4 Upgrade Overview SAP BW/SEM 3.5: Business Scenario You are a technical consultant and have to explain the customer the steps required for the technical upgrade of the SAP BW system. You will therefore need more background information on how to prepare both the technical side and the SAP BW application side due to the interaction between application and basis system. In addition, the customer demands a fast and efficient upgrade process. The system should be ASAP ready again for productive use due to various issues such as transports or large Delta uploads. It is also possible now to include the latest available Business Content Add On Plug In (currently 3.5.2), so for Example the Scenario: Upgrade from BW 3.1 to BW works. From SAP BW 3.1 Content onward, SAP BW Business Content will be delivered as a separate Software Component BI Content Add-On. Separate Support Packages for SAP BW Business Content corrections Approx. 3 Add-Ons between technology BW Releases are planned Always use of the newest content. The duration of the upgrade is reduced to one to two hours, as the Add-On includes only contentrelevant parts. Starting with the BI Content 3.2 Add-On, a technical upgrade of BW systems is no longer necessary as only content-relevant objects are imported. SAP BW Business Content developments and enhancements are available at shorter intervals. Changes in the Support Package procedures separation of Support Packages for the SAP BW Technology and SAP BW Content permit independent imports and tests of Support Packages. 9 Upgrade Scenario within 3.5 Separate support packages for SAP BW business content corrections Approx. 3 add-ons are planned between the technology BW releases SAP AG 2003, Setup BW 3.0B/3.5, Roland Kramer / 9 The BI Content Add-On is automatically installed when you upgrade to SAP BW 3.5. It you want to go from Content Add On to this is possible. Split into two separate support packages: BI Content Add-On support packages and BW Technology support packages. There is no automatic dependency between BI Content Add-On support packages and BW Technology support packages. For each new BI Content Add-On version we recommend that you install the latest BW Technology support package. Future dependencies are communicated together with the relevant support packages. 12 Upgrading the BW Server What is equal to SAP R/3? It is done with the standard upgrade tool R3up It is a system switch What is new with the upgrade to the 6.40 basis? The upgrade now comes on a DVD, so make sure you have a DVD drive! All installations and upgrades (J2EE) are now UNICODE based! You may now choose between downtime-minimized strategy and resource-minimized strategy. However, the PREPARE installs a shadow instance either on the same or on another additional system. What is still required? RFC connection to the OLTP systems should be cut before starting the upgrade Make a full backup of your BW systems before starting the upgrade SAP AG 2003, Setup BW 3.0B/3.5, Roland Kramer / 12 New Features in the Upgrade to Release 3.5 (Based on SAP Web Application Server 6.40) Delivery on DVD As of SAP NetWeaver 04, the data and tools needed for the upgrade are delivered partly on CD and partly on DVD, which reduces the size of the package. One DVD comprises several of the former CDs. The DVD subdirectories correspond to the former CDs. Instead of asking for directories, R3up, however still asks you to mount CDs. Therefore, Making Entries for the Parameter Input Module [page 45] now includes a table that maps the former CDs to the new DVD directories. Oracle: Early creation of secondary indexes With strategy downtime-minimized, some of the secondary indexes will already be created during uptime. This applies to secondary indexes that are new in the target release and whose fields already exist in the source release. The background job that creates the indexes will not lock the tables concerned. Phase list for the upgrade in HTML format The phase list [page 213] is no longer part of the upgrade documentation. Instead, it is contained in the htdoc subdirectory of the upgrade directory in the form of HTML files. You can also create the phase list yourself by using the htmlphl option to call R3up. New procedure for dealing with add-ons In the IS_SELECT phase, you can also include SAINT packages in the upgrade that you put in the transport directory before the upgrade. Calculating an add-on queue If you made a decision for all add-ons in the IS_SELECT phase, a new queue calculation is triggered. This calculation checks whether the import prerequisites can be met for the add-ons, and determines the sequence in which the corresponding requests are imported. After Prepare & actions preformed per it s recommendations - A roll forward would also need any DB changes from this step! - Remember to include a file system backup (including the SAP_PUT directory) Online back-up before start of downtime "Always make sure you backup the upgrade directory as well! If you have to restore your database during downtime without a matching backup of the upgrade directory, you are in trouble!!!" Installation of add-ons during R3up It is now possible to install an ADD-ON during the upgrade (new phase IS_INST). This only works, if the add-on provider allows this through a special SAP note. Add-Ons can be classified as non-patchable, so they won't show up in IS_SELECT (e. g. the Enterprise Add- Ons). Improved free space checks The free space checks and requirements have some improvements, so one should have less tablespace overflows during the upgrade. Takes number of clients into account, calculates pool and cluster tables properly, and takes into account indexes. Improve checking of Support Package/Kernel dependencies It is possible that support packages bound into the upgrade require a newer kernel than the one in /usr/sap/put/exe. PREPARE will report it in CHECKS.LOG and give detailed information as required. Productive use: From a BW perspective this refers to the ability to execute queries against the BW system, so the option resource minimized gives the End user a faster possibility to work again with the System, especially when you have to import Support Packages after the technical Upgrade again. Also there is a need to some Post Activities after the Upgrade, to let the User continue working without errors related from the Upgrade. If Downtime minimized is selected users can expect ~2-4 hours of upgrade processing related downtime for executions of queries. Other BW operations: Note: Operations such as Data loading, Data and BW Object administration, and BW query element building should cease at the start of R3up. - These BW operations create objects in the Data Dictionary and Database. For the upgrade special executables like R3up, UaServer, UaGui or special versions of a SAP system executable like tp, R3trans, R3load are used. Do not exchange a special upgrade tool like tp or R3trans with a regular one from the start or the target release, unless adviced explicitly by a note. The version of the most SAP executables could be determined with option -V. For those tools, which could connect to the database, a value in the line DB library indicates, that the corresponding DB library could be loaded. Additional documentation could be found in note R3up could run in server mode (recomended) or in scroll mode. In server mode also the Upgrade Assistent Server must run to recieve the standard output of R3up. The Upgrade Assistent Gui need no permanent connection to the server. 19 Change of the Logon Software to 6.40 The Shadow Instance is only accessible by the new frontend software for 6.40 or higher after upgrade phase START_SHDI_FIRST The Shadow Instance will be introduced during the PREPARE Phase and removed after the UPGRADE Process.
