The Aztecs, who are making their sixth regional appearance in the last seven years and 13th overall, will be among the field vying for a spot in the NCAA national championship series, scheduled for May in Eugene, Ore. SDSU garnered the sixth seed out of 18 teams in the Stanford Regional, earning one of 43 at-large bids to the NCAA tournament after finishing second at the Mountain West Championship on April 20. A total of 72 NCAA Division I schools received invitations to play in one of four regionals that will be held concurrently this week in Bryan, Texas, (Texas A&M), Baton Rouge, La. (LSU), Shoal Creek, Ala. (Alabama) and Stanford, Calif. (Stanford). Joining the Aztecs this week will be 17 other teams, including 12 opponents ranked in the top 50, along with six individual competitors (96 golfers overall). The top six squads and the three highest finishing individuals not on an advancing team will move on to nationals from each of the four regionals. Teams will complete 18 holes (54 total) of stroke play each of the three days following a practice round on Wednesday, May 4. SDSU will tee off with Virginia and UNLV for Thursday s opening round, which is set to get underway at 7:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 1, while pairings for Friday and Saturday will be based on team scores. Low 54 Best Finish Emma Henrikson st Sirene Blair th Mila Chaves rd Haleigh Krause st Georgia Lacey th Aztec Lineup For This Week Fifth-year San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding will accompany five players to The Farm this week, featuring 2016 Mountain West Women s Golfer of the Year Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) and second-team all-conference honoree Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), along with Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) and Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) Henrikson will be making her fourth consecutive appearance in regional competition, while Blair finds herself in the thick of the fight for the third straight season. In addition, Chaves and Lacey will be competing in the regional tournament for the second year in a row, joining Krause, a first-time participant. Henrikson, an All-America candidate who owns a team-best stroke average for the season, is ranked 11th nationally according to Golfstat and occupies the 17th spot in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Henrikson and Blair are the lone veterans from the Aztecs last visit to Stanford Golf Course in February 2014, when the Scarlet and Black finished seventh out of 14 squads at the Peg Barnard Invitational. Henrikson tied for 17th individually with a 7-over 149 at the 36-hole tournament, while Blair finished one shot behind in the 21st position at 8-over 150. SDSU At NCAA Regionals The Aztecs are making their sixth trip to NCAA regionals in the last seven years and ninth overall as a team. SDSU earned team bids in 1999 (18th), 2001 (15th), 2004 (15th), 2010 (t-15th), 2011 (17th), 2012 (t-20th), 2014 (t-21st) and 2015 (11th). The program has also been represented by individual golfers in 1996, 1997, 2000 and This week marks the sixth time the Aztecs are participating in a western-based regional as a team, following the 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014 and 2015 squads. SDSU competed at Stanford Golf Course in regional play on one previous occasion in 2004, finishing 15th out of 21 schools. The Scarlet and Black also participated in the East Regional two times in 2001 and 2012 to go with an appearance at the Central Regional in Including this season, the program will have played in 12 different cities and 10 different states in its NCAA regional history. Heather MacRae boasts SDSU s best individual finish when she tied for 11th place at Stanford in 2004; Malin Enarsson is second with her 12th-place performance in 2010, while Hiroko Fukushima sits in third with an 18th-place effort in In addition, Paige Spiranac tied for the 19th spot in 2013, while Mila Chaves landed in the 20th position a year ago. The Competition The Aztecs are one of 13 teams in the Stanford Regional ranked among the top 50 in the latest Golfstat rankings released April 26. Of those squads, six reside in the top 25, including No. 2 USC, followed by Arkansas (7), Stanford (12), Virginia (15), UNLV (18) and SDSU (22). SDSU has also maintained the upper hand this year against Pepperdine (4-1) and has topped Colorado (1-1), Ohio State (1-2) and Stanford (1-2) once each. A Look At The Course The host site of the 2016 NCAA Stanford Regional is the par-71, 6,269-yard Stanford Golf Course, located in the rolling hills above Stanford University. Designed in 1930 by renowned architects William Bell and George C. Thomas, the course is consistently rated as one of the finest in the nation. In 2009, Stanford Golf Course was selected as the third-best collegiate track in the U.S. following a Golf Channel survey of 160 coaches and was ranked fifth-best in the country according to Golfweek in Throughout the years, Stanford Golf Course has played host to numerous amateur and professional events, including U.S. Open qualifying, U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying, NCAA Women s Championships, NCAA Regionals, as well as a former Senior PGA Tour event, The Gathering at The Farm. The Aztecs last played at Stanford in February 2014, where it placed seventh out of 14 teams at the 36-hole Peg Barnard Invitational. In addition, SDSU competed in the Stanford Intercollegiate in October 2011, finishing 12th out of 15 squads in head coach Leslie Spalding s first season on Montezuma Mesa. Backspin: 2015 St. George Regional The San Diego State women s golf team saw its season come to an end after completing the final round of the 2015 NCAA St. George Regional in 11th place at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah. The Aztecs