1 Green Mountain Dojo: Kyokushin Karate Adult Rank Syllabus The Green Mountain Dojo grading syllabus is aligned with International Standards lists the minimum requirements that must be met for promotion to each specific rank level. The Adult Rank Syllabus applies to students of ages 13 and up. Students are required to meet all of the standards of their current rank as well as those of all previous ranks. For example, under the rank of green belt, only green belt standards are listed, however the student is also responsible for meeting all previous requirements under yellow, blue, orange etc. Requirements For: 10 th Kyu Orange Belt Stability Level Minimum 2 3 Months Consistent Training To Qualify Basic understanding of dojo etiquette Gains in strength, fitness and flexibility see specific requirements below. 6 Shodan 1 st Black Belt 4 ½ To 5 Years Consistent Training with a Minimum of One Year at the Rank of Ikkyu The grading is typically administered over two days (can be one). In order to create a unified yudansha-kai, the grading should be held at a national event such as a tournament or Gasshuku training. If this is not available or possible within a reasonable time frame; the grading must be administered by a minimum Sandan grade and the BKK NA Board must be notified (and approve) prior to the grading. The Shodan grading consists of the following: Written Test; (must pass by 80% to be eligible for remaining parts of grading) Fitness, Kihon, Execution of all techniques, Oral Testing Kata Kumite Self-Defense / Tameshiwari GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The applicant shall have a thorough knowledge of the history of Kyokushin Karate and Mas Oyama. The applicant shall have at least one year of assistant teaching. The applicant will have attended all current years special trainings, including a tournament official s clinic. The applicant will have assisted in the organization and running of any dojo events or tournaments. All dojo and BKK NA Fees are current RESUME & REPORT The applicant shall submit with the application, a four page minimum, and typed report detailing their past history, present training, future plans, and the effect Karate has had in their life. The report shell be submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to the date of the grading. Is an BKK NA member in good standing, consistently in compliance with all BKK NA Policies and Procedures. If candidate is a dojo operator, he/she shall also be in compliance with all policies pertaining to dojo operations. KIHON AND SELF DEFENSE Demonstrated technical mastery in all previous rank requirements. Deep Understanding of Kata Bunkai for Ju-kyu through Shodan kata. Deeper understanding of Tensho kata and practical applications. In order to create a unified yudansha-kai, the grading should be held at a national event such as a tournament or Gasshuku training. If this is not available or possible within a reasonable time frame; the grading exam must be administered by a minimum Godan grade and the BKK NA Board must be notified (and approve) prior to the grading. The Sandan grading consists of the following: Fitness, Kihon, Execution of all techniques, Oral Testing Kata Kumite Self-Defense Tameshiwari Martial Arts Theory & Strategy GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The applicant shall have a thorough knowledge of the BKK NA Policies and Regulations The applicant will have attended all current years special trainings The applicant will have assisted in the organization and running of any dojo events or tournaments. The applicant will have participated in conferences, tournaments, camps, demonstrations, and seminars. The applicant will have trained at Honbu Japan at least once All dojo and BKK NA Fees are current. RESUME & REPORT The applicant shall submit with the application, a 6 page minimum report that details their insights and experiences from Shodan to Sandan with an emphasis on insights in teaching the Kyokushin system, dojo operations, and the role of the sempai in the traditional karate dojo. The report shall be completed and submitted to the BKK NA Board a minim of 30 days prior to the actual physical grading date. CERTIFICATIONS Current CPR Certificate (optional) IKOK Fukushin experience and current certificate (Corner Referee) ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Exhibits a high level of commitment to regular training (exemplary work ethic). Extensive regular instructional experience at an advanced level.. Has a minimum of three years of consistent training at the rank of Nidan. Experience as a tournament corner official in national and international events. Is an BKK NA dojo operator in good standing, consistently in compliance with all BKK NA Policies and Procedures. As a dojo operator, he/she shall also be in compliance with all policies pertaining to dojo operations. KIHON AND SELF DEFENSE Demonstrated technical mastery in all previous rank requirements. Deep understanding of Kata Bunkai for Ju kyu through Nidan kata. Deeper understanding of physiology and mechanics of kihon and ability to teach same. Candidate adapts to unknown or rapidly changing situations with confidence, accuracy, and speed. Ability to teach syllabus to Nidan level, clearly and completely. 