The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Administration-Health Services is a degree program offered jointly and cooperatively by the Graduate School of Management in the School of Business and the Department of Health Services Administration in the School of Health Related Professions. The program is for those who wish to pursue the conceptual, philosophical, and applied aspects of administrative processes in the health services. It provides doctoral-level study and research in administration with specific application to health services. Graduates find employment opportunities both in academic institutions and in health care or government organizations. Accreditation: There is no accrediting body for Ph.D. programs. However, both the master's programs in health administration and business are accredited by appropriate national accreditation agencies. Credentials Conferred: Diploma - The Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Length of Study: Two years of coursework plus one or more years for a doctoral dissertation. Application Deadline: Applications received by February 15 will receive priority consideration. Applications may be submitted up to April 15 and will be considered on a space-available basis. Application Procedure: The following materials must be submitted to the Ph.D. Program: completed UAB Graduate School application materials (all forms available from the Ph.D. Program in Administration-Health Services, UAB School of Health Related Professions, 1675 University Boulevard, Birmingham, Alabama ), non-refundable application fee of $35.00 ($60 for international applicants), official transcripts from all colleges attended,
2 Page 2 of 5 test scores on GMAT or GRE taken within past five years, if applicant's native language is not English, scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) with the Test of Written English (TWE), and three reference letters. Requirements for Admission: An applicant should have a master's degree in a relevant discipline such as health administration, public health, science, medicine, business administration, nursing, public administration, etc., or have completed an undergraduate program with an outstanding record. All applicants will be reviewed by the Admissions and Policy Committee of graduate faculty from the School of Health Related Professions and the School of Business. Applicants will be accepted to begin doctoral study only in the fall term of each academic year. Admission to the Ph.D. program will be determined by a consensus of the committee after examining the applicant's qualifications, including an aboveaverage score on the GRE or GMAT, previous academic records, prior research efforts, desire to pursue doctoral work, and potential contribution to the health services field. Only students who will devote substantial amounts of time to the program of study will be admitted. The admissibility of applicants who expect to have significant outside commitments will be determined on an individual basis. Students accepted by the program must complete the UAB medical history questionnaire and physical, provide proof of required immunizations, and receive satisfactory screening by the UAB Medical Center Student Health Service. Essential Requirements: Fundamental tasks, behaviors, and abilities necessary to successfully complete the academic and clinical/residency requirements of the program and to satisfy licensure/certification requirements, if any, have been outlined and are available upon request from the academic program office. Students requesting disability accommodations must do so by filing a disability accommodation request in writing with the academic program office. Program of Study: The program of study is divided into six major components. Course requirements are listed in semester credit hours. Prerequisite Component: One graduate statistics course and one health care systems course. In addition, two other prerequisite health services courses may be required for those with no prior background or experience in health services (6-12 hours). Research Tools and Methodology Component: Areas of study will include philosophy of science, research methods, regression, multivariate statistics, and one additional research/statistics course (15 hours). Program Requirements Component: Areas of study will include the following: health economics, health insurance and managed care, growth and development of the U.S. health care system, health care finance, health policy, administrative theory, and doctoral seminars (24 hours). Specialization Component: Students will select a specialization in
3 Page 3 of 5 strategic management or health services research and take seven additional courses (21 hours). Comprehensive Examinations: Students must successfully complete a comprehensive examination in each of the areas of health services, research/quantitative methods, and the specialization area during or after the completion of coursework. Dissertation Component: The final stage of the program is the preparation, submission, and defense of a doctoral dissertation representing a significant scholarly contribution to strategic management or health services research. Coursework includes dissertation research (9 hours). The minimum period in which the doctor's degree can be earned is three full-time academic years beyond the baccalaureate degree. The doctoral dissertation must have been performed directly under the guidance and supervision of a member of the UAB graduate faculty. A limited number of research assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis and carry an obligation of 20 work hours per week. Research assistants are assigned to work with faculty members in the School of Business and/or the Department of Health Services Administration to support the

Assistantships are awarded to incoming students for a period of one year and may be renewed for an additional year based on satisfactory work performance and academic progress in the program. Research assistantships are available only to full-time students and restrict the student from holding other paid positions on or off campus. Some students are able to secure funding for additional years in the program through research assistant positions or other part-time jobs funded by faculty members grants and contracts activities. These positions are filled on a competitive basis, and students are encouraged to establish informal working relationships with faculty early in the program to prepare themselves to compete for these positions. Other forms of financial assistance include doctoral fellowships for minority students offered through the UAB Graduate School, paid teaching opportunities in selected undergraduate programs, and federal student loans.