climbed five spots from the previous day after posting the fourth-best score of 18 schools in the final round with a 7-over-par 291, finishing the tournament at 64-over 916. With its result, SDSU recorded its highest team placement in eight regional appearances. All five Aztec players logged their best single-round scores of the week, including Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), who set a program record for lowest 18-hole total in regional competition with a 2-under 69. The SDSU freshman finished strong, posting six pars and three of her four birdies of the day on the back nine, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 386-yard No. 4, which ranked as the fourth-toughest hole of the final round. With her performance, Chaves vaulted 22 places into a tie for 20th with a combined 11-over-224. In addition, fellow classmate Georgia Lacey made a sizeable move up the individual leaderboard, jumping 19 spots into a tie for 58th at 19-over 232. Despite the lack of birdies on her scorecard, the Torrey Pines High alumna was a model of consistency, carding 17 pars against only one bogey en route to a final-round 72. Likewise, Sirene Blair landed in the 58th position after shooting a 76 over the final 18 holes. The Aztec sophomore also found birdies scarce, but still finished with 14 pars for the day. However, Blair was unable to avoid a stumble of six places after three bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-4, 383-yard No. 6 sandbagged her round. Similarly, Paige Spiranac slipped five spots into a tie for 63rd at 20-over 233 after shooting a 76 in her final collegiate tournament. The SDSU senior captain made birdie on her fifth-to-last hole of the day, the par-3, 137-yard No. 5; however, six bogeys, including four on the front nine, proved too much to overcome. Rounding out the Aztec contingency was Emma Henrikson, who regrouped with a 74 after posting an atypical 81 during the second round. Despite a double-bogey on her finishing hole, the par-5, 541-

USC (+28) claimed the St. George Regional title by six strokes over Stanford (+34) as the top six schools advanced to the NCAA Championships in Bradenton, Fla. Joining the Women of Troy and the Cardinal were Arkansas, UNLV, Virginia and California, along with individuals Alivia Brown of Washington State and Florida International s Meghan McLaren. Dana Finkelstein of UNLV (-2) shot a final-round 67 to capture medalist honors by three strokes over Arkansas Alana Uriell and Gaby Lopez, both of whom tied for the runner-up spot at 3-over for the tournament. Henrikson Named MW Women s Golfer of the Year Emma Henrikson was named Mountain West Women s Golfer of the Year in a vote of the league s nine head coaches following the final round of the conference championship on April 20. In addition, the San Diego State senior earned first-team all-mw honors, while fellow Aztec Sirene Blair was a second-team selection. With her award, Henrikson becomes just the second SDSU competitor ever to earn top player honors from the MW after Christine Wong received the same recognition in Henrikson is ranked 11th in the nation according to Golfstat and 17th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. The Aztec senior leads the league with a team-best scoring average and tops the squad with 11 rounds below par, including nine in the 60s. Henrikson has recorded six top-10 individual placements this year, highlighted by two medal-winning performances at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 23 and the Westbrook Spring Invitational on Feb. 22. She also logged two third-place finishes at the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational during the fall schedule and last month at the Bruin Wave Invitational. For her efforts, Henrikson earned MW Women s Golfer of the Month for September to go along with conference Player of the Week distinction on March 2. Blair, meanwhile, posted her highest finish in three MW Championship appearances where she landed alone in the fifth spot at 5-over par 221, highlighted by a final-round 69 to help SDSU to a runner-up standing. The Aztec junior also tied for fourth at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and was the team s top competitor at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in late October where she established a program record for lowest 54-hole score with an 11-under 205 en route to another fifth-place effort. For the season, Blair ranks seventh in the league with a stroke average and is second on the squad with seven rounds below par. At the aforementioned Las Vegas Showdown, she matched her career-best with a 5-under 67 in the opening round. The selections of Henrikson and Blair give the Scarlet and Black multiple all-conference honorees for the sixth year in a row. In addition, Henrikson becomes just the second SDSU player to earn all-mw distinction in four consecutive seasons, along with Wong, while Blair picked up her third straight all-conference certificate. Previously, Henrikson and Blair were MW Freshman of the Year award winners in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Rewind: Aztecs Finish Second at MW Championship San Diego State team fell short in its quest for a second straight conference title after finishing second at the 2016 Mountain West Championship on the par-72, 6,291-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club on April 20. Despite posting the lowest score of any team in the three-day event with a 2-under-par 286, the Aztecs managed to climb just one spot in the standings, completing the championship with a 54-hole total of 24-over 886. UNLV (+13) took the ceremonial plunge into Poppie s Pond this year after carding an even-par 288 during the final round to win by nine strokes, while Fresno State (+33) slipped into third behind SDSU, followed by San José State (+42) and New Mexico (+50). For the second