to the equipment or playing field. 2. A player may knock the opponent s Bocce balls out of place. 3. A player may knock his own Bocce balls into a more advantageous position. 4. A player may use the Bocce to knock the Pallina to a new location. 5. All plays must be made from the same location that the Pallina was thrown from. SCORING: 1. Individual Game: a. A player gets 2 points for winning a game (landing their Bocce ball closer to the Pallina than their opponent). b. And a bonus 2 points for winning a match (best out of three games).
c. There are two possible outcomes for this scoring: i. 1) 6 points to 0 points-one player wins first two games in a row, and no third game is needed. ii. 2) 6 points to 2 points-three games played, one player wins match. 2. Double Player Game: a. A team gets 2 points for winning a game (landing their Bocce ball closer to the Pallina than their opponent). b. And a bonus 2 points for winning a match (best out of three games). c. There are two possible outcomes for this scoring: i. 6 points to 0 points-one team wins first two games in a row, and no third game is needed. ii. 6 points to 2 points-three games played, one team wins match. Human Chess: OBJECTIVE: 1. The object of the game is to win by either a check mate or by capturing the other team s King. SET-UP: 1. The board is similar to a chess board, but downsized for time and space 2. The board is 45 squares (5x9) 3. There will be two rows of players at each end of the board, one team declaring themselves White and the other Black PLAYERS/TEAM: 1. There shall be 11 players to a team. a. 5 Pawns b. 1 King and Queen c. 1 Bishop, Rook, and Knight d. 1 Chess Master 2. When a player is captured, they can become aide to the Chess Master or choose to play a board game until the game is over. THE GAME: 1. The White Team shall go first and then teams will alternate after every one move. 2. There is no skipping turns allowed in the game 3. Teams are give 30 moves to inhibit a checkmate 4. Play will continue until a checkmate or a stalemate, which is when the game ends at draw or runs out of move 5. Kings: are allowed to move exactly 1 space horizontal, vertical, or diagonal
6. Rooks: can move any number of vacant spaces vertically or horizontally 7. Bishops: cam move any number of vacant spaces diagonally 8. Queens: can move any number of vacant spaces diagonally, horizontally, or vertically 9. Knights: can move in a L shape to any vacant spot, being either two squares vertically and one square horizontally or vise versa 10. Pawns: can move forward one square at time if the space is unoccupied. At the start of their turn, however, they are allowed to move two squares forward, but cannot move back. When a Pawn attacks it must be down on a diagonal. 11. Chess Master: Directs the moves of all players. 12. If at any point a team feels they have no chance of staying in the game they are allowed to resign 13. A Draw occurs when there is no possible move left, i.e. King vs. King, King vs. King & Bishop, King vs. King & Knight, etc. 14. A Draw must be agreed upon between both Chess Masters after one makes the offer. 15. Check: Is when one or more players at in lines of attack to a King. The only way to escape check is for a King to move to a square that is not threatened, capture the player who is causing the threat, or have a player block the other player from attack. 16. Checkmate: is when there is no possible way of escape for a King which ends the game. SPECIAL MOVES 1. Castling: Consist of moving the king two squares towards a rook, then placing the rook on the other side of the king, adjacent to it. a. This only permissible under these conditions: i. King and Rook have not had previously moved and must be no players between the King and the Rook ii. King is not currently in check, nor may the king pass through or end up in a square that is under attack by an enemy piece and the King and the Rook must be on the same rank. 2. En Passant: Is Pawn vs. Two Pawns. The single Pawn tries to escape a pawns hit by moving two squares to block another Pawn, but the Pawn to either its left or right can choose to move diagonally one space and attack the pawn from behind. 3. Pawn Promotion: If a pawn advances to its eighth rank it has the option to convert to any other title, except the King. The choice is not limited to who has been captured and it is possible to have all pawns convert to the strongest title. IRREGULATIONS 1. If a player commits an illegal move they must return to their square and they are not allowed to move for at least one turn 2. If a player of the opposing team moves from their square on the other teams turn that player will lose a turn 3. If you are caught out of position at the start of the game, the other team will go first if you are the white team or, if you are the black team, then you will lose your first turn. 4. All rules and regulations are finalized before the start of the game by the referee and any rule broken an unnecessary amount of time or if there are any misconducts the referee must remove the player.
