Admission to the Schools listed below is subject to the results a competitive examination for qualified candidates. Each information sheet contains the number of available grants, the participation modalities, in addition to when and where the public examinations will take place. All the grants funded under the 2007/2013 Obiettivo Competitività Regionale e Occupazione, Asse IV Capitale Umano, Linea di Attività I.3.1 funding scheme are intended for the training and education of highly specialized HR units, in particular in the following fields of expertise: ICT, nanotechnologies and biotechnologies, sustainable development and energy sources, farming and food, and traditional materials. They are intended ONLY for those candidates who meet the requirements specified by art. 2 of this call, based on a ranking list, who are currently residing in Sardinia or whose parents have resided in Sardinia for at least five years or whose parents are Sardinian emigrants. 2

Its objectives include the analysis of the connection between the Law and the Economics of productive systems in the framework of market control, and to provide a comprehensive outline of modern entrepreneurial approaches. Through its research projects, seminars and conferences, the School seeks to train professionals in this particular field; in particular, it seeks to train future research associates and academic staff to be employed by our Faculty. Our training programmes are intended for professionals who wish to apply for competitive examinations for research posts and, possibly, higher academic positions. Nonetheless, our training and educational programmes are not limited to the public sector, but they provide a sound grounding for those who wish to work as consultants in the private sector, In addition, we seek to train future lawyers, solicitors and accountants, both in the public and the private sector, and in view of changes occurred in the administrative and managerial sector. The Research Graduate School in Law and Economics of the Productive Systems includes two main subject areas: Law and Economics, both including different curricula. Law includes: Legal systems and institutional innovation; Management and protection of environmental resources; Aviation and Airspace; Armed Conflict and Peacekeeping operation; Transport and territorial continuity; Municipalities, globalisation and regionalisms; Trade and Economics. Its aim is to train high-quality research staff to be employed by research institutions, both in the public and in the private sectors. Our prospectus and research activities focus on a wide range of subject areas and methodologies in relation to theoretical and applied research in biomedical sciences. In addition to the general aims and objectives of the School, each subject area provides specific training and research skills. 9 INTERNATIONAL PhD SCHOOL IN Biomolecular and Biotechnological Sciences Contact: Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiologiche Biochimiche e Cellulari Via Muroni, 25 School Director: Prof. Bruno Masala - tel e.mail: [email protected] Objectives The International PhD School in Biomolecular and Biotechnological Sciences provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge to conduct high quality research in the complex, multidisciplinary, fast-growing field of biological events and their molecular bases, in all their aspects and applications. PhD graduates at in the School will be ready to work in several fields such as: biochemistry, clinical biochemistry, molecular biology, space biology, microbiology and immunology, human and animal virology, specialised branches of human and veterinary molecular medicine, environmental protection etc. By bringing together different resources and expertise, the School provides students with a sound educational basis, a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary international approach, thanks to the collaboration of 60 teaching staff units, in particular: 38 professors and researchers of the University of, 2 lecturers fro the National Research Council and 20 foreign professors coming from Canada, UK, Spain, Switzerland, USA, and Vietnam. Indeed, the awareness that Life, in all its facets, is proven to have a molecular basis, results in the teaching of all common technical and methodological approaches implemented in its study and analysis. The need for both basic and advanced multidisciplinary expertise operators of several research and production sectors give reasons for the development of 3 complex curricula: 1. Biochemistry, Physiology and Molecular Biology. 2. Microbiology and Immunology. 3. Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Proteomics. 15 RESEARCH GRADUATE SCHOOL Science and Biotechnology of Agricultural Systems, Forestry and Food production Contact details: Dipartimento di Economia e Sistemi Arborei - Via Enrico de Nicola School Director: Prof. Giuseppe Pulina- tel +39/ [email protected] Aims and Objectives Our Doctoral research programme aims to train PhD students wishing to obtain a high qualification and adequate research skills in the following areas: land meteorology and ecophysiology; management and protection of agricultural and forestry production systems and the conservation, protection and exploitation of natural resources; production of general and applied microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, enzymology, immunology, fermentation chemistry, process engineering and the connection of the above with the production at the regional, national and international levels (research and development, processing problems, marketing, etc..) techniques of breeding and animal husbandry, feeding and nutrition, applied genetics and selection, through molecular biology techniques, of quality and product safety; crops productivity. During the three-year course, our doctoral students will acquire the knowledge of the experimental scientific method and related expertise in the preparation of experimental designs, in mathematical and statistical processing of data, in statistical and experimental inference, in the dissemination of research results as well as the ability to provide plans and conduct experimental and analytical laboratory activities. 