2 Economics Major + Marketing Minor Suggested Academic Plan Program Notes: Students may not declare the Marketing minor prior to being accepted to the School of Business as an Accounting, Business Administration, or Economics major. The suggested academic plan is provided to help students observe all related prerequisites and the rotation of offerings. o Not every course must be taken in the semester indicated. (ECON 305 can be taken any semester. Internships can be completed fall, spring or summer.) o Courses are offered every semester except where noted. o To fulfill the requirements in the most efficient manner, students should: Complete the lower-division requirements by the end of the sophomore year (these courses must be completed prior to applying to the School of Business). Take MKTG 331, Marketing, in the fall semester of the junior year. Note, MKTG 334, Advertising and Promotion Management and MKTG 338, Internet Marketing, are only taught in the fall semester and both require MKTG 331 as a prerequisite. Note, MKTG 333 is taught in spring only, and requires ECON 205 and MKTG 331 as prerequisites. Note, Consumer Behavior and Sales Management are normally offered only in the spring semester. Both require MKTG 331 as a prerequisite. Special attention should be given to residency requirements (the minimum number of courses which must be taken at Geneseo). o A minimum of 50% of all courses required for the Economics major must be taken at Geneseo. o A minimum of 9 credit hours of 300 level ECON classes must be taken at Geneseo. o A minimum of 12 credits in the minor must be taken at Geneseo. Marketing (MKTG) and Finance (FNCE) courses formerly carried the prefix MGMT. Students who have completed those courses may still use them toward the Marketing minor. Graduating with Honors in Economics Honors in Economics Students who have successfully completed 90 semester hours and at least 24 hours in Economics may request permission to complete ECON 293 Honors Seminar in Economics I and ECON 393 Honors Seminar in Economics II. Students who successfully complete ECON 393 Honors Seminar in Economics II with a letter grade of B or better, and who maintain at least a 3.3 overall GPA and a 3.3 GPA in Economics courses will graduate with Honors in Economics. To be admitted to the School of Business as a full major, students need a minimum of 36 graded hours of college-level coursework, a 2.50 overall GPA, and a 2.85 GPA in the lower-division economics core requirements. Lower-Division Economics Core Requirements (These classes must be completed with a GPA of 2.85.) MATH 213 or 221 Calculus ECON 110 Introductory Microeconomics ECON 112 Introductory Macroeconomics ECON 205 Business and Economics Statistics Applications are due December 1 or May 1. See the School of Business website or the Office of the Dean in the School of Business (South Hall 100) for details. Students admitted to the School of Business as an Economics major who then wish to change majors to Business Administration or Accounting must meet all of the admission criteria for those majors (include a 2.85 or better GPA in the 25 hours of required lower-division business core classes). Enrollment in 300 and 400-level classes offered through the School of Business is restricted to full majors and select minors with permission. Other policies and residency restrictions apply. 5 MARKETING MINOR The Marketing minor is only open to students who have been admitted to the School of Business as a full Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration major. Pre-majors may not declare a Marketing minor. The Marketing minor prepares students for a variety of career paths through specialized study of all facets of the marketing function in organizations large and small. The courses are designed with a focus on theory and application through realworld projects. Marketing Minor Curriculum 18 credits Required Courses 12 Credits MKTG/MGMT 331 Marketing (3) MKTG 333 Marketing Research (3) Spring Only, Prerequisites: ECON 205 and MKTG (or MGMT) 331 MKTG 334 Advertising and Promotion Management (3) Fall Only, Prerequisite: MKTG (or MGMT) 331 MKTG 338 Internet Marketing (3) Fall Only, Prerequisite: MKTG (or MGMT) 331 Elective Courses, Choose Two from Below 6 credits MKTG 3XX Consumer Behavior (3) Spring Only, Prerequisite: MKTG (or MGMT) 331 MKTG 3XX Sales Management (3) Spring Only, Prerequisite: MKTG (or MGMT) 331 MGMT 395 Internship (3) Prerequisites: 2.75 cum GPA, junior or senior standing, permission of Internship Director Internship Note: Students who choose MGMT 395, Internship, for one of the Marketing minor elective courses must have a marketing internship. The learning activities and experience must be approved prior to starting the internship. No student will be permitted to get credit for a past internship (after the fact) in fulfillment of the Marketing minor. Program Notes: Students should note of all related MATH, ACCT, ECON, FINA, MGMT, and MKTG prerequisites for the Marketing minor requirements. The prefix for marketing courses was formerly MGMT. Students who have completed those courses may still use them to fulfill the requirements for the minor. A minimum of 12 credits in the minor must be taken at Geneseo. See Undergraduate Bulletin for course descriptions and prerequisite requirements. Minimum competency for all courses presented for the minor in Marketing is C-.
