6 ASTM Pipe Introduction ASTM Pipe Introduction The term pipe covers a specific range of sizes laid down by ANSI specifications. Any sizes not covered by these specifications are tube. Staless Steel Pipe dimensions determed by ASME B6.9 coverg the outside diameter and the Schedule wall thickness. Note that staless wall thicknesses to ANSI B6.9 all have an S suffix. Sizes without an S suffix are to ANSI B6.0 which is tended for carbon steel pipes. Seamless and Welded ASTM A2: Seamless and straight-seam welded austenitic pipe tended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Filler metal not permitted durg weldg. ASTM A58: Electric fusion welded austenitic pipe for corrosive and/or high temperature service. Typically only pipe up to 8 ch is produced to this specification. Addition of filler metal is permitted durg weldg. ASTM A790: Seamless and straight-seam welded ferritic/austenitic (duplex) pipe tended for general corrosive service, with a particular emphasis on resistance to stress corrosion crackg. ASTM A409: Straight-seam or spiral-seam electric fusion welded large diameter austenitic light-wall pipe sizes 4 to 0 with walls Sch 5S and Sch 0S for corrosive and/or high temperature service. ASTM A76: Seamless austenitic pipe for high temperature applications. ASTM A8: Sgle-seam, sgle- or double- welded austenitic pipe for high temperature and general corrosive applications. ASTM A84: Cold-worked welded austenitic pipe for high temperature and general corrosive service. Note: Welded pipes manufactured to ASTM A2, A790 and A8 must be produced by an automatic process with NO addition of filler metal durg the weldg operation. Welded pipe specifications Usually it will be to ASTM A2. If it is to ASTM A58 then there are various Classes available as shown below. The Class Number dictates how the pipe is welded and what non-destructive tests: Class : Pipe shall be double welded by processes employg filler metal all passes and shall be completely radiographed. Class 2: Pipe shall be double welded by processes employg filler metal all passes. No-radiography is required. Class : Pipe shall be welded one pass by processes employg filler metal and shall be completely radiographed. Class 4: Same as Class except that the weldg process exposed to the side pipe surface may be made without the addition of filler metal. Class 5: Pipe shall be double welded by processes employg filler metal all passes and shall be spot radiographed. Markgs on pipe The full identification of the pipe should be contuously marked down its whole length, cludg: Nomal Pipe Size (Nomal Bore) Schedule (Wall Thickness) Specification Grade Method of Manufacture (Seamless or Welded) Heat Number Manufacturer s Name or Symbol -

28 Butt Weld Fittgs Introduction Butt Weld Fittgs Introduction Butt Weld Fittgs are a family of fittgs used for formg circumferential butt weld jots pipework systems. They are used only conjunction with ANSI Pipe and are available the same size range. They are used areas where pipe-work is permanent and are designed to provide good flow characteristics. Manufacture Materials. Refer to chemical composition table ASTM A240 on page -6. Fittgs may be made from forggs, bars, plates, or seamless or welded tubular products, provided the materials conform to the chemical composition table. The steel may be melted by electric-furnace, or vacuum-furnace, or by either of these followed by vacuum or electroslag-consumable remeltg. Formg. Fittgs may be formed by haerg, pressg, piercg, extrudg, upsettg, rollg, bendg, fusion weldg, machg or any combation of these processes. Heat Treatment. All fittgs are heat treated accordance with the heat treatment table. All weldg must be done prior to heat treatment. Manufacturg standards Wrought pipe fittgs are manufactured to dimensions and tolerances ANSI B6.9 with the exception of short radius elbows and return bends which are made to ANSI B6.28. Light-weight corrosion resistant fittgs are made to MSS SP4. Butt Weld Fittgs are available to ASTM A40, ASTM A85 and MSS SP4. These standards require the fittgs to be manufactured as follows: Seamless austenitic fittgs are made from seamless pipe to ASTM A2. Welded fittgs austenitic grades are manufactured from welded pipe to ASTM A2 or plate to ASTM A240. Note that welded fittgs manufactured from plate may have two-welds. Duplex (ferritic/austenitic) grades are manufactured from pipe to ASTM A790 or plate to ASTM A240. ASTM A40/A85 Butt Weld Fittgs are sub-divided to four classes: WP-S: Made from seamless pipe to ASTM A2 (Austenitic) or ASTM A790 (Duplex). WP-W: Manufactured from welded pipe to ASTM A2 (Austenitic) or ASTM A790 (Duplex). There is no requirement for radiography unless a manufacturer s weld has been troduced or there are welds made with the addition of filler metal. WP-WX: Of welded construction. All welds must be 00% radiographed accordance with Paragraph UW-5 of Section VIII, Division of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. WP-WU: Of welded construction. All welds must be 00% examed ultrasonically accordance with Paragraph UW-5 of Section VIII, Division of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Note that this Class only applies to austenitic fittgs made to ASTM A40. CR Fittgs are manufactured to the requirements of MSS SP4. These are light-weight fittgs and do not require radiography. : WP: Means Wrought Pipe CR: Means Corrosion Resistant Markgs on tube and fittgs The full identification of the fittg should be marked on it cludg: Nomal Pipe Size (Nomal Bore) Schedule (Wall Thickness) Specification Grade Method of Manufacture (Seamless or Welded) Heat Number Manufacturer s Name or Symbol -

