revised on: 01 July 2008 print date: page 3 of Possibly harmful effects on human beings Inhalation: repeated inhaling of larger amounts of cement dust during a longer period of time increases the risk of lung diseases. Eyes: eye contact with cement (dry or moist) may cause serious and possibly permanent eye damage. Skin: cement may have irritant effect on moist skin (owing to perspiration or air moisture). Extended skin contact with moist cement, ready-mixed concrete or mortar may cause skin irritations, dermatitis or serious skin damage (e.g. when kneeling in moist mortar or concrete, even if long trousers are worn). Skin damage develops without feeling pain in the beginning. For further details see (1). 2.4 Possibly harmful effects on the environment With normal use cement is regarded as not hazardous to the environment. 2.5 Further possible hazards The cement is poor in chromate, either on its own or because the content of sensitising chromium(vi) was lowered due to additives to a value of less than 2 ppm in the cement proportion of the cement ready for use. Precondition for the effectiveness of chromate reduction is an appropriate storage and careful attention of the date of expiry (see points 7.2 and 15). 3 COMPOSITION/INDICATION OF COMPONENTS 3.1 Chemical characterisation Standard cement according to DIN EN 197-1, EN and DIN or if necessary approval notification of the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (translated: German Institute for Structural Engineering) contains: Portland cement clinker mass-% Blast furnace sand 6 95 mass-% Natural pozzolana (trass) 6 55 mass-% Sulphate (gypsum/semihydrate/anhydrite) 0 9 mass-% Cement additives < 1 mass-% 3.2 Hazardous ingredients Designation Portland cement clinker CAS no. EINECS no. Concentration Classification range [mass-%] Code letters R phrases Xi 37, 38, 41, 43 The wording of the mentioned R phrases is to be taken from point FIRST AID MEASURES If a physician is visited, please present this safety data sheet. 4.1 After inhaling (in accidental manner) Provide for fresh air. Dust should be removed immediately from neck and nose areas. With medical problems such as nausea, cough or continued irritation consult physician. 4.2 After eye contact Do not rub out eyes dryly, because additional cornea damage is possible in the event of mechanical wear. If necessary remove contact lens and rinse eye with opened lid gap immediately under flowing water for a period of time of at least 45 minutes in order to eliminate all particles. If possible use isotonic eye rinsing solution (0,9% NaCl). Always consult an occupational physician or ophthalmologist. 4.3 After skin contact Remove dry cement and rinse with abundant water. Rinse moist cement with much water. Remove soaked clothes, shoes, watches etc. Clean these objects thoroughly before reuse. With skin problems
revised on: 01 July 2008 print date: page 4 of 9 consult physician. 4.4 After swallowing (in accidental manner) Rinse mouth while conscious and drink abundant water. Do not cause vomiting. Consult physician or emergency control centre for poisoning cases. 5 FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES 5.1 Suitable extinguishing media Product is combustible or explosive neither in delivery condition nor in the mixed with water condition ready for processing. Extinguishing media and fire fighting measures are to be co-ordinated with the surrounding fire. 5.2 Unsuitable extinguishing media for reasons of safety Not applicable. 5.3 Special hazards arising from preparation, its combustion products or resulting gases Not applicable. 5.4 Special protective equipment for fire fighting No special measures required, because cement does not involve any fire relevant hazard. 6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES 6.1 Personal Protection Wear personal protective clothing (see point 8.2). References concerning safe handling are to be observed in accordance with point 7.1. An emergency plan is not required. 6.2 Environmental protection: Prevent cement from entering in drains, surface water or ground water. 6.3 Procedures for cleaning: Clean up spilt cement as dry as possible. Dry cement: for cleaning up preferably use dry processes which do not cause dust formation, e.g. industrial vacuum cleaners with appropriate filters, or moisten cement and remove as moist cement. In case of dust formation while cleaning up dryly the use of personal protective equipment is absolutely imperative. Moist cement: clean up moist cement mechanically, let it harden on foil mat or in a vessel and dispose according to point HANDLING AND STORAGE Do not store or use in the vicinity of food, beverages or tobacco products. 7.1 Handling Please follow the references under point 8. Avoid dust formation: In the case of goods shipped in bags and use of open mixing vessels fill in water first, then let pour in carefully the dry cement. Keep height of fall small. Let agitators start slowly. Do not squeeze empty bags or use an over bag only when doing so. The carrying of cement bags may lead to injuries of the back, arms, shoulders and legs. For this reason one has to be careful while handling them. 7.2 Storage Always store product in original container. Store loose cement in silos which are dry (minimise internal condensation), watertight, clean and pro-
