Master's Degree in Infmation Systems The Master of Science in Infmation Systems program emphasizes the application of computers to real-wld problem solving, focusing principally on software and peoplerelated issues in the development of computer applications. It is appropriate f a range of students, including industry practitioners seeking career advancement, students wishing to expand on their undergraduate computing wk, and individuals wishing to make a career change. Admission Requirements All University and Graduate School requirements f admission to a degree program of the Graduate School apply. Additional School of Infmation Technology requirements are listed below. Applicants must have a bachel s degree from an accredited university college and must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale, calculated over the last 60 hours taken (either graduate undergraduate). The undergraduate degree need not be in computing. Applicants must submit sces from the Graduate Recd Examination (GRE). The GRE Revised General Test Verbal Reasoning sce f admitted students typically exceeds 143, the Quantitative Reasoning sce exceeds 140, and the sum of these two sces exceeds 300. Sces on the pri version of the GRE General Test typically exceed 350 f Verbal Reasoning, 400 f Quantitative Reasoning, and the sum of these two sces exceeds International students must present a TOEFL sce of at least 88 on the Internet-based test, 230 on the computer-based test, 570 on the paper-based test an IELTS sce with a band of at least 7.0. Students may be admitted to the Infmation Systems program f fall spring semesters with preference given to student applications received by March 1 f fall (August) admission and by September 1 f spring (January) admission. Full-time students in the Infmation Systems program should expect to spend at least two years completing the master s program once foundation coursewk has been finished. All 400-level courses in the School of Infmation Technology have restricted enrollments and are not open to graduate students-at-large. Opptunities f non-infmation Systems majs, including students-at-large and graduate students in other majs, to take undergraduate and 3xx.05-level IT courses are also limited, and permission to register must be obtained from the graduate advis (302 Old Union Building). Such students may be required to furnish official transcripts that show the degree earned and completion of the prerequisites f the course in which the student is seeking enrollment. Programs Offered The School offers four sequence options to complete the Master of Science degree. The sequences are Geographic Infmation Systems, Internet Application Development, Netwk and Security Management, and Systems Development. Within each sequence the student may choose to complete a 36 semester hour thesis option, a 39 semester hour project option, a 39 semester hour course option. Curriculum Requirements This degree assumes an undergraduate knowledge base in infmation technology, which students with computer-related undergraduate degrees will typically have acquired. Students lacking sufficient background will need to complete fundamental courses befe enrolling in the Infmation Systems ce courses. Students lacking sufficient background should expect to complete some all of the following courses with a grade of B better: IT 254 Hardware and Software Concepts IT 261 Systems Development I IT 275 Java as a Second Language OR IT 168 Structured Problem Solving Using the Computer and IT 178 Computer Applications Programming IT Data Communications IT Database Processing The graduate advis will determine specific requirements. All master s degree programs require a minimum of 50 percent of the non-thesis credit hours applied to the degree to be 400-level courses above. To provide a common background, each student is required to complete all courses in the following ce areas: IS Technology (12 hours) IT 432 Systems Analysis and Design IT 478 Advanced Database Management IT Fundamentals of Infmation Assurance and Security IT Practical Telecommunications Netwking IS Management (6 hours) IT 463 Infmation Technology Project Management IT 496 Infmation Technology Strategy and Policy Additional Course (3 hours) IT 497 Introduction to Research Methodology All students must take IT 497 during their first year in the program. There are three options available within this degree: the Thesis Option, the Project Option, and the Course Option.

