What have we got 8 Product Standards (EN 13108) 2 Production Standards (EN 13108) 44 Test Standards (EN 12697) PD UK Guidance document for use of EN PD UK Guidance document for use of EN BS Installation

EN Standards - Products EN Asphaltic Concrete EN Asphaltic Concrete for very thin Layers EN Soft Asphalt (Nordic Countries) EN Hot Rolled Asphalt EN Stone Mastic Asphalt EN Mastic Asphalt EN Porous Asphalt

EN Standards - Constituents EN Reclaimed Asphalt

EN Standards - Conformity EN Type Testing EN Factory Production Control

Product Testing Standards EN Standards covering the testing of asphalt mixtures Examples : BS EN Bulk Density BS EN Stiffness BS EN Marshall test

Important Differences ENs relate to the product.. in the back of the lorry Target & Tolerance concept Some description changes

Important Differences (cont.) Mixture are evaluated for product conformity against the selected properties within the EN Spec. Product conformity (attestation of conformity) is evidenced by CE marking

Important Differences (cont.) The specification tolerances for grading and binder content are NOT included in the individual product standard- They sit within EN (PD 6691) Binder and filler content are NOT adjusted to compensate for sampling bias

Type Testing (New Terminology) EN Applies two approaches: Empirical Approach Specifies Material Based on: Composition alone or Composition & Performance related tests (performance related testes which indirectly measure performance (i.e. Void content etc.)

Type Testing Cont. Fundamental Approach Specifies Material Based on: Performance Based tests, with limited requirements for composition (performance based testes which directly measure performance (i.e. Stiffness, deformation resistance & fatigue etc.)

CE Marking Approval process Select target grading and binder content from the tables in the Annex in PD 6691 Carry out Type Testing according to EN to prove target mix conformity Apply Factory Production Control (FPC) tolerances to the target composition to formulate the compliances specification. Follow the FPC requirement to manufacture the product Certify the system (by approved certifying body) to be able to CE mark the product

Example for determination of target grading and it s limits Determine the average grading for the mixture over last 6 to 12 months and this should be within grading envelop given in PD 6691.

PD6692: 2010 Guidance on the use of BS EN Bituminous Mixtures Test Methods fr hot mix asphalt

BS : 2010 This is the baseline document for all asphalt works. Applies principally to Parts 1, 4 and 5 of BS EN relating to Asphalt Concrete, Hot Rolled Asphalt (including application of coated chippings to provide texture for skid resistance) and Stone Mastic Asphalt, Applies from the point of collection from the production plant until the materials are in-situ and ready to receive a further superimposed layer or traffic.

Attestation of Conformity Initial Type Testing Factory Production Control Evaluation of Conformity CE-marking

Attestation of Conformity To obtain CE mark there is a Procedure of Attestation of Conformity For asphalt 1. Initial type testing by the manufacturer. 2. Factory production control - by the manufacturer. 3. Initial inspection plus a continuous surveillance of the FPC by a notified body (a neutral third party).

CE-marking In CPD the use of CE marking is described A product for construction works and placed on the European internal market must have a CE marking. CE marking on a product indicates that the product satisfies all the provisions of the CPD, including the conformity assessment procedures. Asphalt mix produced according to the harmonised European standards, must carry the so called CE marking

AGGREGATE SIZE (d/d) lower sized sieve ( d ) higher size sieve ( D ) old 20mm single size stone will now be classed as 10/20

AGGREGATE SIZE (d/d) BS 63 New EN 40mm 20/40 28mm 20/32 20mm 10/20 14mm 6.3/14 10mm 4/10 6mm 2/6.3 3mm 1/4 CRF 0/4 all-in Fine Sand 0/2FP

GRADING CATEGORY (G c ) Percentage of material passing d/d 10/20 would have a grading category G c 85/20 Not less than 85% passing D Not more than 20% passing d

Aggregate Test - Flakiness (FI 35 ) Flakiness test has changed you now use a bar sieve along with the new sieve sizes. Results are lower then the old method

Aggregate Test Los Angeles (LA 30 ) Is new to the UK, it measures the fragmentation / strength Replace the old 10% Fines value The lower the number the harder the stone LA of 30 or less will be within specification.

MICRO-DEVAL (M DE ) New to the UK and is similar to the Los Angeles test but measures the resistance of an aggregate to wear.

Polished Stone Value (PSV) This has stayed the same as before.