revised on: 01 July 2008 print date: page 5 of 9 tected against impurities. Do not walk in cement containing stores such as silos, vessels, silo vehicles or other containers without appropriate safety measures, because there is danger to be buried and to be suffocated. In such closed rooms cement may form walls and bridges which however can collapse unexpectedly. Pre-packaged products must be stored in closed bags on the floor, under cool, dry conditions, without strong draught, in order to avoid quality losses. Bags must be stacked up solidly. 7.3 Control of water-soluble chromium(vi) content With cements which contain chromate reducing agent it is to be noted that the effectiveness of the reduction agent decreases with time. For this reason cement bags and/or delivery documents contain information regarding the minimum time of effectiveness. Within this period of time the content of watersoluble chromium(vi) remains below the value of % (determination according to EN ). Manufacturer s instructions have to be followed. With improper storage (access of humidity) or exceeded date of expiry the contained chromate reducing agent may lose its effectiveness ahead of schedule and sensitizing effect of the cement cannot be excluded when there is skin contact. 8 EXPOSURE CONTROL AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT 8.1 Exposure limiting values Limiting value Exposure way Exposure frequency Remark Water-soluble chromium(vi): 2 ppm dermal short-term (acute) EN long-term (repeated) Portland cement (dust): 5 (E) mg/m³ inhalative short-term (acute) TRGS 900 General dust limiting value 3 (A) mg/m³ 10 (E) mg/m³ long-term (repeated) (2) 8.2 Limitation and control of exposure Limitation and control of exposure for the working place General protective and hygiene measures: Avoid contact with eyes and skin. During processing possibly do not kneel or stand in fresh mortar or concrete. If this is nevertheless necessary absolutely wear suitable watertight protective clothing. Change soaked clothing immediately. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while working. Wash your hands and take a shower if necessary, in order to remove adherent cement dust. Clean contaminated clothing, shoes, watches etc. before using them again. Respiratory protection: In case of exceeding exposure limit values (e.g. possible when mixing), use particle filtering face piece FFP1 (white) (see instructions BGR 190 (3)). Hand protection: Wear watertight, wear- and alkali-resistant protective gloves. Suitable are for example nitrile-soaked cotton gloves with CE marking (see instructions BGR 195 (3)). Respect maximum wearing time. Leather gloves are not suitable because of their water permeability. Eye protection: In case of dust generation or danger of splashing, use tight-closing safety goggles according to EN 166. Skin protection: For skin protection use skin protection plan according to BGR 197 (3). Especially after work use skin care products. Body protection: Wear closed long-sleeved protective clothing and sealed and sturdy shoes. If contact with fresh mortar and concrete cannot be avoided the protective clothing should also be watertight. Make sure that no fresh mortar or concrete enters the shoes or boots from above Limitation and control of environmental exposure In accordance with existing technology.
revised on: 01 July 2008 print date: page 6 of 9 9 PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES 9.1 General information Appearance: powder Colour: grey or white Odour: odourless 9.2 Important information on health and environment protection as well as safety Parameter Value Remark ph-value (T=20 ºC) in mixed form when used as intended Average particle size 5 30 µm Melting range > 1,250 C Density g/cm³ Bulk density (T=20ºC) 900 1,500 kg/m³ Water solubility (T=20ºC) g/l All further physical-chemical parameters according to appendix II of the regulation (EC) 1907/2006 are not relevant. 10 STABILITY AND REACTIVITY 10.1 Stability Dry cement is stable as long as it is stored appropriately (point 7) and tolerates most other building products. Cement mixed with water as intended hardens and forms a solid mass which does not react with its surroundings Conditions to be avoided Humidity during storage may lead to lump formation and loss of product quality Substances to be avoided Uncontrolled use of aluminium powder in moist cement should be avoided because of hydrogen being formed Dangerous decomposition products No dangerous decomposition known 11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION 11.1 Acute toxicity Eye contact: Direct contact with cement may lead to cornea damage, on the one hand because of mechanical impact and on the other hand because of subsequent irritation or inflammation. Direct contact with larger amounts of dry cement or splashes of moist cement may have effects which reach from moderate eye irritation (e.g. conjunctivitis or blepharitis) to serious eye damage and loss of sight Skin contact: Cement has skin and mucous membrane irritating effect. Dry cement in contact with moist skin or skin in contact with moist or wet cement may lead to different irritant and inflammatory skin reactions, e.g. reddening and fissuring. On-going contact in connection with mechanical wear may lead to serious skin damage. Acute dermal toxicity: limit test, rabbit, 24 hours exposition, 2000 mg/kg weight no lethality (4). Swallowing: Swallowing of larger amounts may lead to irritations of the gastrointestinal tract. Inhaling: Exposition with cement dust may irritate the respiration tract (throat, neck, lungs). Coughing, sneezing and breathlessness may be the consequence if exposition is above the maximum allowable concentration at work.