Internet Application Development Sequence: IT , ; and 1 of the following: IT 467, 468, 485. Netwk and Security Management Sequence: IT 450, 477; and 1 of the following: IT , , 374, , Systems Development Sequence: IT 467, 468; 1 of the following: IT , 368, 485. Total of 36 hours Students in the Thesis Option must complete a minimum of 18 hours of 400-level coursewk, not including thesis hours. Project Option: The Project Option requires a minimum of 39 semester hours as follows: Ce courses (21 hours) IT 494 Master's Project (6 hours) Choose one of the following sequences (12 hours): Geographic Infmation Systems Sequence: GEO 303, 304; and 2 of the following: GEO 305, 488; IT , , 467. Internet Application Development Sequence: IT , ; and 2 of the following: IT 368, 467, 468, 485. Netwk and Security Management Sequence: IT 450, 477; and 2 of the following: IT , , 374, , Systems Development Sequence: IT 467, 468; and 2 of the following: IT , 368, 485. Total of 39 hours Students in the Project Option must complete a minimum of 18 hours of 400-level coursewk, not including project hours. Course Option: The Course Option requires a minimum of 39 semester hours as follows: Ce courses (21 hours). Technical Communication (3 hours): ENG 349. Choose one of the following sequences (15 hours) Geographic Infmation Systems Sequence: GEO 303, 304; IT of the following: GEO 305, 488; IT , , 467. Internet Application Development Sequence: IT , , 495; and 2 of the following: IT 368, 467, 468, 485. Netwk and Security Management Sequence: IT 450, 477, 495; and 2 of the following: IT , , 374, , Systems Development Sequence: IT 467, 468, 495; and 2 of the following: IT , 368, 485. Total of 39 hours Students in the Course Option must complete a minimum of 21 hours of 400-level coursewk. Graduate Certificate Programs The School of Infmation Technology offers several graduate certificate programs. The certificates are designed f individuals who would like to gain specialized knowledge in one of the areas of the certificates without the commitment of completing an entire degree program. The certificate programs provide students with focused studies and exposure to the very latest topics and trends in the IT industry and various opptunities f career advancement. Courses completed as part of the certificates may also be counted towards the requirements of the Master of Science in Infmation Systems with official admission to the graduate program. Admission Requirements All University and Graduate school requirements f admission to a graduate certificate program apply. Additional school requirements are listed below. Admission to the graduate certificate programs requires an earned bachel s degree in an infmation technology related field from an accredited four-year university college with a minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale calculated over the last 60 hours taken (either undergraduate graduate). Extensive wk experience in the infmation technology field is also considered towards admission. Applicants with a GPA less than 3.0 must submit sces of the GRE Revised General Test to be considered. International students must prove proficiency in the English language. Enterprise Computing Systems Graduate Certificate The Enterprise Computing Systems Graduate Certificate is designed f IT professionals who are interested in pursuing further professional development in the mainframe-based large scale enterprise computing systems area. This certificate program prepares students to apply computing system development and integration knowledge to large scale enterprise systems. Three courses, IT , , and are required to earn the certificate. Prerequisites: IT , IT 261, consent of the graduate advis.

3 Infmation Technology 57 Infmation Assurance and Security Graduate Certificate The Infmation Assurance and Security Graduate Certificate is designed f IT professionals who are interested in continuing education in methodologies and tools necessary f protecting infmation and infmation systems. The certificate provides an in-depth study of protecting the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of infmation using technology, people, and policy. The courses required to receive this certificate have been certified by the National Security Agency; students completing this certificate will also receive certification f the CNSS 4011 national standard. Two ce courses, IT and 450, and one of IT are required to earn the certificate. Prerequisites: IT 261 consent of the graduate advis. Internet Application Development Graduate Certificate The Internet Application Development Graduate Certificate is designed to provide a specialized education in emerging technologies f students who seek further studies in Web development. The certificate is intended to prepare students to meet the growing demand f qualifications in this field. Two ce courses, IT , , and one of IT 467, 468, 485, are required to earn the certificate. Prerequisites: IT 261 and consent of the graduate advis. Netwk and Telecommunications Management Graduate Certificate The Netwk and Telecommunications Management Graduate Certificate is designed f IT professionals who are interested in pursuing further professional development in the Telecommunications and Netwking area. This certificate program prepares students to better understand different netwk and telecommunications technologies and management methodologies. Two ce courses, IT and 477 and one of IT are required to earn the certificate. Prerequisite: IT consent of the graduate advis. Systems Analyst Graduate Certificate The Systems Analyst Graduate Certificate is designed f IT professionals who are interested in pursuing further professional development in the Systems Analyst area. This certificate program prepares students to