3 HIV 1/2 Testing With no clear symptoms, testing for HIV is the only way to determine one s status. HIV testing within drug services is an effective way of screening patients, especially amongst those at high risk of infection through intravenous drug usage. The HIV rapid test detects the presence of antibodies to HIV, and indicates either a reactive or non reactive result through the development of test lines. The test delivers results fast, enabling preliminary diagnosis within one appointment. Those at risk are quickly informed and appropriate follow up measures can be introduced. 4 Hepatitis B Testing Rates of Hepatitis B infection are significantly higher amongst drug users, compared with the general population. An undiagnosed Hepatitis B infection can lead to chronic hepatitis and damage to the liver. Like HIV, Hepatitis B has few symptoms, and diagnosis is not possible without the use of a blood test. Rapid onsite blood tests can detect the presence of antigens or antibodies to Hepatitis B, aiding in the fast diagnosis of infection. 5 Hepatitis C Testing During the first six months of a Hepatitis C infection, symptoms only occur in around one in four people. For this reason, rapid diagnosis is critical, in order to initiate therapy and prevent further transmission. The prevalence of Hepatitis C co-infection amongst drug users with HIV is high and thus a combined programme of onsite testing is advantageous. Co-infection also increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, bringing further complications to the lives of those affected.
