2 PREFACE The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has grown in leaps and bounds and with the growth has also come the complex and daunting task of maintaining it. One of the challenges of University education in Nigeria today, which ABU is part of, is how to maintain standards and continue to achieve excellence. A University that is true to its ideals as envisioned by its founding father, Sir, Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, should be up and doing in the provision of necessary information on its activities for the benefit of both its staff and students as well as the general public. This University Calendar, coming after several years of lull, is one of the strides of the current administration and its commitment to return the ABU to its glorious past. It presents the current picture and profile of the Ahmadu Bello University. It also conveys its vision and strategic direction as well as capturing both the academic and non-academic activities that have made it the great institution that it is and will continue to be. With the calendar, we serve notice to the world that ABU is not only witnessing a significant turn around, but that it is also embarking on the path of progress that defines it as the greatest and largest University south of the Sahara and north of the Limpopo. 3 CHARTER The cardinal principle upon which our University is founded is to impart knowledge and learning to men and women of all races without any distinction on the grounds of race, religious, or political beliefs. This principle is enshrined in the University Law. Only through freedom of membership and freedom of enquiry and research can a University be drawn into the full ferment of thought from which new knowledge comes. Only if it adheres to those freedoms can it become truly great. If our staff and students are drawn from all parts of the world, then the mixture of international minds working together in an atmosphere of academic freedom can produce a University true to its ideal and meanings. our character must reflect the needs, the traditions, the social and intellectual heritage of the land in which we live. Inevitably in a country developing as fast as ours, we must call on outside help. That we have received in generous measure. But in seeking help from outside it is not our intention to copy a standard pattern of University from the United Kingdom, from the Commonwealth, or from the United States of America. We must develop our own pattern to suit our present background and our needs. Our University must grow out of our own soil. We shall be truly Nigerian institution and not the mirror image of some alien body. 4 FOREWORD By and large, there is no doubt in the fact that the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has continued to grow steadily over the years especially in terms of introduction of new academic programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, professional programmes at certificate and postgraduate levels as well as creation of new departments to cope with the challenges of the day without compromise to set national and international standards. As at 2011, there 12 Faculties, a School of Postgraduate Studies, 95 academic Departments, 6 institutes and 6 Centres. To this effect, it becomes necessary and expedient to have a handy reference document on Ahmadu Bello University containing vital information that is needed to be known about the University ranging from administrative structures and functions, academic programmes and courses as well as other vital activities of the University for easy access and utilization by all and sundry at convenience. It is pleasing to note that the ABU Calendar which has gone into comatose for over a decade is out again with vital information on the contemporary issues on the University. 14 VISION Ahmadu Bello University shall be a world-class centre of learning and research that is responsive to the needs of its immediate community, Nigeria and the world at large. MISSION To advance the frontiers of learning and break new grounds, through teaching, research and the dissemination of knowledge of the highest quality; establish and foster national and international integration; develop and promote African traditions and cultures; produce high-level human power and enhance capacity-building through training and retraining, in order to meet the needs and challenges of the catchment area, Nigeria and the rest of the world. PHILOSOPHY At the convocation ceremony of the University in 1963, the founding father and mentor of the University, Sir Ahmadu Bello enunciated the philosophy of A.B.U when he said: The first duty of every university is the search for and the spread of knowledge and the establishment of the nation." The philosophy of the Ahmadu Bello University is predicated upon the cardinal principle of imparting knowledge and learning to men and women of all races without any distinction on the grounds of race, religious or political beliefs, etc. Hence the objectives of ABU as articulated in Article 4 of its 1962 and 1975 law are: (a) (b) (c) to provide regular and liberal courses of instruction in the humanities, sciences and other spheres of learning of a standard required and expected of University of the Highest standing; to promote research and the advancement of science and learning: to secure the diffusion of Knowledge throughout Nigeria. GOALS OF THE UNIVERSITY 1. To be an academic centre of excellence in teaching, learning and research through the provision of the high quality learning resources and relevant curriculum. 