2 Sea Data Packages NX Sea Data Packages Sea Data Set The NX Sea Data Set 1 combines a Sea Data multifunction instrument, WSI connection box and a 43mm log and temperature transducer and a 43mm depth transducer. This is ideal for the user who prefers to use two transducers or who already has the necessary thru hull fittings in the hull. With the WSI connection box collecting and processing the data that it receives from the two transducers, the Sea Data instrument can be set to display a combination of the following; Speed Distance run Depth Water temperature Start timer Deep / shallow alarms Sea Data Set 1 with Triducer WSI Connection Box The Wireless Server Interface (WSI) Connection Box forms the core of the NX instrumentation system; the central point at which all the data collected from the transducers is processed and then sent down a single cable to the Sea Data and, if installed, Wind Instrument displays. NX Triducer for Speed, Depth and Temperature The latest in thru-hull transducers, the Triducer requires only a single aperture in the hull to collect three separate sets of data; speed, depth and water temperature. The single fitting reduces drag through the water, saves on maintenance, and maximises the integrity of the hull. The Triducer is made from glass-filled polyester for strength and can be retracted to reduce fouling when at rest. A dummy plug is supplied for fitting when not used for long periods. Sea Data Log with 43mm Log/Speed Transducer Sea Data Log with 52mm Log/Speed Transducer Log Transducers The Log Transducer measures boat speed, distance and water temperature. The unique paddle wheel construction provides very accurate data. Retractable thru-hull transducer for easy cleaning of paddle wheel. Dummy plug included. The Log transducer is available in two dimensions, 43mm and 52mm diameter. The 52mm transducer has a built in lock valve to prevent water leakage when cleaning the paddle wheel. Sea Data Log Combi with Transom Mount Transducer NX Combitransducer This transom mounted transducer measures depth, boat speed and water temperature ideal for small boats and RIBs that prefer not to use thru-hull transducers and prefer a single transducer solution. Easy to attach and detach, the Combitransducer is made from glass-filled polyester for strength and durability. 2

3 Start Packs Wireless Stand Alone NX Wind System Wind Instrument The NX Wind Instrument brings a new layer of functionality to the NX instrumentation system, allowing both the digital and analog display of wind data on a single unit. In large, clear digits the Wind Instrument displays apparent wind speed and angle, and true wind speed and angle as calculated by the WSI, while at the same time showing the same information in analog format for instant appraisal by helmsman and navigator. Stylishly designed and built to withstand the toughest marine environments, the Wind Instrument enables the Nexus NX to demonstrate its full potential as a versatile capable instrumentation system. WSI Connection Box The Wireless Server Interface (WSI) Connection Box forms the core of the NX instrumentation system; the central point at which all the data collected from the transducers is processed and then sent down a single cable to the Sea Data and, if installed, Wind Instrument displays. Among its many functions, the WSI combines boat speed and apparent wind speed & angle, to calculate the true wind speed & angle. The WSI communicates directly with the wireless Wind Transducer via a unique radio pairing, and the slim and compact box is quick and simple to install. Wireless Wind transducer The twin-fin wireless wind transducer brings all the advantages of wireless instrumentation to the cruising sailor. Gone are the complications and aesthetic issues of running wiring from the top of the mast down to the chart table. Instead, the wind transducer establishes a unique pairing using radio with the WSI connection box that forms the core of the NX instrumentation system, ensuring that each transducer / server pairing is distinct from every other. The information is then fed from the WSI connection box to both the NX Sea Data and Wind Instrument. The twin fin design makes this a highly stable and accurate wind transducer. The internal batteries are continuously charged by a small solar panel mounted on the transducer arm, have a life of around three to four years, and are easily replaced. Start Pack The NX start pack 3 gives the user a comprehensive NX system to the user who requires continuous data on the wind conditions at the same time as he monitors a variety of other data. The start pack provides both a Sea Data multifunction instrument and an NX wind instrument, enabling the user to monitor both the wind conditions and a selection of other data such as speed or depth at the same time. The WSI connection box gathers and processes all the information collected from the transducers and then transmits it via a single cable to the Sea Data instrument and then to the Wind Instrument. 6 Displays NX2 Analog Displays NX Displays NX Sea Data Instrument NX Wind Instrument Sea Data Instrument The Sea Data can be connected directly to 43mm and 52mm speed and depth transducers, while additional functionality is provided by connection to the WSI connection box, a compact server that acts as the data hub for log, depth, temp and wind transducers and sends the information in real time to the Sea Data by a single cable. With just the log and depth transducers connected the Sea Data will display speed, depth and distance run, plus water temperature where the transducer allows. It also incorporates a start timer, and deep and shallow water alarms. With the addition of a wind transducer the highly versatile Sea Data will also display apparent wind angle and speed, and true wind angle and speed. Analog Displays Wind Instrument The NX Wind Instrument brings a new layer of functionality to the NX instrumentation system, allowing both the digital and analogue display of wind data on a single unit. In large, clear digits the Wind Instrument displays apparent wind speed and angle, and true wind speed and angle as calculated by the WSI, while at the same time showing the same information in analogue format for instant appraisal by helmsman and navigator. NX2 Wind The NX2 analog Wind angle instrument displays true or apparent wind angle. Fields are clearly marked in red and green allowing for superior readability, especially during night navigation. The scale and display are illuminated. NX2 Steer Pilot This instrument relays the NX2 server calculations to the system, enabling you to quickly and easily set an exact course to steer towards your destination. You can select from several settings: Compass steering Wind steering Apparent wind angle for wind shifts Waypoint steering Bearing to waypoint (BTW) Course to steer (CTS) including Set and Drift NX2 Rudder Angle Indicator Together with Nexus Autopilot, a rudder position instrument can be used to give precise information about the rudder angle. A great benefit, for sail racing and manoeuvring in harbors. NX2 GPS Course NX2 GPS Course displays heading over ground from a GPS receiver, allowing for superior readability and heading presentation. A sensitive 360 needle gives you an accurate and stable compass heading. NX2 GPS Speed The NX2 GPS Speed repeaters give easy on the eye readings of boat speed. Two scales are available: 0-16 knots for sailboats NX2 Depth The Depth instrument gives an easy to read display, of the true depth in metres or feet. The logarithmic scales show shallower sections more clearly. The scale reads 0-600m. 6

