2 Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust We run lots of healthcare services in Birmingham. Healthcare services can be things like a hospital or health centre care at home. For example, health staff who visit older people or families with children help to live well again after a serious injury or health problem. We also run dental services to give people care for their teeth. And we run healthcare services for people with a learning disability. 2

3 This report is about the main things we did in 2011 to 2012 to make healthcare as good as it can be what we are doing in 2012 to Stopping extra health problems Sometimes when people are old or ill they can have extra health problems. We want to stop these problems if we can. We have something called Safety Express. It is a way of checking for these problems in older people and people with a learning disability. We are also doing extra checks for people with a learning disability. You can read about these on page 6. 3

4 These are the health problems we check for with Safety Express 1. Older people falling Older people can fall over more than younger people. This can hurt them a lot. We make sure we give older people a check to see if they may fall in the future information about how to look after themselves. 2. Pressure sores. They can also be called pressure ulcers Pressure sores are sores that can happen on your body if you have to spend a long time in bed or sitting in a chair. Nurses and carers check to see who may get pressure sores give people the right care to stop pressure sores. 4

5 3. People getting ill from catheters Sometimes people can t go for a wee in the usual way. They have something called a catheter fitted. It takes the wee out of their body into a bag. The catheter must be cleaned and changed a lot. If not, people can get ill. We make sure people know how to stop this happening. 4. Blood clots When you cut yourself your blood works to stop the bleeding. But sometimes your blood doesn t work in the right way. 5

6 You can get something inside your body called a blood clot. A blood clot can make you very ill. We check people who may get blood clots tell people how to stop blood clots happening. Extra checks for people with a learning disability We want people with a learning disability to be safe and well when they use our health services. We now check 3 things to make sure people with a learning disability get good healthcare. 6

7 1. Making sure staff know how to work with people with a learning disability in the right way Some people with a learning disability can get upset if they don t understand what is going on. They may show this by hurting the doctors or nurses looking after them. We gave staff training so they know more about how to work with people with a learning disability. 2. Taking the wrong medicines or tablets We want to stop people taking the wrong medicine. Staff now share what they know about making sure people get the right medicine and tablets. This will help more staff know how to keep people safe. 7

8 3. People hurting themselves Some people with a learning disability can hurt themselves when they get angry or worried. We are doing more to help make sure people don t hurt themselves. Health visitors By 2015 we want to have over 100 new health visitors. Health visitors visit families at home. They help make sure babies and young children are healthy. We want to make sure that babies and children get all the care they need. 8

9 We want each child to have a plan that health visitors and other people can use to keep children safe. We want to make sure staff work together to keep all children safe. Birmingham Dental Hospital We want to make sure that people who come to the Dental Hospital really need to be there. We will check why people are sent to the hospital. We will make sure there is good information on the Dental Hospital website about what the hospital is for how to look after your teeth. 9

10 This will help us make sure that people only come to the hospital if they really need to. We asked people what they thought of the Dental Hospital. People said these things They need more information about what will happen at the hospital. They have to wait too long. Staff need to get better at telling them what they are doing during treatment. 10

11 We worked to make these things better. We asked people again. They said these things have got much better. We will also check that people get good care when they go to their local dentist. It is also important that staff at the Dental Hospital keep their hands really clean. This helps stop people getting ill. We have a nurse that helps staff keep their hands really clean. We check if staff are keeping their hands clean. This has helped to stop problems happening. 11

12 Other things we are doing We have made sure health staff have training in how to help people stop smoking how to talk to people who may have a problem with drinking too much alcohol. It is important that people are safe. Some people find it hard to speak up about things that happen to them. We have trained our staff to look out for people who find it hard to say what is happening to them. We now have a group that checks to make sure people are kept safe. 12

13 Other things we are doing Some health staff go to people s homes to help look after them. These are people who find it hard to move around and do things by themselves. These people often have to wait for 2 hours more than they should for staff to get there. We will do what we can to make sure they don t wait more than an hour longer than they should. 13

14 Finding out what people think about their healthcare We asked people to fill in 2 surveys. The second survey people filled in showed us that our healthcare was getting better. We will use what people tell us to make our healthcare as good as it can be. Finding out what people with a learning disability think People with a learning disability and their carers. spent a day at Birmingham City Football Club. They told us what they think of their healthcare. We will have another event to ask people if things have got better. 14

15 A story about someone who got good care for his teeth One man told us that we really helped him get good care for his teeth. He said that he was very scared of going to the dentist. He could not go to the dentist because he was so scared. But then he got some help. There is a special team of people who help people who are very scared of the dentist. He went to see them. They helped him feel much better about getting care for his teeth. After that he was OK about getting care for his teeth. 15
