12 The Letter Resh The letter Resh ר makes the R sound, like in the Hebrew words Radyo ר דיוֹ Nayad Radyo-Tayp ר דיוֹ-ט ייפּ נ יי ד (Boom box) ר ב Rav (rabbi) Ratz ר ץ (ran) as well as Rokenrol רוֹק נ'רוֹל (Rock music). 12
13 The Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana ר אשׁ ה שׁ נ ה also begins with Resh. Finally, we have several short words that begin ר ע (soft), Ra ר ך (argued), Rach ר ב with Resh: Rav (bad), and Rak ר ק (only). How to write a Resh? A Resh looks like this: This is how you write it: 13

24 The Letter Sin The Hebrew letter Sin שׂ makes an S sound like in the movie Sar Hataba ot שׂ ר ה ט בּ עוֹת (Lord of the Rings) and the Hebrew word Sam שׂ ם (put). What s with 2 Letters that Make the S Sound? Remember you learned the letter Samech ס a few lessons back? It, too, makes the S sound. Why? It s like English, where both C and S can make an S sound. How Do I Tell שׂ and שׁ Apart? Sin and Shin indeed look like the same letter (and you won t find a separate listing for Sin in a Hebrew dictionary ). If you see a dot on the upper left of the letter, it s Sin שׂ and if you see the dot on.שׁ the upper right, it s a Shin 24
