Introduction Introduction The M4747A Battery Charger Kit contains: the M3517A AC Power Module the M3516A Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Battery Pack the M3506A Battery Charger Adapter. These components provide the ability to charge batteries outside of the M4735A HeartStart XL Defibrillator/Monitor. This guide provides directions for using the AC Power Module and instructions for proper battery maintenance. For further detailed information on battery maintenance, refer to About Sealed Lead Acid Batteries, an application note. For information on operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining the defibrillator/monitor, refer to the M4735A HeartStart XL Defibrillator/Monitor Instructions for Use. 1
Charging Configurations Charging Configurations Charging may take place while the battery is in either the: M4747A Battery Charger, or the M4735A HeartStart XL Defibrillator/Monitor. Batteries charge to 90% of their capacity in approximately 3 hours. It will take about 12 additional hours to reach a fully-charged state. It is important to choose a charging configuration that allows batteries to be fully charged between uses. Configuration 1 - Frequent Use If you use your HeartStart XL more than once a day, there is not sufficient time between uses to fully charge batteries in the HeartStart XL. In this situation, the recommended practice is to charge batteries using the Battery Charger Kit (as shown in Figure 1), so that the batteries can reach a fully-charged state. Configuration 2 - Infrequent Use If you use your HeartStart XL less than once a day, there is sufficient time between uses to fully charge batteries in the HeartStart XL. In this case, the recommended practice is to charge the batteries continuously by leaving the HeartStart XL connected to AC power (as shown in Figure 2). 2
Charging Configurations Figure 1 Charging Configuration for Frequent Use Figure 2 Charging Configuration for Infrequent Use 3
Overview of Indicators Overview of Indicators The AC Power Module has three LED indicators that tell you the status of the power module and the battery being charged. The indicators and their meanings are as follows: Table 1 Indicators The Charge Done Indicator Charging Indicator Power Indicator Is Green when the battery is fully charged. Off when the battery is less than 100% charged. Off when the battery is not installed in the Battery Charger Adapter. Amber when the battery is charging. Green when the battery is 90% charged. Off when power is not connected. Green when power is connected. Red when there is a problem with the power module or the battery being charged. 4
Figure 3 Indicators Connecting the AC Power Module &KDUJH'RQH,QGLFDWRU &KDUJLQJ,QGLFDWRU 3RZHU,QGLFDWRU Connecting the AC Power Module To connect the AC Power Module: 1. Plug the AC Power Module power cord into an AC power source. (For North America, use only 120 V.) 2. Verify that the Power Indicator illuminates, showing that power is supplied to the module. (See Figure 3.) 3. Connect the AC Power Module interface cable to the Battery Charger Adapter. To do so, align the white arrow on the power module cable with the white triangle on the receiving connector; push the cable into the connector until you hear it click in place. 5
Charging a Battery Charging a Battery A battery in the Battery Charger Adapter begins charging when the AC Power Module is connected. As the battery charges, the power module indicators keep you informed about the battery s status. Table 2 Charging Indicators When the Is Then Charging indicator amber the battery is charging. Charging indicator green the battery is 90% charged. Charge done indicator green the battery is fully charged. Caution Batteries should be charged until they are fully charged. This takes about 15 hours. Repeated partial charging significantly decreases a battery s life. Batteries should be charged at temperatures between 10 o C (50 o F) and 30 o C (86 o F) for maximum battery life. Batteries charge more slowly when the temperature is below 5 o C (41 o F) or above 40 o C (104 o F). Batteries do not charge at temperatures above 60 o C (140 o F). Repeated charging at very high or very low temperatures may shorten the life of a battery. 6
