1 Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar is one of the constituent units of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi. It provides academic and technical support to the states of Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in all areas of school education. The institute has a Demonstration Multipurpose School attached to it which functions as its laboratory school to carry out educational innovations and strategies. Major Activities of the Institute during RESEARCH Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar is a recognised centre of educational research for undertaking doctoral level research. A number of research scholars are working for their Ph.D. degree under the guidance of institute faculty in areas such as Science and Mathematics education, language teaching and learning, impact of national educational schemes and projects, educational development of the disadvantaged population groups, women s education, education of the disabled, correlates of educational achievements, etc. The following projects were carried out during ! Content-cum-Pedagogy Enrichment Programme for Master Trainers in Chemistry.! Training Programme on Design and Development of Question Papers in Vocational Subjects at Higher Secondary Level.! Orientation of KRPs on Grading System at Higher Secondary Level.! Training of KRPs in Teaching of Science at Secondary Level.! Orientation programme on Implementation of Education for Peace in Secondary Schools of the State of Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal.! Orientation of DIET faculty on Health Education at Primary Level.! Training of KRPs on Organisation of Classroom Transaction in Multigrade Context.! Induction Programme for Teacher Educators and Principals of DIETs of West Bengal and Bihar.! Orientation of Headmasters and Inspectors of Schools on Monitoring on Quality Dimensions in Secondary Education.! Training of Key Resource Persons of West Bengal State in Curriculum Development.! Training of Master Trainers of KVS, NVS and CBSE affiliated Schools on New Textbooks Developed by NCERT following NCF-2005.! Training programme on NCF-2005 for institutions run by Minorities. Other Programmes SSA Programmes Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) cell has been constituted in the institute to monitor and evaluate SSA activities in the states. The SSA Cell has undertaken the following activities in the current year. 1. Regional level sharing meeting on Quality of Elementary Education. 2. Development and maintenance of Database of elementary education. 3. Study of impact of need based interventional strategies in some low achieving adopted schools on quality of school process. National Population Education Programme RIE, Bhubaneswar is one of the implementing agencies for the NPEP which seeks to institutionalise population education at all levels of education. Besides conducting training workshops for teacher-educators and contributing to the production of resource materials, the institute is also involved in the monitoring of the NPEP and the study of its impact. 215
3 Internships in Teaching Internship in Teaching for B.Ed. Part-II Two-month Internship in teaching for the students of B.Ed. Part-II commenced in 2 July to 31 August 2007 followed with an orientation programme held for the trainees, cooperating school personnel and supervisors from June The following activities were planned and conducted by the trainees during internship in the cooperating schools.! Delivery of sixty lessons in two method subjects with detailed lesson plans.! Delivery of twenty lessons in two method subjects with lesson notes.! Formulating scheme of lesson and activities for the period of two months in two method subjects and school processes.! Conducting achievement tests in the two method subjects and analysing the test results.! Conducting action research on one problem of the school.! Observation of 5 lessons delivered by peer trainees.! Preparation of report on teaching aids used during internship in respective classes.! The internship was held for the trainees of Orissa at Bargarh, Orissa in four schools and for the trainees of Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal at Maithan, Bihar in six schools. The programme was followed with post internship conference held on 4 September 2007 during which the teaching aid exhibition was organised and feedback was received from trainees and supervisors for further improvement of the programme. Pre-internship in Teaching for B.Ed. Part-I The pre-internship programme for B.Ed. Part-I is divided into two phases. In Phase I, the skills