Biology and environment play an important role in determining the natural variability and beauty in wood. While these natural characteristics can be subtle in unfinished veneers, they may be accentuated by the application of a clear finish. Many designers and architects seek this natural color variation, while others prefer a more uniform look. Attaining a more uniform appearance in veneers - such as maple, birch and ash - can be achieved, in part, by the use of stain color and/or selecting the proper veneer by color. Stain color can be used to enhance the natural beauty of the veneer, it can also be used to mute natural color variations and grain patterns. In general, lighter stain colors make the grain pattern more pronounced, while darker colors usually conceal more of the grain variations. Specifying a select veneer which is inspected, sorted for color, and pattern matched will help in achieving your preferred look.