better understand different infmation systems development methodologies and develop the skills to manage infmation systems projects. Three courses, IT 432, 463, and 478, are required to earn the certificate. Prerequisites: IT 261 and consent of the graduate advis. Infmation Technology Courses F a 300-level IT course to be used toward the master s degree in Infmation Systems, students must enroll in a graduate section of the course designated by.05 (e.g., IT ) PRINCIPLES OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING Fundamentals of software engineering. Topics include specification models, metrics, design fundamentals, interface design, quality assurance, and automated tools. Prerequisites: IT 179, 261. Consent of the graduate advis CONCEPTS OF PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES Survey of pragmatic, syntactic and semantic structure of programming languages. Procedural, logic-iented, object-iented and other contempary languages included. Prerequisite: IT 179. Consent of the graduate advis INTRODUCTION TO THE THEORY OF COMPUTATION Basic concepts in computing they. Topics include recursive definitions, regular expressions, transition graphs, automata, nondeterminism, grammars, parsing, decidability, Turing machines. Prerequisite: IT 279 consent of graduate advis INTRODUCTION TO ENTERPRISE COMPUTING SYSTEMS Introduction to the mainframe enterprise computing systems, ganizations, architectures, operating systems, netwking, hardware and software utilities, and applications. Prerequisite: IT Consent of the graduate advis OPERATING, DATA COMMUNICATIONS, NETWORKING, AND SECURITY OF ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS Mainframe Operating Systems, process communications, netwking, protocols, enterprise system clustering, front/back-end hardware/software component connections, administrations, and security. Prerequisite: IT 225 consent of graduate advis ADVANCED ENTERPRISE COMPUTING SYSTEMS Enterprise systems netwking, system programming, application development, perfmance analysis and improvement, wkload and resource management, and system security. Prerequisites: IT 261, , and ; Maj min only consent of the graduate advis INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Foundations of artificial intelligence including heuristic search and knowledge representation with a survey of several artificial intelligence research areas. Prerequisite: IT 279 consent of graduate advis OBJECT-ORIENTED SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT Main concepts of object-iented technology and a comprehensive methodology f system development. Object-iented analysis, design, and implementation including object-iented databases. Prerequisites: IT 261; consent of the graduate advis ADVANCED BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE AND DATA WAREHOUSING Topics covered include data warehousing, Big Data, data governance, and the future of the business intelligence field. Prerequisite: IT

4 58 Infmation Technology FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND SECURITY Fundamental concepts in infmation assurance and security including modeling, planning, risk management security technology, cryptography, people, and physical security. Prerequisite: IT 261; consent of the graduate advis ADVANCED INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND APPLIED CRYPTOGRAPHY Infmation assurance and security using technology including applied cryptography, authentication protocols, intrusion detection, and anti-malware. Fmerly DATA COMMUNICA- TIONS SECURITY. Prerequisites: IT and ; consent of the graduate advis WEB DEVELOPMENT TECHNOLOGIES Web concepts, infrastructure, development technologies, multitiered program design and implementation, and current issues and trends. Prerequisite: IT 261; consent of the graduate advis ADVANCED WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT They and practice of state-of-the-art technologies f application development f the Web including service-iented and mobile systems. Prerequisite: IT ; consent of the graduate advis INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER GRAPHICS Graphics software and hardware, pipeline model of rendering; 2- D and 3-D modeling, transfmations. Algithms: polygons, lighting, textures, visibility. Prerequisite: IT 279; consent of the graduate advis TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES IN INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND SECURITY Application of current tools and techniques in infmation assurance and security including moniting, malware, penetration testing, and data fensics. Prerequisite: Grade of C better in IT and DESIGNING THE USER INTERFACE Human facts issues in developing infmation systems: task analysis, user interface design guidelines, psychological principles, prototyping interfaces, and user evaluation. Prerequisite: IT 261; consent of the graduate advis. 368 TOPICS IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS Advanced topics in infmation systems, including systems analysis, design, and systems development, and Web development. May be repeated if content is different. Prerequisites: Juni/seni standing; consent of the graduate advis. Prerequisites vary with topic chosen EXTERNAL DATA STRUCTURES External file design, VSAM, IBM utilities and st/merge, basic concepts of IBM/MVS operating systems, and extensive study of JCL. Prerequisites: IT 254 and 272; consent of the graduate advis. 374 TOPICS IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS In-depth study of a topic in Telecommunications such as emerging technologies, netwk administration, netwk management architectures and wireless communications. Emphasizing hands-on use of a netwk operating system. Emphasis is on application, design, and analysis of wireless systems.