of teaching were practised following the micro-teaching cycle from the month of August 2007 to January Weekly four hours were allotted to practise seven teaching skills like skill of introducing a lesson, skill of explaining, skill of questioning, skill of reinforcement, skill of stimulus variation, skill of illustration with examples, skill of using black-board. After mastering the skills the trainees multicultural school placement phase was conducted. It was conducted from 21 January to 2 February 2008 during which trainees were placed in school exposure programme in three types of schools such as urban, rural and tribal. For the students of Orissa, Kendrapara, Orissa was selected as the centre and for students other than Orissa were placed in Gaya, Bihar. Students were exposed to different activities during the programme such as managing substitution classes, conducting different co-scholastic activities during school processes, conducting case study, delivering two lessons in each method subjects, report on teaching aids used during delivery of lessons and observing different lessons taken by regular school teachers in different subjects.the post-multicultural placement session was conducted on 5 February 2008 to collect feedback from the trainees and supervisors for further improvement of the programme. 216
4 Internship in Teaching in B.Sc. B.Ed. Part-IV The programme was conducted in two phases. Phase I pre-internship commenced from the month of July The trainees were exposed to individual teaching skills and lesson planning in two method subjects for 4 hours a week. They practised teaching skills through micro-teaching cycle. The pre-internship followed the cooperating school personnel conference which was held from 31 December 2007 to 2 January The internship in teaching was conducted from 7 January 2008 to 5 February 2008 in eleven cooperating schools located in Bhubaneswar. The activities conducted by the trainees along with delivering 30 lessons in two method subjects were observation of 5 lessons delivered by peer group, conducting achievement test and analysing the result in two method subjects, preparation of report on teaching aids and preparation of report on school processes. The post-internship conference was conducted on 8 February 2008 for receiving feedback from the trainees and supervisors for further improvement of the programme. Major Contributions of the Faculty Professor Vijay Kumar Sunwani, Principal made presentation on integrating teaching with ICT in Dean s Forum meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka in June He attended the meetings as a central government nominee for national award to teachers of Orissa in August 2007, for Assam in December and West Bengal in March He assisted in organising the programmes such as Multilingualism in a tribal context, Science education, Nurturance programme, Evaluation and organised the exhibition Rethinking Women He made a presentation on What We had Achieved since the Colombo Visit in the Dean s Forum Meeting held at Australia. He conducted the programmes on Education of the Minorities and a manual for the primary stage. His papers published include: Body Language and English Language Teaching. Cycle Rims and Railway Tracts, Tructs and Limousines: the Childhood of Raju and Raju as a Child. The Guide for the seminar on RK Narayan held at RIE Mysore; Changing Ishtyle in Englis(h). (Canadian version) and MERI Journal, New Delhi, April Dr. Pritish Chandra Acharya, Reader coordinated the programme Contentcum-Pedagogy Enrichment for the PGTs in History in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Port Blair) from December His publication include: National Movement and Politics in Orissa, Sage Publications India Private Ltd., Delhi, March 2008; Itihasara Samikshya (in Oriya). Orissa Book Emporium, Cuttack, December 2007; Cultural Encounter and Social World at Margins: Beyond Colonial and Derivative Discourses.Voices of Gangadhar Meher; a Western Orissa s Weaver Poet. Social Science Probings, Vol.19, No.2, December 2007, New Delhi (Co-author Shri Krishna) and also translated Inder Malhotra s Indira Gandhi into Oriya. The book was published by National Book Trust of India, New Delhi, May A manuscript on Gopabandhu Das Chayanika (selected writings of Gopabandhu Das) in Oriya accepted for publication by National Book Trust of India, New Delhi. Dr. (Mrs.) Sandhya Rani Sahoo, Reader coordinated a 21-day Refresher Course for English PGTs of Navodaya Vidyalayas from 18 April to 8 May 2007; English 217
