Sustainability Review 2013 for the Business Year (26)
A Word from our MD Sustainability is a long term responsibility to optimize all resources in the best possible way. Not just environmental impact but also a good working environment and a social responsibility. With a structural work for sustainability, clear goals and concrete action plans we will step by step minimize the impact of our and our customer s actions. At DSV we have always been careful with the resources. Sustainability and economy are part of our culture and something we work with every day. When using less fuel our costs are reduced and our competitiveness is strengthening at the same time as the environmental impact is reduced. We cannot ignore that transportation needs resources and that transportation have a climate impact, however we work actively to reduce the strain on the environment in many different ways. We work actively to optimize the transport chain by monitoring load capacity efficiency and empty driving on traffic level. It is all about using available resources effectively to minimize climate impact. The transport sector is depending on fossil fuels, even though new technics on vehicles as well as fuels have been launched. It is a challenge for the sector to break the connection between growth and emissions from transports. There is widespread research to replace the oil, but there is no obvious alternative. The State Oil Commission has a goal to reduce diesel and oil usage by 50 % before To reach this goal we need to focus on many different alternatives. Bio gas is one alternative. The foremost advantage of bio fuels is that it, when burning, does not increase the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The demand for liquid gas is expected to rise within the next few years. There are already energy efficient gas trucks on the market and the infrastructure is under construction. The by far best way to reduce the emissions is efficiency, and there is still a lot to do when it comes to fuel efficient engines and reduced resources. It is about making a transport as efficient as possible and thus also reducing the impact from the transport. 3 Our Organisation The Air & Sea Division organises transport of cargo by air and sea. The Division offers conventional freight services through its global network. With a complete European network and more than 200 terminals DSV s Road division is one of the top three transport companies in Europe. DSV Solutions specialises in logistics solutions across the entire supply chain, including freight management, customs clearance, warehousing and distribution. DSV s Sustainability Review includes all DSV-companies in Sweden and contains information and figures for In some places the companies share the premises and operate as mutual subcontractors. There have been no changes in organization, which could influence the group of companies since last year s review. None of the companies is bound to report according to Swedish Environmental Legislation. Our Danish parent company, DSV A/S, is officially listed on the Danish stock exchange, and DSV s 2012 Corporate Social Responsibility Report contains the sustainability work for DSV globally. 3(26)
Our Core Values DSV s core values are: Dynamik (Dynamics), Stolthet (Pride) and Värdeskapande (Value Creation) A dynamic growth strategy with regard to the world around and our customers in combination with proud and engaged staff will create the strongest possible value a better environment. 5 The World around us and Focus Areas DSV is a global transport and logistics provider. DSV has business in more than 70 countries and about 22,000 employees worldwide. The transport and logistics market is constantly changing creating great challenges for companies like DSV to refine and improve the products and the service. We produce goods transport with all means of transport and can offer the best combination with regard to environment as well as economy. DSV Solutions provide complete solutions for third party logistics integrating transports, warehousing and value added services. Owners Customers Financiers Staff Security Quality Working Environment Ethics Social Responsibility Authorities Suppliers Health Environment The Public Internal guidelines and policies A constant, professional and open dialogue with the world around us is an important tool to improve business. 5(26)
Customers Our customers are the basis for our operations. Satisfied customers are therefore our first priority. The environment is an important competitive factor. We know that our customers are engaged in environmental matters and the impact of transport on the environment is significant for many of them. We want to build long-term partnership with our customers, and create transport and logistics solutions with minimum impact on our environment. It often becomes apparent that the most sustainable solution also is the most cost efficient Many of our customers evaluate our performance in the same way as we evaluate our suppliers and carry our customer surveys. The result of the evaluation indicates what we are good at and what we need to improve and leads to action plans. We know that our quality affects our customer s competitiveness. We produce goods transports by all means of transport through DSV Road and DSV Air & Sea offering the best combination with regard to environment as well as economy. DSV Solutions provide complete solutions for third party logistics integrating transports, warehousing and value added services. Today we are depending on functioning transports, as we have become used to an increased supply of goods and services. This means that the total transport work for consumer products is increasing. This is possible because of the fact that the transport costs are only a few per cent of the goods value. 6(26)