42 Butt Weld Fittgs Weights Butt Weld Fittgs Weights Buttweld fittg weights As mentioned previously, the ANSI/ASME and MSS buttweld fittg specifications do not specify wall thicknesses and weights for fittgs. Weights quoted the dimension and weight tables are therefore based on manufacturers formation and should be considered as approximate and provided as a guide only (fittg weights can vary considerably between manufacturers due to differences construction). The example weights quoted are for 40S or Standard (STD) wall thicknesses only. It is possible to calculate the approximate weight at any other wall thicknesses usg the factors provided the table below. These factors are calculated from the ANSI/ASME B6.9M and B6.0M pipe weights and are based on the proportional relationship of the pipe weights (kg/m) to the weights of 40S and STD wall thickness pipe at each NPS. ASME/ANSI pipe sizes and weight multiplication factors for use obtag approximate fittg weights. For use with the example (40S/STD) weights provided the ANSI/ASME tables of this section. NPS Multiplication Factors = Proportional relationship of pipe weights to 40S or STD pipe at each NPS. Multiply the example 40S/STD fittg weights (at the required NPS) by the factors below (at the same NPS) to give approximate weights at different wall thicknesses. 5S 0S 40S 80S STD 60 XS XXS / / / / / / / / / The relationship between pipe weights at each NPS can strictly only be applied to fittgs where the same proportional relationship is mataed the fittg. Less accurate results will therefore be obtaed for reducg tees, for example, than for elbows, equal tees, etc. The type of fittg construction may also make the factors accurate. -5

43 BSP Fittgs Introduction/Range BSP fittgs are a family of fittgs used to connect up threaded pipe and equipment. They are manufactured from pipe, bar, hollow bar, castgs or forggs. The pipe to be threaded must have a wall thickness of Schedule 40S mimum. The fittgs are used non-critical, low pressure applications where weldg is not possible or required. They therefore provide a relatively low cost method of connection. BSP fittgs are usually fitted with a sealant (paste or tape such as PTFE) and are considered to be permanent pipe work. Low Pressure BSP Fittgs are rated at 50lb and are made to wrought iron specification BS 740. BSP fittgs are made only type 6. They are provided with a Certificate of Conformity only, and not a full Test Certificate. Sizes /8 to ch are the most coonly used and thus the most readily available. External MALE threads are tapered and Internal FEMALE threads are parallel. The threads are cut to BS2: Part : 985 and are called Whitworth Threads See below. 45 Flanges Introduction Weld Neck Slip On Type Jotg Method General Description Used critical applications. These are circumferentially welded onto the system at their necks which means that the tegrity of the butt-welded area can easily be examed by X-ray radiography. The bores of both pipe and flange match thus reducg turbulence and erosion. This is slipped over the pipe and then fillet welded. Easy to use fabricated applications. Flanges Introduction Bld Sometimes called a blankg flange, this is used for blankg off pipeles, valves and pumps and as an spection cover. Socket Weld This is counter-bored to accept the pipe, which is then fillet welded. The bore of both the pipe and the flange are the same to ensure good flows. Screwed/Threaded This requires no weldg and is used to connect other threaded components low pressure noncritical applications. Lap Jot Rg Type Jot These are always used with either a stub end or a taft which is butt-welded to the pipe with the flange loose behd it. Thus the stub end or the taft always provides the sealg face. Easily assembled and aligned, it is favoured low pressure applications. To reduce cost these backg flanges can be supplied without a hub and/or made from coated carbon steel. This can be employed on Weld Neck, Slip On or Bld Flanges for leak-proof connection at high pressures. The seal is made by a metal rg beg compressed to a hexagonal groove on the flange face. 5-

