1 English Learner Master Plan Multilingual & Multicultural Education Department Chapter 2: Instructional Options 1
2 Guiding Principles English learners are held to the same high expectations of learning established for all students. English learners receive instruction that builds on their previous education and cognitive abilities and that reflects their language proficiency levels. The academic success of English learners is a responsibility shared by all educators, the family and the community.
3 Learner Objectives Understand the program options that are available to English learners in LAUSD. Review systems for the initial notification requirements for parents of ELs. 3

6 Goals of Instructional Options Meet the diverse needs of ELs Meet the educational preferences of their parents Prepare ELs to participate fully in A-G courses Prepare ELs to graduate from high school ready for college and careers Ensure that ELs with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in a program consistent with their IEP 6

9 Commonalities Among Instructional Options Guarantee access to a comprehensive curriculum with scaffolds and support for the various English language proficiency levels Ensure ELs with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate consistent with their IEP Allow for equal access to gifted and talented opportunities 9
10 Jigsaw Activity Form groups of 5 and number off (1-5). This group is your home group. Move to number-alike groups (all 1s together, all 2s together, etc.). This is your expert group. Each expert group will read about one program option, identify key information and complete program option template. On my signal, you will return to your home group to share your expertise. 10