To optimize our customer s as well as our resources we need to produce quality throughout the entire chain. Visiting customers to inform about the importance of having satisfactory packaging and to make sure that the cargo can be secured according to laws and regulations is part of the work. There is an obvious connection between package-securing of goodsreduced damages-sustainability. Through electronic information to and from our customers mistakes and misunderstandings are eliminated and the quality of information is improved. Through e-services the information used in the entire chain is secured, which contributes to a sustainable development for all parties. Quality - Our Policy DSV will always strive to fulfil the customer s quality demands for effective and reliable transport and logistics services and continuously develop our operations and processes We shall put the customer in focus, be proactive and flexible to customer s demands We shall develop and improve our service according to the changing needs of our clients We shall offer high delivery-security and always be connected with competence, engagement, responsibility and high quality We shall always strive to do right from the start 7(26)
Staff To be an attractive employer, to attract and keep good employees is essential for a long-term sustainable company. DSV in Sweden has about 1,450 employees, worldwide more than 22,000. Our network of colleagues brings together knowledge, experience and ideas from all over the word. Motivated, engaged and competent personnel are a prerequisite for reaching our goal and driving the development forward. Competence is important to increase environmental awareness and the understanding of environmental issues. We run continuous and varied development programmes, from intranet-based quality and environmental trainings to working environment courses and training in cargo securing, dangerous goods and safety on trucks in our terminals and logistics centres. Sustainable development is about making the most of company s total competence creating a good working environment. The staff and the working environment is a natural focus area in our CSR-strategy. The staff is the backbone of DSV whether they work as traffic managers or load and unload goods in the terminals. We want each employee to use its whole competence to find the best transport solutions for our customers. Yearly performance reviews create an important dialogue between managers and staff. These reviews aim to identify individual goals and action plans connected to the company s overall goals. DSV has for many years with good result developed and implemented a good systematic approach to working environment (SAM). We work with risk assessment and safety inspections to identify areas to improvement. Our working environment groups then focus on improvement in these areas. In incidents were reported. Three of these resulted in more than one day sick leave. DSV is working actively for a good HVAC and good ergonomic conditions in our offices. Ergonomics together with safety on trucks have always been high on the agenda in our terminals and logistics sites. Sick leave Air & Sea 1.59 % 2.75 % Road 2.80 % 2.7 % Solutions 5,29 % 5,32 % 8(26)
Working Environment Our Policy DSV management supports the company s business concept by working towards a positive physical and psychosocial environment: Good leadership and co-operation will develop the organisation and form a basis for a good working environment Active environmental work and continuous improvement will minimize the risk of sickness and accidents caused by work Following laws, regulations and instructions is an integral part of our daily routine Security work and fire prevention are prerequisites for a safe environment protecting life, health and property By taking an active part in the working environment DSV will be an attractive partner within the labour-market and in working life Security Our Policy The purpose of the security work is to protect DSV and its resources Together we shall create a safe and secure place of work for our staff, so that life and health is not jeopardized The management shall, by keeping a consistent attitude to safety and security matters, guarantee safety and security throughout the organisation We shall pay attention to and report injury, risk and threat We shall show responsibility for safety and security to our customers, partners and owners We shall all follow approved rules and routines Offence or neglect of existing regulations will be regarded as serious 9(26)
Health Excerpt from Alcohol and Drug Policy Strive for alcohol and drug free places of work Through information and education increase the staff s knowledge about negative effects of alcohol and drugs Through a good physical and psychosocial working environment reduce the risk of exclusion due to drug problems Through supporting actions contribute to rehabilitation and re-adaptation to work Achieve greater openness about addiction to drugs and more long-term and effective treatment Safety Our Policy for Road Safety We, in DSV Road AB, shall work for improved road safety for transports directly or indirectly controlled by us. Our drivers and employees must show consideration for fellow road-users, set a good example on the roads and act as an ambassador for DSV Road. This means among other things that Laws and regulations must be followed A safe distance is kept from vehicles in front Hands free is used when using mobile phone during transport Special attention is paid to children and other road-users at risk 10(26)