46 Flanges Introduction Flanges Introduction Type Plate or Table (BS 0:962) General Description These are produced to suit Nomal Bore/NPS Pipe Sizes. They are produced from bar or plate rather than forggs and are not pressure-rated. Bld and Slip-On, flat-faced, types are readily available grades 04L and 6L sizes from /2 to 6 as Table D and Table E, with larger sizes and other Tables (thicknesses) made to order. These economical flanges are used for light-duty applications where corrosion resistance is the primary consideration rather than high pressure or temperature. BS EN 092 Part Also referred to as PN Flanges (Formerly BS4504) These are not terchangeable with ANSI Flanges. They are readily available types 04L and 6L with various pressure ratgs of which 0 Bar & 6 Bar are the most coonly used. 54 Flanges Specifications - ASTM A82/A82M Flanges Specifications - ASTM A82/A82M Forged or rolled alloy steel pipe flanges, forged fittgs, and valves and parts for high temperature service This specification covers forged low alloy and staless steel pipg components for use pressure systems. These clude flanges, fittgs, valves and similar parts manufactured to dimensional standards such as ASME/ANSI. Products made to this specification are limited to a maximum weight of 0,000 lb (4,540 kg). Note - Although low allow steels are covered by this standard, only staless steels (martensitic, ferritic, austenitic and duplex) are cluded this suary. Dimensions and tolerances Dimensions and tolerances. ASME/ANSI specifications B6.5 and B6. are referenced. Flange dimensions and tolerances (see page 5-2). Manufacture Materials. Refer to chemical composition table (staless steel grades only shown). Elements not specified the table are not permitted, specifically selenium or other elements added for free-machg properties. The steel may be melted by electric-furnace, or vacuum-furnace, or by either of these followed by vacuum or electroslag-consumable remeltg. Vacuum meltg or remeltg is not suitable for grades contag or modified by nitrogen. Grade F XM-27Cb may be electron-beam melted. Manufacture. The steel is forged or rolled as near as possible to size and shape of the product. Small cyldrical parts (excludg flanges) may be mached directly from forged or rolled bar without additional hot workg (limits defed ASTM A24 apply for martensitic steels, A40 for austenitic steels and A85 for duplex steels). Elbows, returns and tees are not mached directly from bar. Heat treatment. Refer to heat treatment table. Heat treatment of forggs may be performed before machg. For martensitic and ferritic grades, liquid quench followed by temperg is permitted, subject to purchaser agreement. Small cyldrical parts (excludg flanges) mached directly from forged or rolled austenitic steel may be furnished annealed to this specification with subsequent light cold drawg or straighteng permitted. Markg. Each forgg is marked with manufacturers name, heat number (or heat identification), designation of service ratg, specification number, grade (e.g. F04) and size. Additionally: QT = Liquid quenched and tempered W = Welded WNS = Not post repair weld heat treated. Fish and repair Appearance. Forggs have a workmanlike fish and shall be free of scale, machg burns and jurous, imperfections (i.e. those that encroach on mimum wall thickness). Defect repair by grdg or machg. The followg may be removed: Surface discontuity as above. Mechanical marks, abrasions or pits deeper than /6 (.6). Defect repair by weldg: Permitted unless purchaser prohibits. Defect removal by chippg or grdg is verified by magnetic particle spection. Repair is limited to 0% of surface area and /% of nomal wall thickness. Repair weldg electrodes and post weld repair heat treatments are defed A82 but are not detailed this suary. 5-0