5 in Teleconferencing Classes XI-XII, and Primary classes and Development of English Manual for Classes IX-X. She was a resource person in 21-day Refresher course for PGTs in English of Navodaya Vidyalayas from 23 May to 14 June 2007; Master trainers programme from June to September 2007; Development of English Manuals for Classes I-V. Member of the core group in the preparation of all the manuals; Master trainers in English classes IX X and XI-XII, NERIE, Shillong; Developing Communication Skill for Librarians on 7-11 January 2008 and in the training programme on National Curriculum Framework-2005 for Minorities (1-5 January, 2008). She acted as an Expert in English for recruitment of teachers TGTs, PGTs and PRTs in various educational institutions and in the English Language Exhibition conducted by DAV Public School, C.S.Pur, Bhubaneswar. She was a panelist in the teleconferencing for Class X English textbook and Supplementary Reader, NCERT, New Delhi. She participated in the international conference on English for Progress organised by British Council at Chennai. Dr (Mrs) Madhuri Mohapatra, Reader was a member of the Committee constituted to review and reformulate the existing B.A., B.Ed., B.Sc. B.Ed. courses. She presented the scheme of B.Sc. B.Ed. (4-year integrated) Course in the seminar on Syllabus Reformulation held at Mysore from November She coordinated the workshop Framing of Syllabus for B.Sc. B.Ed., Four Integrated Course from December She developed the regulations for B.Sc. B.Ed. four-year integrated course. Dr. Dhanalaxmi Dash, Reader jointly published a paper on Education for Sustainable Development: Role of College and Teacher Training Institutions, University of Nesa, Vol-45, No.49. Mrs. Shatarupa Palit, Lecturer was a resource person in a 21-day Refresher Course for PGTs in English of Navodaya Vidyalaya from 18 April to 8 May 2007 and 23 May to 12 June 2007; Development of English Manuals for Classes IX and X and for primary level and was also a member of the Core group in the preparation of the manuals; Developing Communication Skill of Librarians, 7-11 January 2008; Training programme on National Curriculum Framework for Minorities,1-5 January 2008; Development of Training Package for Enhancing Professional Competence of English Teachers at the Secondary Stage and Induction Training for Newly Recruited Teacher Educators and Principals of DIETs of West Bengal and Bihar,14-18 January, She coordinated the orientation programme for Master Trainers in English from June 2007 and teleconferencing programme for different classes. She acted as an expert in English for recruitment of TGTs and PGTs in various educational institutions and evaluation of the performance of teachers in DAV schools. Miss Shampa Das, Lecturer coordinated the Working with Community programme with B.Ed. Part-I (Science and Arts) students held at RIE, Bhubaneswar from 19 November to 13 December She worked as a resource person in the workshop to prepare Bengali Language Syllabus in B.A. Component of B.A. B.Ed. four-year integrated course held from 11 February to 13 December She also coordinated the programme Development of Resource Materials for Teaching Language (Bengali) at Secondary Level from January She contributed in the workshop for the development of teachers manuals in English organised at RIE Bhubaneswar from 5-9 February She was a team member in the project Representing Indian Women ( ). 6 contributed in a workshop for the Revision of Syllabi of Bengali Elementary and Secondary Level. Mrs. Ritanjali Dash, Lecturer acted as a subject expert for selection of teachers in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya from June 2007 at RIE, Bhubaneswar. She evaluated classroom teaching of some of the Social Science teachers of DAV Chandrasekharpur from 3-7 May She contributed in the Working with the Community programme with B.Ed. Part-1, Science and Arts organised at RIE, Bhubaneswar from November She coordinated an orientation programme for Master Trainers of KVS, NVS and CBSE affiliated independent schools on the use of new textbooks developed by NCERT following new syllabi based on NCF-2005 for Classes X, XII through face-to-face mode. She was a resource person in designing the syllabi in Economics for 4-year integrated B.A.B.Ed. held at RIE Bhopal from December 2007 and Induction Programme for Teacher Educators and Principals of DIETs of West Bengal and Bihar from January She was a mentor in the in-service course of PGT (Eco.) in K.V.No.1 held at Bhubaneswar from October She published her research paper Tourism and Natural Resource Management in Orissa in the book Natural Resources and Economic Development of Orissa, Deep and Deep Publisher, New Delhi, Dr. Ch.
