1 Modern Language Association (MLA) works cited list Overview The following examples supersede what is provided in the Penguin Handbook or other online MLA documentation or web sites, such as noodle.com or easybib.com. The information in this handout comes from the most recent edition of the MLA bible on documentation formatting: MLA Style Manual and guide to Scholarly Publishing. 3 rd edition. New York: the Modern Language Association of America, The big difference between the old and this updated formatting edition is that writers must identify whether the source is print or web. Also, if it s a web source, only the database is listed and no URL. However, an URL should be included only if the reader probably cannot locate the source without it (212). A works cited list should provide information which will allow the reader to access this source easily and readily if the print media, Internet access, or database access is available. A final comment about the works cited list: ensure you are consistent with your font (type and size) and that you indent the second and subsequent lines. You want to present a clean, alphabetized copy of your works cited list. Format Surname, first_name. Title of Article. Name of book or journal. vol.issue (date of publication): inclusive page numbers. Medium of publication (eg. Print). [see Armstrong below for an example] Surname, first_name. Title of Article. Name of book or journal or newspaper. vol.issue (date of publication): inclusive page numbers if available. Database. Web. Date accessed. [see Benson or Miller below for an example]