22 ART. 2 Minimum admission requirements Research Graduate School applications must include all required details for the subject chosen. All candidates are required to be in possession of a valid Masters Degree certificate or an equivalent academic degree (validity requisites are specified in M.D. no. 509 of 3 November 1999, and M.D. no. 207 of 22 October 2004). Pre-reform First class Honour Degrees (i.e. obtained prior to the M.D. no. 509 of 3 November 1999) and Degree certificates from foreign academic institutions are also valid. POR FSE 2007/2013 grant beneficiaries must comply with the following specifications: being a Sardinian resident, or son/daughter of parents who have resided in Sardinia for at least five years, or son/daughter of Sardinian emigrants. For admission purposes, foreign citizens, whose qualifications are yet to be validated, shall formally request validation to the School Council when submitting their application form. In order to expedite validation procedures, candidates shall submit all documents issued by foreign institutions according to the Italian national requirements: any original document written in a language other than Italian must be translated into Italian and stamped by the Italian consulate or diplomatic authority based in the candidate s country of origin or residence, in compliance with current Italian regulations on foreign student admission to Italian universities. Enrolment in the afore-mentioned Graduate Schools is incompatible with enrolment in other university courses, such as BA s, Master s degrees of PhD Schools, managed by this or other Universities. As of art. 19, par. 1, lett. c of Law No 240/2010, joint attendance to both the Graduate School and the Post-graduate school is permitted for students attending medicine-related courses only. In case of joint attendance, graduate schools will last a minimum of two years. Any fee-related provision is described in art. 14 of this Call ( Fees ) Research grant beneficiaries who apply for it may be admitted to the School, with self-funded grants, as long as they successfully pass the entrance test. The relevant quota is limited to a 30% share of available grants. All interested students may submit their application forms by filling the form attached to this call, in all its parts. In order to be granted access to the comparative examination, candidates must have graduated before the deadline of this call. ART. 3 Grants for foreign students Each Graduate School may assign a single grant to one of those foreign students who successfully pass the examination, under art. 5 provisions. If no foreign student is regarded as eligible, the grant shall not be assigned and will be withdrawn by the University. Foreign candidates (both EU and non-eu) who wish to apply for the foreign student grant selection procedure are required to explicitly request for it when they submit their application form. ART. 4 Non-EU students Non-EU students who explicitly apply for the comparative competition will be granted access to the Schools, according to the subject area chosen, the availability of self-funded or additional grants, up to a maximum of 50% of the total number of grants available, rounded down to the nearest unit. The Board of Examiners will be in charge of said procedure and will officially announce its decision after due curricula evaluation. ART. 5 Application procedure The attached application form (Anx.1) must be filled in and sent to the attention of the Magnifico Rettore dell Università degli Studi di, by registered mail with delivery notice, to the following address: Università degli Studi di, Piazza Università 21, Italy or by hand to the Ufficio Protocollo, Piazza Università 21, Italy by Date as postmark will NOT suffice. ART. 6 Exams Admission to the courses of the Research Graduate Schools is subject to the candidate s submission of a research project proposal, reporting the aim of the investigation and the work plan. Selections are also subject to the successful completion of written examination, followed by an oral exam (viva). The procedure aims to assess candidates research skills, as well as their proficiency in one or more foreign languages. 23

24 Written papers may be submitted in Italian, English or any other EU language as indicated by the Board of Examiners. Details on the written exam and the oral exam (if the written exam is passed), including where and when they will take place, is indicated by each School in their information sheets. Therefore no additional written communication, other than this call, will be provided to applicants. A valid ID is necessary to be granted access to the exam premises. Final results, reporting the individual marks awarded for each of the examinations and the certification assessment, will be published on the following website: ART. 7 Board of the Examiners Members of the Board of Examiners for admission to doctoral research courses the University of are appointed in compliance with the general Rules and Regulations of Academic Doctoral Research. The board, consisting of several specific panels, may award 20 points for certifications and 50 points for each of the examinations. The certification points will be divided as follows: - First class Honours Degree = up to 5 credits; - Thesis/dissertation relevance to the proposed research project/topic = up to 5 credits; - Relevant publications = up to 5 credits - Certified and relevant work/research experience The board will evaluate certifications, such as degree certificates or other type of educational certifications, according to research-related national regulations, based on and limited to their consistency with the specific subject areas and requirements of this call. Access to oral exams is granted to candidates who will have successfully passed the written exam, with a mark equal to or higher than 30/50. The oral exam is regarded as successfully passes if the candidate is awarded a mark equal to or higher than 30/50. At the end of each oral exam session, the board of examiners will draw up a list of candidates, reporting their individual marks obtained by the candidates. The list will be signed by the Board Chairperson and the Secretary and displayed on the same day on the notice board of the Department where the exam is carried out. Upon completion of the exams, the board will publish the general pass-list (according to merit) reporting the sum of the marks awarded to each candidate in each exam and within the certificate evaluation procedure. Eligible candidates are granted admission to the courses on the basis of their