Sappi Europe Mills ALFELD Mill - Germany Alfeld Mill is situated in the village of Alfeld to the south of Hanover in Germany and dates back to The integrated mill uses locally harvested wood to produce totally chlorine-free (TCF) sulphite pulp for its own consumption and manufactures speciality paper. Alfeld Mill offers coated and uncoated speciality papers designed to meet specific specialised end-user customer requirements and Solid Bleached Board (SBB) cartonboards. Alfeld s PM2 is now the world s fastest machine for one side coated speciality papers. EHINGEN Mill - Germany Ehingen Mill is situated on the Danube River in Ehingen, southern Germany. The mill is integrated, pulping beech and spruce wood to produce totally chlorine-free sulphite pulp which is produced mainly for internal use, but also sold to third party customers. A range of coated sheets and reels in matt and silk finishes are produced at the mill. Quality coated papers are available in the grammage range g/m² and are mainly used for the printing of books, brochures, catalogues, leaflets and magazines. KIRKNIEMI Mill - Finland Kirkniemi Mill is located in Lohja, Finland. It produces publication papers which are tailored for high quality publishing and advertising end uses. The grades produced on three paper machines are for heat set web offset printing. The sustainable and innovative papers are developed for demanding end-users. Over 90% of the mill s production is exported. LANAKEN Mill - Belgium Situated alongside the Albert Canal in north-east Belgium, Lanaken Mill is an integrated mill producing chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) from sawmill waste and the waste wood from forest thinnings, meeting just over 60% of its own fibre production requirements. The CTMP plant uses preheated woodchips to obtain strong fibrous pulp, which is then peroxide bleached to obtain the highest grades of mechanical pulp and blended with imported, chlorine-free chemical pulp. The Lanaken Mill holds a unique position within Sappi Europe in that it is the only integrated pulp and paper mill producing a range of coated mechanical and coated fine papers for heat set web offset printing. STOCKSTADT Mill - Germany Stockstadt Mill is situated in the town of Stockstadt, one of the European industrial hubs close to Frankfurt, Germany, on the river Main. It produces coated and uncoated fine paper for sheet fed offset printing. It is an integrated mill with its own pulp production (chlorine free bleached beech sulphite pulp) as well as its own power plant. MAASTRICHT Mill - The Netherlands As the first European mill to produce coated papers, Maastricht Mill has a special place in the history books. It is situated on the Meuse River in the Netherlands. The PM6 at the mill is one of the largest triple coated board machines in the world. Higher grammage sheets in board format are manufactured on this machine, complementing the range of fine coated paper grades produced by Sappi s Gratkorn Mill in Austria. GRATKORN Mill - Austria Paper has been produced at Gratkorn, Austria, for more than four centuries. The mill produces high quality double and triple coated papers which are used for premium quality publications all over the world. Sappi totally revolutionised the mill with the building of one of the largest and most advanced coated fine paper production lines in the world. The mill produces totally chlorine free (TCF) chemical pulp and it has an annual sheet finishing capacity of 875,000 tonnes. About 95% of the mill s production is exported. 12

New Investments 14

In a step that supports Sappi Europe s drive for efficiency and profitability, the company will, during 2014/2015, implement significant investment plans for its Gratkorn (Austria) and Kirkniemi (Finland) mills, amounting to over 126 million Euros. The investment in Kirkniemi, in the order of 56 million Euros, revolves around the building of a new power plant on the mill site, supporting the mill s cost competitiveness and future operations. For Gratkorn, the 70 million Euros investment focuses on upgrading paper pulp production facilities, as well as further improving paper quality, to meet current and future customer requirements. 15

Release Paper Release Paper is used as a mould to put texture on other surfaces, ranging from manmade wood and leather to engineered films and rubber. The textures are developed and produced in Sappi s Westbrook Mill in America and are sold to converters in China, Asia and in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa by our teams based in Belgium and Italy. Release paper is used to manufacture products that surround us in our everyday lives from sports gear, shoes and handbags, sofas and chairs, laminate flooring, work surfaces and waterproof clothing, to aircraft and car interiors. Freeport Honey comb Ripstop Gobi Specialised Cellulose Cellulose is what is left of the wood fibre when the other natural substances found in wood have been removed. It is usually found in long strings, called polymers, and is the most abundant natural organic polymer on earth. It is found in all plant materials and converted for commercial use into dissolving woodpulp. Sappi obtains its cellulose from wood from certified forests or plantations. It is then processed and purified by applying specialised chemistry to extract the cellulose polymers from the wood. This specialised cellulose is used by a wide variety of end users to produce yoghurts, toothpaste, wet-wipes, washing powder, ice-cream and viscose staple fibre (VSF) for clothing and textiles. Over 60% of our production is used in the VSF market. We are the world s largest manufacturer of dissolving wood pulp (from our two mills in Southern Africa and the Cloquet Mill in North America) and export almost all of the production. Wet-wipes Washing powder Ice-Cream Clothing Toothpaste Yoghurt 19

