1 CHC 2P1 Grade 10 Applied History Culminating Project (15% of Final Mark) Propaga Poster & Presentation PROPAGANDA The word used to describe the process of persuading people to believe in a certain idea or set of ideas. During WWI WWII, Propaga was used by both sides to convince their people of the righteousness of their cause. In Canada, propaga was used to persuade young men women to join the Armed Forces to influence how people at home felt about the war Germany also a variety of other reasons. Often times, Propaga always represented a certain bias would use tricks such as peer pressure important sounding speech to influence its audience. Your Task Part 1 The Poster Propaga posters were actively used throughout the war to help rally support for the troops fighting overseas. Create your own poster that includes a slogan as though it were from one of the following time periods. Your poster should reflect one of the following 6 areas of study: 1) Pre-War/World War I 2) Roaring 20s/Dirty 30s 3) WWII 4) The Cold War 5) French/English Relations 6) Modern Canada (1970s to Present) Your poster should have a definite purpose should show one side of an issue. The poster should be created using Adobe Photoshop. The poster should have a height = 8 inches width 11 inches, 72 dpi. Upon completion of the poster, save it as.jpg or.jpeg. If you do not have access to Adobe Photoshop, you can still produce your project on any other computer program or even h draw it. The same dimensions apply. Your poster must be an original designed with the intent that it is completely unique. YOU ARE NOT TO MERELY DOWNLOAD AN EXISTING PHOTO AND TRY TO PASS IT OFF AS YOUR OWN. Your poster must be fully coloured. Check the CWS website to see samples of past Propaga Posters used. Your poster must successfully employ propaga techniques should incorporate some elements of style artwork. You are free to use existing graphics/illustrations/pictures; however your arrangement of those pictures in an aesthetically pleasing format will determine your effort your final mark. Your poster must have a slogan or catchy phrase designed to persuade or convince your reader of something. Your poster should have a definite message should include pictures/images that help support that message. Keep in mind that the images you choose the style must reflect that time period you ve chosen!

2 Specs: - use only the 8.5 x 11 Sheet for your final product - poster is completed using ADOBE photoshop or other program or h drawn. - Poster must have a slogan - Poster must be coloured - Poster must contain pictures/images that support overall message - Pictures/images chosen must be to the time period - Poster can be created on computer BUT CANNOT be copied or download from an existing poster (Check internet for samples) Samples: To see more, check the website or perform a google search on Propaga Posters.

3 Part 2 The Rationale Once you have completed your poster, write a 1 page paper that analyzes your poster. Use your notes taken in class as well as the ones provided on the website to help you in writing your rationale. You should discuss the following merits in detail: 1) Purpose/Goal what is the poster attempting to do? What is the message? Ex. Enlisting young men/women to enlist, getting support for the war effort, buying victory bonds, anti-communist, OUI/NON Campaign, Anti-Bill 101, etc. 2) Target Audience Who is the poster being directed to? 3) Who Made it? - Is the government responsible for making this poster? Private citizens? Corporations? Pro-Francophone? Pro-Anglophone? Etc. 4) Techniques Used Peer pressure, important sounding speech, manipulating the truth, bias, etc. 5) TIME PERIOD Which important period in History is your poster referring to? Describe it give it a brief synopsis. Your rationale must be typed, minimum 1 page, size font, double spaced. Staple it to the back of your poster. Part 3 The Presentation The presentation component will be 3-5 minutes in length should include the use of visual aids (i.e. Costumes, Video, Overheads, Music, Power Point) in addition to your actual poster. If you have a copy of your poster in a jpeg file, you can post it on the overhead using the laptop proxima. Be creative. During your presentation, you should cover the following in your rationale: What your poster is trying to persuade people to do (the purpose/goal) The different techniques you employed in your poster to achieve the posters purpose. Who your target audience is why. A brief description concerning the person/event/place historical context of your poster. Do not merely read off of your rationale. Think of an interesting way to present your material. Remember, you are attempting to justify to your audience (your teacher your classmates) why your poster is the best one! Arrange with your teacher the date time you will be presenting. See the accompanying evaluation rubric. Students who fail to present during their scheduled presentation time will receive a mark of ZERO for that section unless other arrangements are made before h with your teacher. KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS PROJECT COMPRISES 15% OF YOUR FINAL MARK!!!!!!

5 Culminating Project - Propaga Poster/Rationale/Presentation Checklist As you finish each item of your culminating project, be sure to check it off on the checklist in order to help you stay organized to stay on top of things Check once completed: Criteria Poster is created using ADOBE PHOTOSHOP or alternate program with correct dimensions (8.5x11). Poster contains slogan. Poster is coloured. Poster contains pictures/images that are reflective of the time period. Poster is NOT just downloaded off of the internet. Rationale explanation included. Rationale explanation 1 page minimum. Rationale explanation typed using size font. Rationale analyzed correctly (Purpose/Goal, Target Audience, Techniques Used, etc.) Rationale secured to back of poster. Presentation date booked. Materials for presentation booked (i.e. TV, laptop, proxima, CD player, costumes, etc). Poster brought for presentation. Speech/agenda for presentation prepared. All materials ready for presentation. POSTER/RATIONALE DUE DATE: Anytime during the week of June 1 st to 5 th PRESENTATION DUE DATE: Signup for week of June 8 th to 12 th (You must submit your project before you present. Students who do not submit a poster/rationale will not be able to present will receive a mark of ZERO (0%).
