7 THE HONORARY DEGREES SOLOMON HALBERT SNYDER DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Psychiatrist-pharmacologist. Dr. Snyder received his M.D. degree cum laude from Georgetown University in 1962, and he has gained renown as a scholar and lecturer, a national leader in neuropharmacology, and author of important works in the field of brain and behavior. He has worked with the Public Health Service and has received many honors including the Outstanding Science Award of the Maryland Academy of Sciences. Currently he is Distinguished Ser\ice Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology at Johns Hopkins University, where he has been a member of the faculty since Presented by Harold M. Visotsky, Owen L. Coon Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Chairman of the Department, Medical School; Director, Institute of Psychiatry ROBERT ARTHUR SPRECHER DOCTOR OF LAWS Federal judge. A Northwestern alumnus (bachelor of science in economics 1938 and juris doctor 1941), he was a practicing attorney in the Chicago firm of Crowley, Sprecher, Barrett & Karaba from the time of graduation from the Law School until his appointment as United States judge, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, in In public service during his career, Robert Sprecher Avas a member of the Illinois State Board of Law Examiners from 1949 to 1971, a special assistant attorney general from 1957 to 1962, and editor of the Business Lawyer from 1947 to \Vinner of the Ross Essay Contest sponsored by the American Bar Association early in his career, he continued as a contributor to the literature of law. Presented by Dale Park, Jr., Trustee, Northwestern University NORMAN GESCHWIND DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Physician, scientist, scholar. He is the James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology at tlic Harvard University Medical School, where he received his M.D. degree in and chief of the neurological unit of Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. His research has been described as "a fascinating and provocative examination of fundamental questions that concern not neurologists alone but also psychologists, physicians, linguists, speech pathologists, educators, anthropologists, historians of medicine, philosophers and all others interested in the characteristic modes of human activity, in speech, in perception, and in the learning process generally." 8 ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-THIRD COMMENCEMENT MEYER HOWARD ABRAMS DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS Humanistic scholar. Distinguished author of numerous significant \\orks and a leading American educator, Meyer Abrams is editor of the Xorton Anthology of English Literature. Since 1945 he has been on the faculty of Cornell University, where from 1960 to 1971 he was the Frederick J. ^Vhiton Professor of English Literature and since 1973 has been the Class of 1916 Professor. While the Romantic period is his specialty, he has made German literature and criticism almost as much a part of his interests as English. The internationally acclaimed School of Criticism and Theorv. at the University of California in Irvine, will be relocated at Northwestern this year, due in large measure to the efforts of Meyer Abrams. Presented by Donald E. Collins, Associate Provost, Northwestern Uriiversity GERARD DEBREU DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Mathematical economist. Regarded as one of the founders of modern mathematical economics, Gerard Debreu has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, since His name has been long associated with the effort to make economic theory mathematically and logically rigorous. He received his doctorate in 1956 from the L'niversitv of Paris. His dissertation, Theory of Value, remains a classic statement of the fundamental theorems of equilibrium theory. Presented by Truman F. Bewley. Professor of Economics, College of Arts and Sciences HAROLD JOACHIM DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS Graphics scholar. Recognized internationally as a scholar in the historv of the graphic arts, Harold Joachim is curator of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago, ^vhere for three decades North'^vestern students and alumni have been recipients of his expertise and welcome guests in his Print Room. He is justly famous for his publications, being climaxed now bv the extensive and definitive catalogues of Art Institute drawings cturently appearing in sequence and arranged bv national schools. Presented b\ Bryan S. Reid, Jr., Trustee, Xorthwestern L'nii'ersity JACK AARON SIMON DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Geologist. He has been chief of the Illinois Geological Survev since having served previously with distinction as head of its coal division for 25 vears. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in geologv at the L'niversity of Illinois and serving in the U.S. Army and Air Force, Jack Simon did graduate work at Northwestern, , and became a protege and associate of Gilbert H. Cadv. He has been a member of the facultv at the L'niversitv of Illinois since Recognized as a leading geologist and authority on metallurgy- and mining engineering, he received in 1975 the Gilbert H. 9 NORTHWESTERN UNI\'ERSITY ISAIAH BERLIN DOCTOR OF LITERATURE Educator. President of Wolfson College at Oxford University, , Sir Isaiah Berlin now is a fellow of All Souls College there. He is recognized as one of the most creative critics and historians of Russian and Soviet literature, and he is a highly respected historian of philosophical ideas and an influential authority on Soviet literature and culture. He was Winston Churchill's closest adviser on the USSR during World War II, and he was decorated as commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1946 and knighted in He received the Order of Merit in He is the author of The Hedgehog and the Fox, Historical Inevitability, Four Essays on Liberty, and many other works about notable authors and thinkers. Presented by Irwin Weil, Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Chairman of the Department, College of Arts and Sciences FRANK ALBERT COTTON DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Chemist and educator. Frank Albert Cotton, an internationally recognized inorganic chemist, is the Robert A. Welch Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Texas A&M University. The recipient of numerous honors and awards, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. His research style, as significant as the results, has had significant impact upon the way inorganic research is conducted today. He received his Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1955 and was a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the faculty of Texas A&M in Presented by Blaine J. Yarrington, Trustee, Northwestern University BOB BANNER DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS Television producer-director. Recognized by scholars as a key figure in the history of television productions, Bob Banner began with "Garroway-At-Large" in 1949 and has created or directed such varied programming as "Omnibus," "The Entertainers," dramatic and musical specials, and many shows featuring Fred Waring, Perry Como, Garry Moore, Dinah Shore and other superstars. He has won numerous awards. From December 1978 to October 1980 he devoted a great deal of time to volunteer work in producing "The Way They Were," a nationally distributed television showcase of Northwestern University talent.
