1 -Texas A&M University Corpus Christi- Department of Recreational Sports INTRAMURAL SPORTS BASKETBALL RULES Intramural Basketball plays under the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules with the following modifications TEAM CAPTAINS: Team captains are responsible for informing their teammates of all Intramural Sports policies and procedures. Only the team captain may address an official on matters of rule interpretations, or to obtain essential information. Team captains are responsible for their team and fans behavior before, during, and after the game. Team captains are responsible for any equipment given to them, such as team jerseys and team balls. (Team captains, you will be charged for the missing items) PLAYERS & ELIGIBILITY: 5 players on the court. Minimum number to start the game is 3. There may be unlimited substitutions. Subs may enter the game only on a dead ball, timeout or before the final free throw taken only when an official calls them on the court. Subs may not enter the game until they check in with scorer s table and an official calls them on the court. Illegal Substitutions may result in a technical foul. Team rosters are frozen after the first game of the playoffs. NO ID NO PLAY! All participants must present their Sandollar ID to the Intramural Supervisor on duty, in order to be eligible to play. EQUIPMENT: The Intramural Office will furnish game balls. However, both teams may agree to use another ball as long as it is regulation. No Jewelry, hats, caps or bandanas. Participants may not cover up jewelry with tape, Band-Aids or other such items. No casts or splints (hard or soft) are permitted. Knee braces are permitted. Teams may wear their own jerseys. All jerseys must be of the same color and have numbers. Jerseys will be provided for each team if necessary. A shirt must be worn underneath the Intramural Sports jerseys (tank tops are allowed to be worn underneath the Intramural Sports jerseys). Intramural Sports have jerseys available to checkout. THE GAME: A game will consist of two 20 minute halves with a 3 minute half-time. There will be a running clock, except for the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half. During the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half the clock will stop on all dead ball situations. The clock will NOT stop during a made basket at any point. SPEED UP RULE: During the last 2 minutes of the second half any team is ahead by 15 or more points the clock will only stop on team and official s time-outs. A team must have a minimum number of players to start a game. The minimum number of players is three (3).

2 Dunking is permitted during the game but is not allowed prior to the game, during half time, or following all games. GRASPING AND HANGING ON THE RIM OR NET is illegal and will result in a technical foul, except if in the opinion of the officials; it was done to prevent injury. Any player who damages equipment will be financially responsible for the repair of replacement of the damaged items(s). Time-outs: Each team shall be permitted three (3) one minute time-outs per game and one (1) timeout per overtime. Only 2 unused timeouts will carry over into the second half. Timeouts will not be carried over from regulation to overtime. Time-outs will also not be carried over from separate overtime periods if more than one overtime period is needed. To start the game, a jump ball will be administered at center court. The alternating possession arrow will determine possession of the ball at the start of the second half. Substitutions: A substitute must report to the scorekeeper and be recognized by a game official before he/she may enter the game. In a multiple free throw situation, a substitute may only enter immediately before the last free throw attempt or after the last free throw attempt is made. If the substitute is for the shooter it must be a made basket to substitute. Failure to properly report will result in a technical foul being assessed to that player. Mercy Rule: If a team is ahead by 40 or more points in the second half, the game is ended. Running Clock: If a team is up by more than 15 points with 2 minutes remaining we will continue the remainder of the game with a running clock. Overtime: If the game is tied at the end of regulation, a 2 minute period overtime will occur. The clock will stop on all dead ball situations during the overtime period. The overtime period will begin with a jump ball at center court. CO-REC MODIFICATIONS: Each team will consist of five (5) players- Maximum of 2 men and 3 women. Substitutions are allowed on a man-for-man and woman-for-woman basis only. A team may start with a minimum of three (3) players. A team must have each gender represented on the court at all times. The women s size ball will be used during the game, unless both teams agree to use a different ball. Men cannot block the shot of a female shooter. Attempting to block a shot involves a swinging motion toward the female shooter. A male who is standing flat-footed with his arms straight in the air is NOT considered to be attempting a block. If the block attempt is successful, the ball will be called dead and the shooting team awarded the appropriate amount of points for the female shot (3 or 4). If a male attempts to block the shot of a female player and fails in his attempt, play will continue. Females will awarded 3 points for all regular 2 pointers (3 free throws for fouls inside the 3 point line) Females will be awarded 4 points for all regular 3 pointers (4 free throws for fouls outside the 3 point line) All bonus situations will remain the same as regular basketball no matter the gender. BALL IN AND OUT OF PLAY: The ball is OUT OF PLAY when: o A player steps on or the ball bounces on any part of the court boundary or contacts anything outside the boundary of the court. o The ball contacts any support structure or backside of the backboard. The ball will be put back into play with a throw-in at the designated spot.