Sustainability Sappi has developed a broader vision of sustainability that imbeds the 3Ps into our business process: People, Planet and Prosperity. People Adding to the wellbeing, safety and health of employees and communities. Planet Contributing to a world of biodiversity, renewable energy and environmental care. Prosperity Aiming at long-term profitability and customer satisfaction through innovation and ethical conduct. 20

Sappi. Eco. Effective. Sappi Certificates Chain of Custody Our fibre sourcing is transparent and traceable Eco-effectiveness is central to Sappi Europe s environmental approach and is a bottom-up story involving everyone at Sappi: Forestry All of our fibre comes from controlled sources and at least 70% of all our fibres are sourced from FSC or PEFC certified forests. Paper mill Each Sappi mill has its own chain of custody coordinator. Internal and additional external auditing ensures that only risk assessed fibres are used for paper production. Our transparent reporting with regard to countries of origin and species used is backed up by independent third party verification. Did you know that it is easier for you to trace the origin of our fibres than the origin of most of the food you eat? Saw mill 30% of our wood needs are covered by wood chips, a saw mill by-product. This cascaded use of wood optimizes material efficiency. Wood purchasing Our wood procurement team meets our pulp mill s needs, combining logistics and security of certified wood supply. Customer With a verification system in place higher up the supply chain, the printer only has to check that the certification claim is correct on the invoices and delivery documents. Consumers The end user can see the FSC or PEFC logo on the final product as a proof of our promise. Committing to sustainability Combining ecology & economy Building on everyday initiatives Optimising our use of natural resources Our eco-effectiveness is your sustainability. Sappi. Eco. Effective. Yes, we care. If we really want to take the environment into consideration, it pays to look at the choice of transportation used to ship our paper to our customers! We wondered whether a switch from the typical truck only system to a combined train/truck delivery method would have an impact on CO 2 emissions. The result was clear: Yes, it pays off! Not only are we reducing CO 2 emissions, we are also able to offer a more flexible service to our customers. Traditionally we have shipped our speciality papers by truck to individual customers. In Germany two of our largest customers are located relatively close to each other. Having checked all environmental and cost aspects, we decided to test the idea of clustering shipments for both customers by train to a nearby transition stock point, from which shorter truck deliveries could then be made. Rather than clocking up over 600 km made up of shipment A (323 km) plus shipment B (306 km) we decided to group the shipments (A+B) to a single midway transition stock point (315 km) from which shorter deliveries could be made to the nearby customers (shipment A = 45 km; shipment B = 15 km). As well as reducing costs and halving the distance travelled, we managed to reduce our CO 2 emissions by 112 tons. Customers benefitted even more with shorter delivery times! We make Sappi eco-effective. How about you? Patrick Steinbrenner and Gunnar Sieber, Alfeld Mill. Hans Jürgen Peichler and Markus Hoeft, Wesel Logistics Center. sappi.com/eco-effective 21

Sustainability Facts 22

Sappi Europe s management systems combine safety, health, environment and quality. This integrated approach enables us to control every dimension of our business. We adhere to official and independent certification schemes. They ensure that our paper comes from sustainable forest and controlled sources; we safeguard biodiversity; we reduce our reliance on fossil fuels; we increase the use of renewable energy within our production processes; we strive to further reduce our emissions; and we promote the sustainable use of raw materials, energy and water. EMAS (European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) registration recognises us as an organisation that goes beyond minimal legal compliance, continuously improves its environmental performance and is fully transparent in its actions. Sappi Europe undertakes and publishes an in-depth regional Sustainability Report every 2 years (2011, 2013). KPIs are reviewed and published on an annual basis. The European report and the Sappi group Sustainability report, can be found on sappi.com Sappi is a pioneer with is Chain-of-Custody Certification for its entire European operations under both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC ) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC ) Schemes. Sappi promotes credible forest certification within our fibre supply chain and monitors the origin of wood fibres and pulp. In so doing, Sappi finances and supports sustainable forest management. Sappi products represent good forest management practice through the supply chain. Sappi was the first paper manufacturer in the world to offer TCF paper, manufactured with Totally Chlorine Free bleached pulp. Sappi plants on average 67 new trees every minute in its commercial plantations. 23