9 Yondan 4th Black Belt Years Consistent Training with a Minimum of Four Years at the Rank of Sandan The Yondan test consists of the following. will be administered by the full BKK NA Board, and will cover: Fitness, Kihon, Execution of all techniques, Oral Testing Kata Kumite Self-Defense Tameshiwari Martial Arts Theory & Strategy GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The applicant shall have a thorough knowledge of the BKK NA Policies and Regulations. The applicant will have organized / attended all current years special trainings, including the BKK NA tournament official s clinic. The applicant will have organized / participated in conferences, tournaments, camps, demonstrations, tournaments, and seminars. The applicant will have trained at Honbu Japan at least once since their Sandan grading All BKK NA Fees are current RESUME & REPORT The applicant shall submit with the application, a 4 page minimum typed report detailing their past history, present training, future plans, effect Karate has had in their life, major milestones achieved and reasons for Yondan application. CERTIFICATIONS Current CPR Certificate (optional) Shushin Certificate (Center Referee) ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Exhibits a high level of commitment to regular training (exemplary work ethic). Extensive regular teaching experience at an advanced level. Has a minimum of four years of consistent training at the rank of Sandan. Experience as a tournament corner official at national and international events. Is a BKK NA member in good standing, consistently in compliance with all BKK NA Policies and Procedures. If candidate is a dojo operator, he/she shall also be in compliance with all policies pertaining to dojo operations (such as registering all students with Honbu, etc). KIHON AND SELF DEFENSE Demonstrated technical mastery in all previous rank requirements. Deep understanding of Kata Bunkai for Ju -kyu through Sandan kata. Tobi Ushiro Geri Jodan Ushiro Mawashi Geri Tobi Kaiten Uchi Mawashi Geri Sushiho Optional Kata Project The candidate shall submit a type written research paper on one of the following kata: Sanchin, Tsuki-no, Gekisai Dai, Gekisai Sho, Saiha, Yantsu, Seienchin, Garyu, or Sushiho. The research shall include a review of all techniques contained in the subject kata, bunkai, a history of the kata s lineage (where, when and by whom developed), and its development to date. It shall also explore the underlying philosophical and technical principles that are being introduced in the kata. The bunkai portion of the report will be submitted in video format for review. The report and bunkai portion will be completed and submitted to BKK NABoard a minim of 30 days prior to the actual physical grading date. Continued on next page

10 Yondan, continued BKK NA Board will determine the kumite requirements on a case by case basis. Understanding and application of body vital points with knowledge of the anatomy and physiology associated with each point. 11 Godan 5th Black Belt Years Consistent Training with a Minimum of Five Years at the Rank of Yondan The Godan grading consists of the following. Unless otherwise stipulated by the BKK NA, the test is undertaken at Honbu Japan, will be administered by the International Grading Committee and will cover: Fitness, Kihon, Execution of all techniques, Oral Testing Kata Kumite Self-Defense Instruction proficiency for all of the above. Martial Arts Theory, Strategy, and Philosophy GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The applicant will have organized / participated in conferences, tournaments, camps, demonstrations, tournaments, and seminars. The applicant shall have a demonstrated level of successful Dojo, Branch, State, and Organizational Leadership All Dojo and BKK NA Fees are current. The applicant will have trained at Honbu Japan at least once since their Yondan grading. The applicant will have successfully trained students to 2 dan grades and/or successful tournament fighters at the national and/or international levels. RESUME & REPORT As the Godan rank is about masterfully teaching and sharing knowledge; the applicant shall submit with the application, a thesis type paper (minimum 30 pages) on a mental, technical, or spiritual (or all three) topic within the Kyokushin system that furthers, validates, or solidifies the systems current knowledge base. The topic and a brief executive summary will be presented to the BKK NA for approval prior to undertaking the thesis project. The thesis will be complete, submitted and approved by the BKK NA prior to the candidate s actual Shinsa. The candidate can combine prior publications to form a whole and cogent thesis presentation. CERTIFICATIONS Current Shushin Certificate (Center Referee) ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Exhibits a high level of commitment to regular training (exemplary work ethic). Extensive regular teaching experience at an advanced level is considered a master teacher by peers. Has a minimum of five years of consistent training at the rank of Yondan. Is of consistent service to others. Experienced as a tournament center referee at national and international events. Is a BKK NA member in good standing, consistently in compliance with all BKK NA Policies and Procedures. Candidate must be a successful dojo operator and he/she shall also be in compliance with all policies pertaining to dojo operations (such as registering all students with Honbu, etc). KIHON (te & ashi waza) and SELF DEFENSE Demonstrated technical mastery in all previous rank requirements. Deeper understanding of physiology and mechanics of kihon and ability to teach same. Ability to teach syllabus to Yondan level, clearly and completely. Bassai and other advanced Goju-Ryu Kata Demonstrated understanding of bunkai (oyo and hiden) and advanced applications for all Kyokushin kata. BKK NA Board will determine the kumite requirements on a case by case basis. Understanding and application of body vital points with knowledge of the anatomy and physiology associated with each point and ability to systematically and effectively teach the same.