Ethics Partners The main part of the transports is carried out by subcontractors. We have a mutual commitment to the customers. It is of course essential for the supplier that DSV is a reliable partner, and our aim is to have long term relations with our subcontractors. In 2012 DSV s Supplier Code of Conduct were launched. The Supplier Code of Conduct describes what DSV considers to be appropriate business conduct of its suppliers and hence the conduct and behaviour that DSV expects from its Suppliers when they provide service or supply products to DSV. Social Responsibility When DSV in 2009 signed UN s Global Compact- an initiative launched by Kofi Annan in 2000 to support social and environmental responsibility with international companies- we joined a global, respected and accepted frame in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. We encourage our partners to support The Global Compact. Mutual values joining us together are important in a large company such as DSV, and we are convinced that an approach to these issues also affects our quality and job satisfaction. A global Whistle-blower Programme was launched across the DSV Group in The Programme consists of a hotline and a website through which employees, managers and Board members can report any situation, events and circumstances that seem wrong or are direct violations of the DSV policies and guidelines.. 11(26)
Excerpt from Code of Human and Labour Rights of the DSV Group Human Rights DSV supports and wishes to comply with internationally proclaimed human rights. Non-discrimination and Equal Opportunities DSV recognises and supports equal human rights and is against discrimination and differential treatment in employment and working conditions, whether based on race or gender, or sexual, religious or political orientation of ethnical or social background. Freedom of Association and Right to Collective Bargaining DSV recognises employees right to join a union and to collective bargaining. DSV supports a constructive dialogue between employer and employee. Forced Labour DSV is against all kinds of forced employment and working conditions. Child Labour DSV does not employ children and recognises international standards of minimum age for children. Employment Conditions Employees of DSV must receive a letter of confirmation of their employment conditions if so required by national legislation. Remuneration The remuneration of DSV employees meets or exceeds statutory or agreed national industry minimum standards. Working Hours DSV complies with current legislation and agreed standards relating to employee working hours. 12(26)
Sustainable Development Sustainable development has the following three basic foundations; economy, environment and social matters. As a company it is about always trying to act cost-efficiently with environmental and social responsibility. The definition sustainable development was formulated already in 1987 in the Brundtland report (UN s report Our Common Future ). The development should meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability for future generation to meet their own needs DSV supports this definition and has expressed its responsibility for the global impact caused by the company. We apply the precautionary principle including risk assessment, cargo securing and safety advisors for dangerous goods and liability insurances. Sustainable Transport and Logistics Systems DSV is committed to offering sustainable transport and logistics systems which result in the lowest possible depletion of resources and strain on the environment. Therefore, the business concept of DSV is constantly being developed and improved so that the products and services of the Group always reflect our environmental considerations. Complying with Public Authority Requirements DSV will lead an open and constructive dialogue with authorities, shareholders, customers, suppliers, employees and other stakeholders about the environmental and safety conditions related to the activities of the Group. DSV has a clear conception of its responsibility so that we comply with public authority requirements at all times. 13(26)
Code of Environmental Behaviour of the DSV Group Economic growth and transport are closely related. Globalisation has been driven forward by increased trade, and the competitiveness of enterprises highly depends on reliable and efficient transports.. Transport is therefore necessary for the industrialised society and today s living standards and simply a condition for growth and prosperity throughout the world. However, this development affects the environment and represents an important challenge to the transport industry. As one of the largest and leading providers of transport and logistics services, DSV feels committed to take on its share of the responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of the transport industry. DSV is a freight forwarding and logistics company and relies almost exclusively on subcontractors when it comes to the physical transportation of customer s goods. To reduce the negative impact on the environment, DSV has adopted policies on transport and logistics systems, legal compliances and selection of suppliers. Environment Our Policy DSV will through an active and long-term environment work contribute to a sustainable development, care for the environment and continues to make our transport and logistics systems more efficient. This means that we will: Develop our production to minimize the impact on the environment, use our resources in the best possible way and integrate environmental responsibility at all stages Give our employees possibility to take the impact on the environment into consideration in their daily work. Act together with customers, suppliers, authorities and other interested parties to reduce the strain on the environment Work for continuous improvement and prevent pollution of air, water and ground. Look upon environmental demands in laws, regulations and instructions as a minimum 14(26)
Our Environmental Goals 15(26)