revised on: 01 July 2008 print date: page 7 of Chronic effects Inhaling: Long-term exposition with respirable cement dust above the maximum allowable concentration at work may lead to coughing, breathlessness and chronically obstructive changes of the respiratory tracts. Carcinogenicity: A causal connection between cement exposition and cancer was not identified (1). Contact dermatitis/ sensitizing effect: Individual persons may suffer from skin eczema after contact with moist cement. This results either from the ph-value (irritant contact dermatitis) or from immunological reactions with water-soluble chromium(vi) (allergic contact dermatitis) (5). Reaction of the skin may occur in different forms, from slight rash until serious dermatitis, and is the consequence of a combination of both mechanisms. An exact diagnosis is possible often only with difficulties. Therefore, the water-soluble chromium(vi) content has to be reduced below the value of 2 ppm by using an appropriate reducing agent. As long as the best before date of the chromate reducing agent is not exceeded, a sensitizing effect is not to be expected (6) Medical consequences due to exposition Inhaling of cement dust may worsen existing illnesses or impairments of the respiratory organs as e.g. asthma or pulmonary emphysema. Contact with cement dust may worsen existing skin or eye diseases. 12 ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION 12.1 Ecological toxicity The product is regarded as not hazardous for the environment. Eco-toxicological research with Portland cement on Daphnia magna (U.S. EPA, 1994a) (7) and Selenastrum Coli (U.S. EPA, 1993) (8) has found only a minor toxic effect. For this reason, the LC50 and EC50 values could not be determined (9). As well, no toxic effects on sediments could be identified (10). However, the release of larger quantities of cement in water may lead to ph-value shift and thus may be toxic for aquatic life under particular circumstances Mobility Dry cement is not volatile. During its application finest particles however may be swirled up and remain in the air as floating particles Persistency and degradability, bioaccumulative potential, other damaging effects Not applicable, because cement is inorganic mineral material. 13 DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS 13.1 Product with exceeded effective date of the reducing agent and if its content of water soluble chromium(vi) amounts to more than %: The product may not be used or put into circulation, unless it is used in controlled, closed and fully automatic processes or it is retreated with chromium reducing agent Unused remaining quantity of dry product Take up dryly. Mark container. Avoiding exposition to dust, reuse if possible (pay attention to date of expiry). In case of disposal, let harden with water and dispose according to point Moist products and product sludge Let harden moist products and product sludge and do not let them reach the drainage system or waters. Disposal according to point Hardened products due to addition of water Dispose by taking into account regulations of local authorities. Do not let them reach the drainage system. Disposal of hardened product like concrete wastes and concrete sludge. Disposal code according to AVV: depending on origin as or Waste labelling according to AVV: : concrete; : concrete wastes and sludge.
revised on: 01 July 2008 print date: page 8 of Uncleaned packagings Empty packaging completely and provide for recycling. Otherwise, disposal according to disposal code AVV: (paper wastes and cardboard packagings). 14 TRANSPORT INFORMATION Cement is not subject to international dangerous goods regulations (IMDG, IATA, ADR/RID). Therefore, no classification is required. 15 STATUTORY PROVISIONS 15.1 EU Regulations Material safety assessment A material safety assessment is not required because cement is a preparation Labelling Classification and labelling according to EU guideline 1999/45/EG Hazard symbol and code letter: Xi Indication of danger: irritant R phrases: R37/38 Irritating to respiratory system and skin.
