1 CURRICULUM VITAE CAROLINA DALMASSO Department of Physiology & Biophysics - Women's Health Research Center University of Mississippi Medical Center 2500 N. State St. Jackson, MS cdalmasso@umc.edu RESEARCH EXPERIENCE My research interest was focused on understanding the physiological mechanisms by which gonadal steroids modulate the renin-angiotensin system, as well as the neuroendocrine basis of regulatory behaviors controlling body fluid homeostasis. A comprehensive understanding of these mechanisms in both females and males is fundamental to elucidate key pathophysiological aspects related to cardiovascular diseases such us hypertension, as well as gender differences in the regulation of several systems. My graduate work with Dr. Laura Vivas concerned the study of estrogenic modulation of body fluid homeostasis. In this work I demonstrated the involvement of the serotonergic system as a possible mechanism in the inhibitory action of estrogen on induced sodium intake in female rats. The hormonal status during the estrous cycle and estradiol replacement after ovariectomy changed the neural activity induced by sodium depletion in cells of specialized neural structures (i.e., circumventricular organs and serotonergic cells of the dorsal raphe nucleus). These changes correlated with the decrease in sodium intake observed during high estrogen concentration stages. In addition, I showed that estrogen influences the vasopressinergic neural activity and the associated diuresis after fluid depletion. Another key aspect of my work was a study of the estrogenic modulation of the brain renin-angiotensin system after fluid depletion. In this regard, I found an additional mechanism by which estrogen inhibits sodium appetite through a decreased activation of the central mechanisms of induction of thirst, triggered by the activation of renin-angiotensin system. I found that estrogen decreases the angiotensin AT 1 receptors in brain areas involved in fluid balance regulation. EDUCATION 2012 Ph.D. in Biological Sciences.
