2 Department of Welcome Statement Thank you for your interest in Park University. The Department of Athletic Training prepares students for a broad range of health care specialties. Depending on the chosen program, students can specialize in athletic training or take courses that educate you for other areas of health care such as exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, nutrition, health and wellness. Park University students can choose from these two academic program options: Bachelor of Science in Bachelor of Science in Fitness and Wellness Mission Statement The Department of is committed to providing the best education possible that will prepare graduates who embody the quality of health care and promote physical, emotional and spiritual wellness by leading a healthy lifestyle. Department of On behalf of Park University, I would like to personally thank you for your interest in our academic programs. As a student in Park University s program you will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of educational opportunities ranging from high school, collegiate, clinical, to professional environments. These experiences will enhance your overall academic knowledge and offer you an opportunity to practice the profession first hand. Students of the Education program can also participate in the Athletic Training Student Association. This student centered association provides you the chance to be involved in various educational and professional social activities that will enrich your overall college experience. If you are interested in fitness and wellness, Park offers a major that introduces you to the basic principles of exercise and nutrition. Students who enroll in the major learn how exercising regularly and eating healthy lead to a healthier lifestyle. Students will gain knowledge on how to build a personal strength training and conditioning program. I invite you to schedule a campus visit to observe one of our certified athletic trainers or the community wellness coordinator to further your understanding of either academic program. 3 zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Bachelor of Science The major is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. The major provides students with a variety of courses and practical experiences related to the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Students must submit a formal application to be admitted to this program. The Certified Athletic Trainer is a highly educated and skilled health care professional. In cooperation with physicians and other health care personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the health care team in a wide array of work settings, including: secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports, hospitals and the military. Park University s program educates and prepares students toward specific skills in the following areas: Risk management and injury prevention Pathological mechanism of various injuries and illnesses Clinical evaluation skills and diagnosis of a patient for the purpose of identifying risk factors and injuries to determine proper care General medical conditions and disabilities associated with physically active individuals Immediate care procedures for various injuries and illnesses Prepare, execute, document and evaluate the importance of therapeutic modalities in the treatment of injuries and illnesses Patients exhibiting psychological problems/issues Pharmacological applications relevant to the treatment of injuries, illnesses and diseases Nutritional aspects of injury and illness Develop and administer policies and procedures, and manage facilities that provide health care to the physically active Responsibilities of professional development that promote the athletic training profession 3 4

The faculty and staff are dedicated to assisting and motivating students to reach their optimal fitness and wellness potential. We consider our optimal goal is to enhance the quality of life by equipping students with the knowledge that promotes long-term fitness and wellness.
