1 IKF GRADUATION AND DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS To graduate from Deer Creek High School and receive a diploma, students must complete one of the following curriculums: I. Core Curriculum A. Requires twenty-four (24) units as follows: 1. Four (4) English 2. Three (3) Mathematics (Algebra I or any course with content or rigor above Algebra I, or Computer Science, Contextual Math which enhances technology preparation, or math courses taught at a technology center during the 11 th or 12 th grade year and approved by the State Board of Education and Deer Creek Board of Education) 3. Three (3) Sciences (Biology I or Biology I contextual methodology, and 2 units or sets of competencies in the area of life, physical, earth science, or principles of technology, or science courses taught at a tech center taken in the 11 th or 12 th grade upon approval of the State Board of Education and the Deer Creek Board of Education) History, American History, and U.S. Government) 7. Two (2) Fine Arts 8. Two (2) Technology or Arts 9. Six (6) Electives The Core Curriculum does not necessarily qualify a student for all college admissions. Careful examination of individual college requirements must be made. B. Beginning with the freshman class of , in order to receive this diploma, a parent must sign a form, available at the school, opting their student out of college preparatory curriculum. This curriculum does not meet Oklahoma s Promise-OHLAP.
2 II. Oklahoma College Preparatory Curriculum A. Requires twenty-four (24) units as follows: 1. Four (4) English* 2. Three (3) Mathematics (Algebra I or any course with content or rigor above Algebra I and approved for college admissions)* 3. Three (3) Laboratory Sciences (Biology I required and any lab science with content and/or rigor equal to or above Biology and approved for college admissions)* History, American History, and U.S. Government required)* 7. One (1) Fine Arts 8. Two (2) units of the same Foreign Language or two (2) Technology classes (Keyboarding does not satisfy this requirement) 9. One (1) Elective from English, Math, Science, History, Foreign Language, or Computer Technology Approved for College Admissions 10. Six (6) Electives of Choice III. Certificate of Distinction Curriculum A. Requires twenty-six (26) units as follows: 1. Four (4) English* 2. Four (4) Mathematics (Algebra I or any course with content or rigor above Algebra I and approved for college admissions)* 3. Four (4) Laboratory Sciences (Biology I and a physical science required and any lab science with content and/or rigor equal to or above Biology and approved for college admissions)* History, American History and U.S. Government required)* 7. One (1) Fine Arts 8. Two (2) units of the same Foreign Language 9. One (1) Elective from English, Math, Science, History, Foreign Language, or Computer Technology Approved for College Admissions 10. Six (6) Electives of Choice *Taken in grades 9 th 12 th Beginning with the freshman class of 2009/2010. B Grade Point Average on a weighted scale.
3 IV. Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude Curriculum A. Meets the Certificate of Distinction requirements B. 4.0 Grade Point Average on a weighted scale. SELECTION OF A VALEDICTORIAN/SALUTATORIAN A. All students with a Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude and a seven (7) semester cumulative GPA equal to or higher than a 4.2 will be awarded the honor of valedictorian. Where two or more valedictorians are named, no salutatorian will be awarded. In the absence of a student with a 4.2 GPA or higher, the valedictorian shall be the student with the Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude and the highest GPA. All students declared valedictorian shall have the rank of #1 in the class. In the event only one valedictorian is awarded, the student with the Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude and the second highest GPA shall be named salutatorian. B. In the event that a student named valedictorian or salutatorian fails to meet the requirements for the Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude at the time of graduation, the award of valedictorian will be revoked. Beginning with the freshman class of 2009/2010. C. The Valedictorian will be a graduating senior with a Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude diploma with the highest seven semesters cumulative weighted GPA. The Salutatorian will be a graduating senior with a Certificate of Distinction Cum Laude diploma and the second highest cumulative weighted GPA. Where there is a tie for Valedictorian, a Salutatorian will be still named. Grade point averages will be based on the seven semester transcript (9 th, 10 th, 11 th, and the first semester of the 12 th grade). Credit received for coursework prior to 9 th grade will be calculated into the cumulative GPA and used to determine Valedictorian. Both the Valedictorian and Salutatorian must have been continuously enrolled at Deer Creek High School beginning with the first semester of junior year. Beginning with the freshman class of 2012/2013
4 CLASS RANK Class rank shall be determined at the end of each semester regardless of the curricular program. The person with the highest GPA at the end of each semester shall be ranked number one. In case of a tie at the.01 level, the rank shall be shared. A class rank exception shall be that any student who at the beginning of his or her senior year has obtained a GPA higher than the scale above for the selection of valedictorian shall be able to list him or herself as number one in the class on all college application papers. When the valedictorian selection process is completed at the end of the first semester and the student s GPA has dropped below the scale, ranking shall be readjusted to reflect the current and correct ranking.