3 VIOLATIONS: On a free throw a player shall: o Attempt a free throw from within the free throw circle and behind the line. o Player has 10 seconds to shoot the free throw. o No faking a free throw attempt. o Players may not enter the lane until the ball has hit the rim. Violations on free throw: o By the free thrower or a teammate results in turnover, no point. o By opponent, if try is good, point good; if no good, re-try. o By each team simultaneously, the ball is dead; possession will be determined by the alternating possession. Violations on throw in: May not leave designated spot, only after a made basket. 5 seconds to throw the ball in. Thrower may not touch the ball until it has touched another player. Ball may not enter the basket before touched by another player. Must be behind the out of bounds line. Player may not kick or strike the ball into the goal. Player may not double dribble, unless an opponent has touched it. Violation during jump ball is a re-jump. Team has 10 seconds to advance the ball to the frontcourt. No players shall be in the key for more than 3 seconds. Players may not swing elbows, even if no contact occurs. No players shall hand check. No players shall commit goal tending or basket interference: o Violation will result in counting the basket. o Violation by both teams results in alternating possession. FOULS AND PENALTIES: A player will be disqualified (fouls out) when he/she has accumulated 5 fouls (any combination of personal and technical fouls). Bonus free throws (one-and-one) for each common foul (except player control) will be awarded beginning with the offending team s 7th personal foul during each half. Two free throws will be awarded for every foul on or after the 10th team foul during each half. Offensive and defensive players may not enter the lane until the free throw attempt has contacted either the rim or the backboard. No free throws will be awarded for the following: o Each common foul before the bonus rule is in effect. o Double foul. o A player control foul or team control foul. o A double technical foul.

4 Technical Fouls: On all technical fouls, two (2) free throws will be awarded to the offended team, plus the ball at the division line for a throw-in. o Technical fouls are counted towards each player s disqualification total and the team s total fouls. Two unsportsmanlike technical fouls charged to any individual will result in his/her ejection from the game and the facility. Three unsportsmanlike technical fouls will result in the team s forfeiting the game. Any technical assessed to the bench will be charged to the team captain. Intentional Fouls: On all intentional fouls, the offended team will be awarded two (2) points and possession of the ball. Flagrant Fouls: On all flagrant fouls, the offended team will be awarded two (2) points and possession of the ball. The offending player will be ejected from the game. PENALTIES AND SANCTIONS: Verbal Warnings - will be issued for minor offenses, such as language. A technical foul will be issued for rude behavior, or offensive conduct at the discretion of the official. Two technical fouls on one player will result in that player s ejection. Three technical fouls on any given team will result in forfeiture game (i.e. - the game will be over). Teams will be charged a time out for delays caused by illegal substitutions, wearing jewelry or not returning to play when official indicates ready for play. Sportsmanship Ratings: In order to promote good sportsmanship the Intramural Program has adopted a sportsmanship policy. It is the responsibility of the team and players to make sure the game atmosphere is friendly and fun to both staff and fellow participants. The sportsmanship rating will be determined by game officials and will include behavior before, during and after each contest. Each team will receive a letter grade after each game. An unsportsmanlike/technical will be issued during contests to warn and/or eject individuals, teams or spectators. Ejections occur when an individual receives 2 minor unsportsmanlike/technical fouls or 1 major unsportsmanlike/technical fouls will result in the ejection of that individual. Please see Mandatory Disciplinary Meetings for ejected individuals. Minor Unsportsmanlike/Technical fouls could include, but are not limited to: - Verbal and non-verbal dissent towards officials - Taunting opponents or staff - Actions detrimental to the spirit of the game - Unnecessary contact with opponent Major Unsportsmanlike/Technical fouls could include, but are not limited to: - Excessive verbal and non-verbal dissent towards officials - Threats towards staff or opponents - Fighting - Second minor offense on same player

5 Sportsmanship ratings will be based on the following criteria: 5 = Excellent conduct and sportsmanship. Players cooperate with officials and team members. The captain calmly converses with officials and has full control of his/her team. (4 points) 4 = Acceptable conduct and sportsmanship. Team members show minor dissent that may or may not merit a warning. Teams that earn 1 minor unsportsmanlike/technical foul will receive no higher than a B rating. Team captain exhibits some control over his/her team. (3 points) 3 = Below average conduct and sportsmanship. Team shows verbal dissent towards officials or opposing team that may or may not merit a warning. Team captain exhibits minor control over his/her team. Teams that earn 2 minor unsportsmanlike/technical s from separate participants or 1 major unsportsmanlike/technical foul resulting in ejection will receive no higher than a C rating. (2 points) 2 = Poor conduct and sportsmanship. Team constantly shows dissent. Multiple instances of poor sportsmanship that could include minor and major infractions toward officials and/or opposing team; actions from those inflame or provoke. Team captain has little control over his/her team. (1 point) 1 = Unacceptable conduct and sportsmanship. Team completely uncooperative. Team captain has no control over team. Any team earning 3 minor unsportsmanlike/technical s on separate participants, any team earning 1 major unsportsmanlike/technical foul resulting in ejection combines with 1 minor unsportsmanlike/technical on a separate participant will receive an F rating. Teams or team members using false identification will receive an F Rating. Any team with players, or spectators, in possession or under the influence of alcohol will receive an F rating. (0 points) Any team receiving an F rating will be suspended from further play until meeting with and being reinstated by the Intramural Coordinator. Playoff Eligibility In order for a team to be eligible for post-season play they must earn an average of a 3 in the regular season. Once in the playoffs teams must receive at least a 3 rating for each game played in order to advance. Teams that wins by a not ready to play Forfeit will receive an 5 rating. Teams losing by a not ready to play Forfeit will receive a 1 rating. Teams losing by Default will receive a 3 rating. Protest and Protest Procedures: -Protests within Intramural Sports are allowed to correct the misinterpretation of the rules, the misinterpretation and application of penalties, and/or player eligibility, THE JUDGMENT OF AN OFFICIAL IS NOT PROTESTABLE.