2. To be a leader in cutting edge research through the provision of ultra-modern multi-user specialized laboratories and information resources. 3. To be a renowned and celebrated academic institution through computerization, multi-media communication and linkage programmes. 4. To have the best learning and research environment for academic work through the rehabilitation, upgrading and expansion of infrastructural, municipal, sporting, health and welfare facilities. 5. To be build a formidable resource base by enhancing the University s income generation through revenue sourcing and collection, alumni and advancement development. 6. 15 HISTORICAL NOTE There shall be in Northern Nigeria a University to be known as the Ahmadu Bello University, the Authorities of which are hereby constituted a body Corporate which shall have perpetual succession and common seal. The Ahmadu Bello University, whose Law was enacted on 14 th October, 1962, has its origins in the defunct Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, founded in 1955; the Clerical Training Centre, Kongo, founded 1957; the Samaru Agricultural Research Station established in 1924, and the Shika Stock Farm started in A month before independence in October 1960, the Ashby Commission on Post-School Certificate and Higher Education appointed by the Federal Government in 1959 recommended that a University should be created in Zaria to serve the then Northern Region of Nigeria. The Northern Region Government requested the British Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, to send a delegation from the Inter- University Council to plan a University for Northern Nigeria. The delegation, headed by Sir Alexander Carr-Saunders, arrived in April 1961 and in the same month issued its recommendations on the scope and activities of the University. In April 1961, a Law establishing a Provisional Council of the University of Northern Nigeria was passed by the Legislature of Northern Nigeria, and the Provisional Council was established in November 1961 under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Shettima Kashim, CBE, now Sir Kashim Ibrahim KCMG, CBE (a member of the Ashby Commission who later became Governor of Northern Nigeria and Visitor to the University). Sir Norman Stanley Alexander, a New Zealander, and Professor of Physics at the then University College, Ibadan was appointed the First Principal (later Vice-Chancellor) in July 1961, and assumed office in November. The University was named after Sir Ahmadu Bello ( ), Sardauna Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, who, as the first Chancellor of the University, performed the Opening Ceremony on October 4, The University opened with just four Faculties Agriculture, Engineering, Law and Science fifteen Departments and 426 students. Under the successive Vice-Chancellorships of Professor Norman Alexander , Professor Ishaya Audu , Professor Iya Abubakar , Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe , Professor Ango Abdullahi , Professor Nayaya Mohammed , Professor Daniel Saror , Major General Mamman Kontagora (rtd) as Sole Administrator , Professor Abdullahi Mahadi , Professor Shehu Usman Abdullahi, and the current Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdullahi Mustapha from 2010 to date, Ahmadu Bello University increased its size, scope and depth of its academic work. By a Decree (the Ahmadu Bello University (Transition) Provisions Decree of 1975) the University was taken over by the then Federal Military Government, and now enjoys the status of a Federal University. By 1987, the year in which the University celebrated its 25 th Anniversary year, ABU has turned out to be the largest and the most extensive of all Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa; covering a land area of about 7000 hectares. Today, ABU has twelve academic faculties, a Postgraduate School and 84 academic departments. It also has five Institutes, six specialized centers, a Division of Agricultural Colleges, a Demonstration Secondary School, a Primary School and Extension and Consultancy Services, which provide a variety of services to the University and the wider society. The total students' enrolment in the University's degree and sub-degree programs is about 35,000, drawn from every state of the Federation, Africa and the rest of the world. xv

16 There University has 1,780 academic and research staff and 4,549 Administrative and Technical staff. Ahmadu Bello University has nurtured two Universities: Bayero University, Kano and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University of Technology, Bauchi. While 30 tertiary Institutions made up of Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and Schools of Basic Preliminary Studies are affiliated to it. Within the 49 years of existence, the University had to a great extent, met the development needs for which it was founded, especially with regards to the production of high-quality graduates and Community Service in Engineering, Environmental Design, the Medical Sciences, Agriculture, the Humanities, Education and the Natural Sciences. The University's five hundred thousand alumni are found in all parts of Nigeria, Niger Republic, the Cameroon, South Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States. Its products occupy important positions in the public and the private sectors of the economy, at all levels of government, and in educational Institutions of higher learning in and outside Nigeria. xvi
