Today The 10 Steps My Story Tips What types of things were you able to do to develop your leadership and professional skills early on in your career (even in college)? What leadership advice do you have for us? What is your job?
The 10 Steps 1. Intelligent 2. Honest 3. Creative 4. Confident 5. Driven 6. Courageous 7. CNB Seen 8. Volunteer 9. Interests 10.Professional
Step 1 Intelligent Analyze your skills What skills do you have that make you a good leader? Good Listener? Positive Attitude? Desire? Invest in a good leadership book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey Made to Stick by Chip Heath & Dan Heath 12 leadership books to watch for in 2015 Tip: Buy the book you will enjoy reading (The Tipping Point Gladwell)
Step 2 Honest Always know that honesty is the best policy - Benjamin Franklin ( ) Be honest about your skills Tip: If you decide your skills are not as strong as they could be, do you give up? Never Famous Introverts o JK Rowling, Bill Gates, Kim Harrington
Step 3 Creative Inspire others by your creativity I m 90 percent hard work and 10 percent talent Quotes For Movie Title: Something's Gotta Give Campus Services Communications Marketing Team Tip: Create a Team of like-minded people
Step 4 Confident Strengthen your Self Confidence Always Relate to your Group National, Regional, State, Local presentations Tip: Grow a thick skin; you likely will not always receive a good evaluation from your leadership group. Don t give up. When possible, adjust your style.
Step 5 Driven If you want to be a leader, do it. Director of Communications for Camus Services job is to tell the Campus Services story. 1. Bookstore 2. Business Services 3. BuzzCard 4. 9 Step 6 Courageous The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People By Stephen R. Covey Many people think either/or. If you re nice, you re not tough. It s important to be nice and courageous. Tip: High courage and consideration are both essential It is the balance that is the mark of real maturity Covey Remember to treat others like you would like to be treated not like you ve been treated.
Step 7 CNB Seen Put yourself where leaders are. SGA Rep (Student Government Assn.) RHA Committee Chair (Residence Hall Assn.) Tip: Join groups that you like. Ask what is needed and fill that position, i.e., committee member = committee chair = board member = officer
Step 8 Volunteer If you don t have a job, a group, volunteer, i.e., volunteer for groups like the Earth Day committee Tip: You can volunteer for both oncampus and off-campus, in your major and out of your major. Remember what interests you. I ve volunteered at Earth Day.
Step 9 Interests What do you like to do? What is your major? Tip: Being part of a committee/group, gives you the opportunity to share talents you might not otherwise use in your everyday job or major. Usually, this group will appreciate you sometimes more than you everyday job or major.