68 Hygienics Introduction/Tube Range Hygienics Introduction/Tube Range Staless Steel Hygienics is the name given to a range of tube and fittgs used applications requirg a clean and sanitary flow of liquids and where it is essential to avoid contamation of the products beg carried. These applications cover the food processg, beverage, biotech and pharmaceutical dustries cludg breweries and dairies. The applications are low pressure with a maximum of 50lbs. The products are available grades 04L and-6l. The size range is from /2 ch to 4 ch O/D. The tube and fittgs are of welded construction with the ternal bead rolled to flatten it and elimate crevices, thus preventg terruptions to the flow and elimatg the risk of contamation or bug traps as well as facilitate easy cleang. The tube and fittgs are offered with a choice of external fishes: Descaled Bright Annealed Dull Polished Semi-Bright or Bright Polished. Manufacturg standards Hygienic tubes are manufactured to ASTM A270, DIN 850, ISO 207 and BS 4825 Part. Hygienic fittgs are manufactured to BS 4825 Parts 2 to 5. Markgs on tube and fittgs Tube and fittgs with a bright annealed or polished fish will be unmarked. 69 Hygienics Hygienic Bends and Tees - BS 4825 : Part 2 There are two types of bends and tees available, the Short type and Long type. For bends, the Short type simply comprises a 90 bend, while the Long type has a straight leg added at both ends. Tees have equivalent dimensions makg them terchangeable. The straight leg of long type bends and tees was origally added to enable expanded type clamp and union parts to be fitted, but they are now widely used all-welded stallations. 70 Hygienics Clamp Fittgs - BS 4825 : Part Hygienics Clamp Fittgs - BS 4825 : Part Clamp fittgs provide a crevice free jot and, dependg on the clamp design, requires no tools for assembly or dismantlg for cleang. Provides quick method of regularly openg up a system and often has some kd of closure device such as a Triclover clamp. Used where corrosion and contamation are particular hazards, as the pharmaceutical dustry. Also used systems carryg warm semi-solids and viscous liquids, such as chocolate and tomato sauce, which must not cool the le but tend to cause regular blockages. Clamp fittgs comprise four parts two weldg ferrules, a seal rg and a clamp. The ends of the tubes and/or fittgs to be joed have a weldg ferrule fitted by weldg (or expansion on to expanded type parts if used). The jot is made by positiong the weldg ferrules together, with a seal serted between the faces, and then clampg the ferrules together. The clamp is not contact with the contents of the pipe and may be made of any suitable material. Assembly Typical Clamp 6-

72 Hygienics IDF Unions - BS 4825 : Part 4 Hygienics IDF Unions - BS 4825 : Part 4 The International Dairy Federation, IDF, couplg provides a crevice free jot origally designed for applications where frequent dismantlg for cleang would not be necessary. They may be operated at pressures up to.6 MPa. The Ler is mached and the Nitrile or EPDM Seal is a square section and is more substantial than the RJT. The IDF Union also has a thicker Nut than the RJT. It is mached rather than pressed and is considered easier to use. Compared to the RJT, the IDF has a smoother and cleaner flow le that is free of crevices and bug traps. It is used where CIP (Clean In Place) systems prevail, with the RJT only tendg to be used where very regular access is needed. IDF type couplgs comprise four parts a male part, a ler, a seal rg and a hexagonal or round nut. The ends of the tubes and/or fittgs to be joed have a male part and ler fitted by weldg (or expansion on to expanded type parts if used). The jot is made by positiong the male part and the ler together, with a seal serted between. The nut is then slipped over the ler, screwed on to the male part and tightened agast the ler to compress the seal. BS 4825 : Part requirements for IDF union parts follow. Assembly The illustration above shows the assembly of an IDF union with welded parts. Options: Expanded IDF expanded type union parts are available. Round nuts. True IDF round nuts have no slots on their circumference, makg them tamper proof, but necessitatg the use of a special spanner. 6-5

However, present day cleang systems are able to sanitise this area successfully without dismantlg the majority of applications. RJT unions may be operated at pressures up to.0 MPa. RJT type couplgs comprise four parts a male part, a ler, an O-rg seal and a hexagonal nut. The ends of the tubes and/or fittgs to be joed have a male part and ler fitted by weldg (or expansion on to expanded type parts if used). The jot is made by positiong the male part and the ler together, with a seal serted between.