Sappi Stories Where does our wood come from? 24

Where does our wood come from? In order to meet our fibre needs, we manufacture 54% of our pulp from roundwood and wood chips, and buy the other 46% from market pulp suppliers. We have always bought our fibres from known and respectable suppliers, yet customers and the public at large are demanding further reassurance. Is the fibre from a legal source? Is local biodiversity monitored and respected? Sappi sources roundwood from the thinnings of mixed forest stands in European and boreal forests in Scandinavia. The woodchips that we purchase are a by-product from saw-mills who in turn get their roundwood from different forestry sources. Similarly the origins of the pulp that we purchase are diverse. In order to qualify as a supplier to Sappi, you have to agree to our Group Supplier Policy, which outlines Sappi s commitment to sustainable development. It is the procurement team s responsibility to ensure that strict environmental standards are met by our suppliers throughout the chain. 25

Sappi Stories Symbio 26

Symbio By investigating what to do with its fibres outside of paper making, Sappi has continued its entrepreneurial and business-focused activities in a field close to home. Symbio is an initiative that has been driven by the market, and has serious potential. The result is a lighter and more rigid plastic that can be used in a variety of applications, such as loudspeaker enclosures, parts for car interiors, furniture, consumer electronics and toys. The material is produced in the form of white pellets that can be processed in the same way as traditional plastic pellets. By mixing 20 to 50% of cellulose fibres into a polypropylene plastic, its rigidity will be vastly improved. It is quite normal to use fillers in plastic, but by using cellulose fibres instead of more traditional fillers weight can be reduced by five to 15% and the plastic becomes partly bio-based. 27

Sappi Stories Supporting the bio-based economy intelligently 28

The danger of wasting wood Sappi and the forest products industry as a whole make use of considerable quantities of renewable raw materials to produce pulp and paper. Rather than competing with energy producers for a certain share of the wood that is sustainably available, we want to promote a more intelligent use of our raw materials. We use pulpwood directly sourced from forests, and wood chips, to make paper. The quality of these forestry by-products is not highenough for use by other wood users. As a result we play a very important role in the forest product value chain. Why waste wood by burning it directly to make energy, when you can make renewable energy from wood-based products like paper? Concretely, pulpwood is used 2.4 times when used as paper, and only once when used to make energy. The pulp and paper industry creates seven jobs for every one created by the biomass energy industry, and is worth five times the value. 29

Sappi Stories Two Sides and Sappi 30

Print and paper have a great environmental story to tell Sappi is a founding member of Two Sides, a leading international organisation committed to promoting the sustainability and attractiveness of print media, and to highlighting the responsible production and use of print and paper ( Electronic communication is more environmentally friendly than Print and Paper and Planted forests are bad for the environment. Did you know for instance that European forests are growing by an area of 1.5 million football pitches every year? Print Power is one of Two Sides European campaigns. It promotes the use and effectiveness of print media in a multi-channel market to media and marketing professionals across Europe ( A copy of this brochure is available on Together, Sappi and Two Sides produce Print and Paper Myths and Facts, a brochure which challenges the many misconceptions about the sustainability of print media e.g. 31

Sappi Stories The Treehouse 32

The Treehouse Located in Bosland, the largest forest in Flanders, Belgium, the Treehouse is the result of a joint vision and partnership between Sappi Europe, ANB (the Agency for Nature and Forests), the Belgian Municipality of Hechtel-Eksel, and communication agency Proximity BBDO. Open-minded companies from different sectors can meet at the Treehouse to brainstorm, generate ideas, and put them into action. The Treehouse is a platform, both physical and virtual, for like-minded individuals and companies to come together to find ways to embrace sustainability in their daily activities. The unique space in the tree tops, designed structurally in the form of an open book, provides the blank canvas, and the environmental inspiration to drive, and share, sustainable thinking. 33

Sappi Stories All dressed up 34

Isabelle de Borchgrave, All dressed up This gorgeous creation would be remarkable enough if it was made out of cloth and thread. But Belgian designer Isabelle de Borchgrave, who is renowned for making dresses out of paper, has made this sumptuous gown out of Sappi paper. It was displayed at the Fachpack fair in September Weighing 15kg, the dress comprised 280 packages in crinoline and 320 teabags in the delicate bustier alone. To keep the paper a pristine white, its creators had to wash their hands every 15 minutes while working on it.
