1 INTRODUCTION: CPT CODES & ICD-9 CODES Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is a listing of descriptive terms and identifying codes for reporting medical services and procedures performed by physicians. The CPT codes are useful for administrative management purposes including claims processing. The International Classification of Diseases, 9 th Revision (ICD-9) is designed for the classification of morbidity and mortality information for statistical purposes, and for the indexing of hospital records by disease and operations, for data storage and retrieval. 8/5/2010 1