Testing Battery Capacity Testing Battery Capacity As sealed lead acid batteries age due to usage and storage conditions, their capacity to store and deliver energy diminishes. The Battery Capacity Test provides a quantitative measure of battery capacity. Performing a Battery Capacity Test periodically over the life of the battery gives an indication of how that battery is aging, and what level of performance it is capable of delivering. A battery s capacity is affected most by the frequency of use and by the typical duration of each use (i.e., how deeply it is discharged before recharging). General guidelines for performing the Battery Capacity Test are noted below. Table 3 Battery Capacity Test Performance Guidelines Perform a Battery Capacity Test Every 6 months Every 3 months Average Usage Infrequent use for short duration* Frequent use, or for longer duration * Infrequent use is less than once per day. Short duration is < 15 shocks, or < 30 minutes of monitoring, or < 6 shocks and 20 minutes of monitoring. You should also perform a Battery Capacity Test any time you are concerned about the battery s performance. You may choose to perform the Battery Capacity Test less frequently if your storage and usage procedures ensure another charged battery is always available. 7
Testing Battery Capacity Battery Capacity Test To perform a Battery Capacity Test: 1. Turn the HeartStart XL off. 2. Label the HeartStart XL to indicate to others that testing is in progress and the battery may not be used. 3. Insert a charged battery. 4. If an AC power cord is connected, unplug it. While pressing Mark, turn the Energy Select knob to AED On or Manual On to start the test. 5. Allow the test to proceed to completion. The test takes approximately three hours and is complete when test results print out and the device turns itself off. 6. Review the test results and take the appropriate action, as follows: Table 4 Battery Capacity Test Results If Then... Elapsed Time > 95 minutes and Low Battery Time > 10 minutes Elapsed Time < 95 minutes or Low Battery Time < 10 minutes 1. The battery passed the test. 2. Record "pass CT" and the date on the bottom of the battery. 3. Recharge the battery before use. 1. The battery failed the test. 2. Record "fail CT" and the date on the bottom of the battery. 3. Discard the battery appropriately. 8
Cleaning Exterior Surfaces Cleaning Exterior Surfaces The Battery Charger Kit should be kept clean and free of dust. The module is chemically resistant to common hospital cleaning solutions and non-caustic detergents. Some of the approved cleaning solutions are listed below: Isopropyl alcohol (70% in water) Mild soap and water Chlorine bleach (3% in water) Quaternary ammonium compounds, such as Lysol (10% in water) When cleaning the power module: Avoid pouring fluids on the module. Do not allow fluids to penetrate the exterior surfaces of the module. Do not use abrasive cleaners or strong solvents such as acetone or acetone-based compounds. Disconnect from AC power source. Remover battery from adapter. 9
Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Refer to Table 5 if you encounter difficulties while using the Battery Charger Kit. Table 5 Troubleshooting Problem Potential Cause Possible Solutions The power indicator does not light up. The power connection is compromised. A fuse has blown. Check that the power module is plugged in. Call for service. The charging indicator does not light up; the power indicator is lit. The power module is unable to detect a battery. Check connections to the Battery Charger Adapter. Make sure the battery is properly installed. Call for service. The power indicator is red. There is a problem with the power module or the battery in the power module. Remove the battery. If the battery is the cause of the problem, the power indicator turns green. If the power indicator remains red with the battery removed, call for service. 10

Battery Capacity Battery Capacity A fully-charged M3516A battery, operating at room temperature, provides greater than 100 minutes of monitoring or more than joule charge-shock cycles. Battery Life Expectancy Life-expectancy of a battery depends on the frequency and duration of use. When properly maintained and stored, the life-expectancy of a battery is about 1.5 years. For more aggressive use models, the life-expectancy may be less. Battery Storage Use batteries regularly and rotate them to distribute the use evenly. When storing batteries, make sure that the battery terminals do not come in contact with metallic objects. Do not store batteries without charging them for more than one month, if installed in the defibrillator, or more than three months, if not installed in the defibrillator. Storage at temperatures between 15 o C (59 o F) and 30 o C (86 o F) is recommended to maximie life-expectancy. Caution Storing at temperatures above 40 o C (104 o F) for extended periods of time will significantly reduce a battery s life-expectancy. 13