straight season and just the third time since the league s inception, the Aztecs had two players finish among the top five individually at the MW Championship. Sophomore Mila Chaves climbed into the third spot at 2-over 218, while junior Sirene Blair vaulted into the fifth position with a combined 5-over 221 after each fired a 69. Chaves was one of just two golfers, along with UNLV s Mackenzie Raim, to complete the final round without a blemish on her scorecard, notching 15 pars and three birdies to jump four places on the leaderboard en route to her second-lowest 18-hole tally of the season. Blair, meanwhile, sank a team-leading six birdies, including three straight on holes 7-9, to catapult 10 places from the previous round. Despite two bogeys on the back nine, the Utah native still managed her highest finish in three MW Championship appearances. Not to be outdone, Emma Henrikson also displayed upward mobility, jumping eight spots into a tie for seventh at 7-over 223. Along with Chaves and Blair, Henrikson was one of just six golfers in the field of 45 competitors to break par during the final round after shooting a 71. Despite a dearth of birdies on her card, the SDSU senior offset one bogey with the just the second eagle of the tournament on the par-5, 482-yard No. 2. Conversely, Georgia Lacey was not as fortunate, tumbling 13 places into 16th with a final-round 80, which did not count toward the Aztecs final team score. The SDSU sophomore, who entered the day in a tie for third, was unable to recover from three bogeys and two doubles on the front nine, ultimately completing the tournament at 11-over 227. Fellow classmate Haleigh Krause was also unable to advance up the ladder, slipping one notch into a tie for 30th at 16-over 233 on the heels of her second straight 77. Despite two birdies before, Krause was plagued by seven bogeys, including a pair on her final two greens. UNLV s Alexandra Kaui, who was the lone competitor to finish the week in red figures at 4-under 212, captured medalist honors after shooting final-round 69, topping runner-up Katrina Prendergast of Colorado State (+1) by five strokes Highlights Despite a roster with just one senior and a schedule brimming with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another banner season in , posting top-10 team finishes in six of seven stroke-play tournaments, highlighted by a pair of team titles during the fall slate. Buoyed by Emma Henrikson s superlative performance, the Aztecs captured both the team and individual crowns at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, held Sept in Wolcott, Colo. The SDSU senior collected medalist honors with a tournament-record 10-under-par 206, while Sirene Blair (+2) tied for fourth, followed by Haleigh Krause (+4), who landed in the eighth position. Coupled with her impressive Colorado finish and a third-place tie earlier at the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Henrikson was named Mountain West Women s Golfer of the Month for September. SDSU kept the momentum rolling in its next tournament, rallying for a spirited five-shot victory over California at the University of Washington s Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in suburban Seattle. The Aztecs found themselves trailing by 10 strokes at the start of the final round, before surging past the Golden Bears on the back nine despite a steady rain. Mila Chaves was the Scarlet and Black s top finisher, tying for fifth on the individual leaderboard at 5-over 221, while Georgia Lacey (+9) wound up in the ninth spot. With its second straight team title secured, SDSU was ranked as high as 13th nationally by Golfweek in late October. In addition, the Aztecs collected two tournament crowns in the same season for the second year in a row, but just the third time since the campaign. SDSU wrapped up its fall schedule with a solid third-place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in late October. Under ideal playing conditions, the Aztecs set a team record with a collective 30-under 834, while Blair established an individual 54-hole standard after carding an 11-under 205. SDSU opened its second semester slate in late February at the University of Wisconsin s Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., where Henrikson notched her second victory of the year and third as a collegian after tying the host Badgers Brooke Terrell for medalist honors with a 5-under 211. Henrikson continued her remarkable campaign a week later at the Bruin Wave Invitational, finishing a solo third at 1-under 215 to lift the Scarlet and Black to a fourth-place tie in the team standings. With her two previous results, Henrikson received MW Women s Golfer of the Week honors. After a three-week hiatus, the Aztecs conducted their fourth annual home tournament under a new name, the SDSU March Mayhem, which featured a match-play format for the second year in a row. In a stacked field that included 10 top-40 schools, San Diego State finished a respectable fifth with a 3-1 record. The Aztecs emerged triumphant with exciting wins over TCU, Kansas and Arizona State, but came up short against eventual third-place finisher UCLA in the second round. Just A Chip Shot Away The top six teams and the three highest finishing individuals not on one of those squads will advance out of the NCAA Stanford Regional to the national championships, slated for May in Eugene, Ore. A total of 24 teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play over a three-day period at Eugene Country Club, with the top 15 squads and nine highest placing individuals advancing to a fourth round of stroke play, which will determine the top eight schools for match play competition, as well as the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play. SDSU has previously sent an individual to the NCAA national tournament, but has never qualified as a team.
