1 Year 9 Study Guide Booklet The more you use your brain the better it gets. Student Name...
2 For Parents and Caregivers The exams for all Year 9 students will be the 5th and 6th November. For many students this prospect is very daunting as many students feel they don t know how to study. Subject teachers will be working through study preparation with your child, this will include: Ensuring students know what material was covered this year. Appropriate study methods for their subject. The format of the exam What can I do to help? Be encouraging and positive in what you say. Help your child set aside time and an appropriate place to study. Discuss the contents of this booklet with your child and ask them questions about their study efforts. Hopefully if we all make an effort we can decrease the stress for your Year 9 student and increase their chances of success in the exams. 2
3 Information for Students Examinations are the 5th and 6th November of Term 4. This booklet is to help you study. You will have exams for ESS, Mathematics and Science. Remember exams are designed to test what you know, not to catch you out. It is up to you whether you walk out of your last exam wishing you did more or feeling satisfied that you did the best job you could. Exam Dates: 5th and 6th November My Examination Timetable Thursday 10-10am to 12-10pm Normal P2/3 classes 1-15pm to 3-15pm ESS Friday 9-05am to 11-05am Mathematics 1-15pm to 3-15pm Science 3
4 Step by Step How to Study Step 1 Make sure your notes are complete and organised Borrow someone's book and compare notes Copy or photocopy any info you are missing Put material into the right order by topic or date Step 2 Make a study plan Draw up the days and weeks you have left until your exams Aim to study 30min to 60min four to six times a week Be realistic. Include some time out, work, chores, sports etc Step 3 Organise a space to study Make sure it is comfortable Make sure it has good light Make sure there is fresh air. Step 4 Find out what will be tested in the exam Your teacher will give you what you need to study Write this down in the back of this book Look over past exam papers if you can Use this info to work out what you are going to study when on your study plan Step 5 Start studying Don t put it off. Don t be afraid to ask for help. 4
5 A Message from your Dean These exams are important and you should be preparing yourself as well as you can for them. You should use this booklet and follow the steps on page 4 and start studying. Ask your teachers for advice on how to study for their subject. How you perform in these exams will determine your classes for next year. Good luck and make us proud. IDEA SHORT TERM LONG TERM MEMORY To get something into your long term memory you need to actively do something with your class notes so that you will remember them in the exam! 6 Strategies for Study Each individual learns best in a different way. You need to find out which way works best for you. Some people may need complete quiet and others prefer listening to music. Create Multi-sensory memories Read and visualise SIGHT Answer questions HEARING Write out answer and highlight major points PHYSICAL Study Buddy Learn with a friend, discuss, explore and demonstrate Teach someone else This is great to help you think carefully and organise your thoughts Make mind maps, flow charts, diagrams or a time line Organise material meaningfully Flash Cards Vocabulary or term on one side Definition or meaning on the other side Pictionary Use your flash cards to play Pictionary Mnemonics Make a word from all the first letters of what you are trying to remember NASA National Aeronautical Space Agency Making up your own means you will remember it much better! 6

8 Advice from Year 12 students Stay calm and don t stress Practise old exams, that always helps Find the different way you learn, if you are visual or spatial for example. You can do mind maps or make a song or teach someone else Start with your hardest subject If you are finding it difficult, a good place to start studying is to just read over your notes Set goals that are really specific (like including dates) and reward yourself when you achieve them Just do it Don t think that they don t matter, these exams do matter Turn off your phone, lock your door and eat well Make sure you have got all your notes because the class you missed might impact on your results in the exam Have a distraction free study zone 8
9 What is stress? Stress is the way your body and mind react to everything around you or everything that happens to you. Stress is normal and everyone feels it at some time. Physical reactions Tense jaw Tense muscles Headaches Tight chest Thoughts and feelings Impatient Confused Can t concentrate Forgetting things often Handling Stress Get plenty of sleep. Eat balanced healthy meals. Don t automatically imagine the worst. Try and think positively. Talk about it. Next time someone you trust and you know who will listen asks you how you are, answer honestly. Describe how you feel. Watch a funny movie with a friend. Do something about what is causing you stress. Make a list of possible solutions and deal with the issues one at a time. 9
10 Before the Exam Get a good night s rest the night before. Make sure you know when and where your exam is. Make sure you have the right equipment. You will not be allowed to eat during the examination. If you have a special medical condition see the supervisor before the examination. If you are too ill to attend, you must notify the office before the examination starts. During the Exam All bags must be left either outside or at the front of the room your teacher will direct you. Cell phones in bags. Make sure you allocate your time carefully and that you follow all instructions. Read through the exam and plan to answer the easier questions first. Attempt all questions. Check your work carefully, especially if you finish early. Before leaving, check you have your name on each sheet and that you have handed everything in. 10