High load capacity efficiency an effective way to reduce the impact on the environment Our skilled traffic managers work continuously to maximize available capacity. The goal is maximum usage of capacity with as little empty driving as possible. By optimizing the transport chains economically and environmentally, our customer s emissions are reduced. We monitor our load capacity efficiency in order to take actions. Electronic information about goods and vehicles gives us better possibilities to actively work for improvement. Load capacity efficiency Traffic Goal export Outcome export Goal import Outcome import Austria 96 % 95.1 % 99 % 95.9 % Belgium 99 % 97.7 % 99 % 95.4 % Byelorussia 100 % 100 % 100 % 100 % Czech Rep. 94 % 95 % 94 % 94.8 % Denmark 96 % 91.6 % 89 % 93.7% Estonia 95 % 94.9 % 96 % 94.1 % Finland 98 % % 88 % % France 99 % 96.6 % 99 % 98.5 % Germany 98 % 96.8 % 98 % 97.9 % Holland 99 % 97.1 % 99 % 99 % Hungary 94 % 93,5% 97% 94.9 % Italy 99 % 97.7 % 100 % 92.6 % Latvia 95 % 96,2 % 97 % 100 % Lithuania 97 % 97.7 % 95 % 95.6 % Norway 97 % % 90 % 73-92% Poland 94 % 94.5 % 96 % 94.6 % Portugal 94 % 95.3 % 100 % 100 % Russia 100 % 100 % 100 % 100 % Switzerland 98 % 95.2 % 97 % 97.5 % Slovakia 94 % 93.4 % 100 % 94.7% Spain 97 % 98.1 % 100 % 100 % Turkey 97 % 95 % 96 % 97.5 % UK/Ireland % % 95.5 % 100 % The Ukraine 100 % 100 % The easiest, and at the same time most efficient way to save the environment is to coordinate and simplify the flow. DSV can take care of the entire transport chain, from transport of your goods on road, railway, sea or air to storage and warehousing, including logistic solutions. It cannot be easier. Using effective tyres is another way to save fuel. The tyres come up to about 20 % of the fuel consumption of the vehicle. In November 2012 a compulsory energy marking of tyres came into force. This new marking indicates the quality of the tyre when it comes to fuel efficiency, road safety and traffic noise and will contribute to reduced usage of fossil fuels and reduced emissions of carbon dioxide. There are also on-going projects in the rubber industry with renewable raw materials. 16(26)

DSV ECO DSV ECO a product for customers being flexible when it comes to picking up and delivery of goods and at the same time reducing the climate impact. DSV ECO flexibility for the environment and the economy. DSV ECO is offered to part loads and full load to reduced price. DSV ECO means that you give us up to five days flexibility to pick up the goods. These days make it possible for us to plan for your goods to match in our transport flows. As soon as the goods fit into our daily puzzle, the customer will be informed and the goods will be picked up. After that delivery follows normal transport plans and schedules, By maximizing load capacity we do not only reduce the strain on the climate from transport we also reduce the costs, we share this cost reduction and reduce the ordinary price. The number of ECO-consignments continued to increase in 2012, we are however not content, and keep on trying to influence our customers to book the ECO-product. 18(26)

New Logistics Centre in Scania in Compliance with GreenBuildingstandard The new establishment in Landskrona is DSV s largest premises in Sweden. The premises have highest security and built in compliance with GreenBuildingstandard. We count on reduced usage of energy by at least 25 % and consequently also reduced environmental impact. DSV Solution moved in to the 55,000 square metre large logistics site already in the summer. Then in December we had the big move when DSV Road and DSV Air & Sea moved its production from Helsingborg and Malmö to Landskrona. The location near the motorway has considerably shortened the distance the trucks have to drive to load and unload in terminal and warehouse. The location near the railway station and a bus stop close to the premises has made it easier for the staff to use public transport. 20(26)
Energy is needed to produce transport and logistics services. We only use EPD-certified wind energy. All new establishments are built in compliance with GreenBuildingStandard. We analyse the consumption to be energy efficient in all areas. All these measures together contribute to reduced emissions from our premises CO 2 -emissions from premises 1,350 tonnes 1,210 tonnes A number of concrete measures have been taken to reduce usage. For example low energy lighting, reduced number of lighting, motion sensors, reduced temperature at logistic centres, saving on computers and other equipment, routines to keep gates closed. Used computer-equipment is anonymized, erased and sold. By reusing instead of recycling our environmental impact has been reduced by 866 kilos CO 2. We strive to reduce the strain on the environment from all our operations and that includes the administrative work even though our greatest impact does not come from this part of our operations. All possibilities to reduce the impact must be taken into consideration. Every paper not used is a small contribution to the environment. By handling bookings, information and services electronically not only the strain on the environment is reduced, but also the quality and security of the information is improved. EDI-transmission of documents, usage of e-invoice and electronic pay slips reduces the usage of paper and the climate impact. Usage of sets (number) ,328,400 1,394, , ,600 A close dialogue with suppliers of paper and printings makes it possible for us to make use of the latest improvements. 21(26)
Our Climate Impact Our greatest impact on the climate comes from transport emissions for our customers. Heating, electricity and business travel represent a small part of the emissions. Transports are a prerequisite for the economic and social development, but at the same time a threat to our environment and welfare. The transport sector contributes to a varied extent in almost all environmental problems such as noise disturbance, unhealthy air, acidification, overfeeding and increased greenhouse effect. Vast areas are used for roads and other infrastructure. Oil spill, accidents and overcrowded roads are other negative effects. Contribute to the Greenhouse Effect and affect the climate The burning of fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel contributes to the greenhouse effect and has a negative impact on the climate. The Swedish transport system is today depending on fossil fuels. To be able to reduce the climate impact from the transport sector the vehicles must be more energy efficient and the share of vehicles driven with renewable fuels must increase. Reduced consumption is a