rank in the pass-list and of the number of grants available for each School. Non- or tardy official acceptance by the candidates will result in the following candidate on the list being granted access in the withdrawing candidate s stead, unless one month from the beginning of the course has elapsed. If no candidates are eligible for one or more subject areas, the board will submit the matter to the School Council, for a reallocation of available grants among the other active subject areas. ART. 8 Evaluation procedure for foreign student grants If a School includes more than one subject area, the Board of Examiners and the subject-area panels may award up to 120 points for the qualifications submitted by foreign candidates who apply to foreign student grants. These 120 points may be allocated as follows: Certification consistency with the School s subject areas: up to 20 points; Bearing of the candidate s thesis on the School s research topics: up to 20 points; Bearing of the candidate s publications on the School s research topic: up to 20 points; Paper to be submitted as mentioned in the call: up to 20 points. 24

25 ART. 9 Admission Eligible candidates will be accepted by the School according to their rank in the pass-list, until the maximum number of participants is reached. All grants will be assigned according to the provisions of this call, as specified of each School information sheet. If a candidate does not comply wit the grant requirements, the following candidate in the pass-list will be considered for the grant, as indicated in the previous article. The foreign student grants will be assigned to the eligible candidate with the highest score within the pass-list. Non- or tardy acceptance to attend the School will result in the following candidate on the list being granted access in the withdrawing candidate s stead, unless one month from the beginning of the course has elapsed. Extra eligible candidates may be allowed to attend the School, as long as they passed all the examinations. ART. 10 Application procedure Examination results are published online (see Selected candidates who wish to benefit from a research grant must submit all required documentation within 6 working days from the publication date of the final ranking list. Noncompliance will result in the candidate s exclusion from the list. ART. 11 Attendance All candidates are expected to attend and participate in the School s activities as specified in the requirements for attendance of each Doctoral School. At the end of each academic year, students will submit a detailed report of the research work carried out until that stage. Annual reports are assessed by a Board of Examiners who takes record of students progress, thereby advising the Rector as to their prospective status. Unsatisfactory quality of research work may result in the student s failure to continue his/her course of study. The title of Dottore di Ricerca (PhD), with details of the subject area, is awarded to candidates who complete the course and achieve satisfactory research goals. Awards are subject to the submission of a doctoral thesis and its assessment by a specifically appointed Board of Examiners. ART. 12 Release or withdrawal Candidates who fail to submit all relevant documentation by the afore-mentioned deadline (see art. 10) will not be admitted to the Schools. False statements are punished in accordance with current applicable regulations. Those who are found guilty of false statements will be refused admission to the Research Graduate School, and their place will be offered to the following eligible student whose name appear on the final ranking list. 25

26 If no candidate is eligible for one or more subject areas, or in case of release or withdrawal, the School Council will allocate vacant positions to applicants for other subject areas, if applicable. ART. 13 Grants Grants will be awarded according to the modalities and quantities described in each School information sheet, in compliance with art. 1, based on the results of the public examination and the ranking lists of each subject area, issued by the Boards of Examiners. The amount of each grant will be defined under art. 1 par. 1, lett. A of Law no. 315 of 03/08/1998 and following modifications. Score being equal, two or more candidates will be evaluated according to current national regulations. Foreign student grants, if and when unassigned, will be reallocated by the University. If additional grant funds are available, granted by public or private institutions, the University will allocate them, upon the School Council s recommendations, before the examination sessions start, by publishing such reallocation on the University s official website and during the examinations. Grants cover the whole duration of the course. At the end of each academic year, funding is confirmed, unless otherwise specified by the Council of in case of non-compliance which may impair their validity. Students may receive one grant only, with the exception of extra funding by national and international bodies which can be used for research activities in a foreign country. Candidates who carry out their research work in a foreign country may receive an additional 50% of the total amount of their grant, if funds are available. Research activities in a country other than Italy may take up to half the entire duration of the doctoral course. Students who wish to carry out research work abroad must formally submit their request for validation to the Rector s office, duly signed and authorized by the School director for a maximum number of six months, and by the School Council for longer periods. The grant will be paid every two months at the latest. Payment is subject to approval by the Course Director and the Head of School on the basis of the candidates progress, and should be notified by the 10th day of each calendar month. In case of delays, candidates will receive their monthly instalment along with the following month s payment. Beneficiaries may only benefit from a single grant. UNISS-funded grant beneficiaries will not be charged enrolment fees, which will be covered by the Ministry of Education (art. 14/C of Regolamento in materia di Dottorato di Ricerca ). They are nonetheless required to pay insurance fees and stamp duties. Students with at least 66% of certified disability will not be charged either (medical documentation is required).