prerequisite for reduced emissions of carbon dioxide. Overfeeding of sea and water Overfeeding is primarily caused by to high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in ground and water. The main part of the nitrogen emission comes from traffic, and road traffic and shipping are the main sources. Acidification of ground and water Acidification of ground and water is primarily caused by the emissions of sulphur dioxide. A great part of the acid pollution in Sweden comes from international shipping, which still uses fuels with high grade of sulphur and insufficient nitrogen purification. Traffic Noise irritates and disturbs Noise is defined as disturbing sound and influences our daily life. Physically there is no difference between sound and noise. What we consider as unwanted sound varies between different people and time of the day and influences our health and quality of life. Traffic noise is a big problem for the environment and the health, and the kind of noise that disturbs most people. A Challenge One of the greatest challenges for the climate work is to make the transports environmentally friendly and climate neutral. These problems cannot be solved on national level, they need international approach. In EU the mutual work to solve the transport sector s environmental problem high on the agenda. Increased awareness and responsibility have brought on projects and development to reduce the negative effects. The decreasing acidification of Swedish water and woodlands is a good example of international agreements and persisting work giving positive effects. To secure good health and unspoilt eco-system the emissions must be further reduced. With increasing traffic there are problems such as carbon dioxide emissions, noise disturbance and land exploitation. 22(26)
DSV ROAD AB CO 2 emissions in 2012 CO 2 (carbon dioxide) tonnes - 3,4 kilos per 100 kilo effective weight We continuously work to make our transports more efficient by improved load capacity efficiency, less empty driving, improved vehicle fleet and by trying to make our customers be more flexible when it comes to picking up and delivery of goods. An increased usage of combi transports also contributes to reduced environmental impact. Intermodal transports must be regarded as a complement to conventional transports. The railway plays no doubt an important role; the capacity of the railway should however not be overrated. It is far from always that the railway competes for the same goods. The problems with the road transports can therefore only partly be solved by the railway. DSV SOLUTIONS AB Solution s possibilities to influence the transports to and from the logistic centres are limited. Our customer s agreements and bookings are our guidelines, and we work to establish long term partnerships with our customers. In case DSV Road is used, the emissions are included under DSV Road above. 23(26)
DSV AIR & SEA AB CO 2 emissions in 2012 CO 2 (carbon dioxide) tonnes 548 kilos per 100 kilo effective weight The total environmental impact from flying is today relatively small. Flying is however growing, and there is a risk that the negative climate impact in the long run will increase strongly. It is therefore important to take measures nationally as well as globally to stop this negative trend. There is an intensive work to reduce fuel consumption, including improved engines, shorter and more efficient routes, reduced waiting times in the air and on the ground and improved routines at take-off and landing. There have also been tests with alternative more sustainable fuels. CO 2 emissions in 2012 CO 2 (carbon dioxide) tonnes 11,5 kilos per 100 kilo effective weight About 90 per cent of all transports are ocean transport. The shipping industry s development is strongly connected to the growth in the world economy and shipping is the most effective way to transport large volumes. Most regulations aiming to solve the problems with emissions from the shipping industry are basically international. The shipping industry is a source of emissions of sulphur, nitric oxide and carbon dioxide. Spreading of foreign organism with the ballast water as well as by bio fouling (growth on hull) is another negative impact. 24(26)
Transports of Hazardous Goods Road In total about 240,000 tonnes hazardous goods were transported Class 3 (inflammable) dominated No accidents has been reported to the Swedish Contingencies Agencies (Myndigheten för Samhällsskydd och Beredskap) Air & Sea Solutions Nothing to report to the Swedish Contingencies Agency Nothing to report to the Swedish Contingencies Agency We apply the precautionary principle. Training and information among the staff as well as among the subcontractors is part of the work to reduce and eliminate the risks. Cooperation with local authorities is another part of this work. Responsibility as well as routines for work with hazardous goods is documented in our management system The work with dangerous goods is managed by safety advisors and local coordinators. During this year, as well as the year before, a number of check-ups of subcontractors carrying dangerous goods we carried out. The checks focused on equipment and permits. A number of basic and repetition trainings in ADR1.3 and IMDG 1.3 were carried out Dangerous Goods Policy for DSV Road AB A professional acting shall assure that customers, authorities and the public can have confidence in DSV Road s handling of dangerous goods. A professional acting includes: To comply with laws and regulations To prevent damage on humans, environment and property A high level of knowledge among the staff Only trained personnel handle dangerous goods To be able to assist customers with advice and directions To continuously improve and follow the development To place demands on subcontractors In order to accomplish this, the work with dangerous goods is managed by our safety advisors. Documented routines, instructions and training plans for dangerous goods are an integrated part of the management system. 25(26)