7 Digital Displays NX2 Multi Control This is the most versatile NX2 instrument! With over 40 different functions which are presented on 4 pages (digits are 15% larger then classic Nexus) from the server; the Multi Control can display the functions needed whether Navigating, Sail Racing, Fishing or just having FUN. The unique Copy and Paste function in the Multi Control Display will allow you to customize the display to show the information you need. Every Multi Control runs on the Bus independently of each other allowing for uninterrupted data flow. You will not need dedicated displays to get the data you need. The Multi-Control and Server is included in the Instrument Package Options on page 4 & 5. In addition to the Instrument Package options, feel free, to add as many displays as you need. It really is up to your personal preference as to how you customize your system. NX2 Multi XL Control The Multi XL is an enlarged version of the Multi Control instrument with 40 mm (1.6 ) clearly readable digits. The large digits allow this instrument to be mounted far away from the steering position and still be seen clearly. It is for this reason the push buttons on the Multi XL have been removed. This instrument is fully operated from either the Multi Control or Remote Control instrument. The high contrast, low multiplexed LCD provides excellent readability in bright sunlight as well \as dims for night navigation. The benefit of the customized main and sub-functions are virtually an unlimited number of user-directed combinations for displaying the NX2 information. NX2 Digital Displays NX2 Wind Data It s totally different! With the New NX2 Wind Data display you can view up to 5 individual data references at one time. Nexus incorporates a large Digalogue fan to represent the boat s apparent wind angle while the single blade below will always show true wind angle. Capable of storing up to 399 waypoints and 25 routes, it can be used either as a standalone unit or integrated into the NEXUS Network. The instrument and antenna are also available separately. An important feature is the ability of the NEXUS GPS Navigator to communicate with other navigators via its NMEA input/output, allowing it to be used either as a repeater navigator or as a navigator in a system with other NMEA compatible Loran/ Decca GPS navigators. The GPS Navigator is simple to use and can be installed above and/ or below deck. NX2 Multi Remote NX2 Multi Control also comes as a full functional Remote. This small hand held remote is capable of controlling the NX2 Network System and the NX2 Autopilot. 7

9 / Transducers NX2 / NXR Transducers NX2 Compass Transducer Low weight fluid damped compass in compact size allows mounting in cramped areas. It can be flush mounted. The compass is autodeviated from the Multi Control instrument. The ideal powerboat compass. MRC Box MRC box (Mast Rotation Compensation) Enables compensation for wind angle on rotating masts. Two compass transducers are required, one on the mast (rotating) and one on the boat (fixed). The MRC box compares the bearings from the two compasses and sends the information to the Wind Data instrument where the compensation is made. You can use an already installed NX2 compass transducer. NX2 GPS Antenna The compact and water resistant GPS antenna is suitable for a wide range of applications. The parallel GPS receiver is prepared for reception of differential correction data in accordance with RTCM SC-104. It can be mounted directly on the deck, on a pulpit or on a mast using standard mounts. It can be connected directly to NMEA compatible navigation equipment such as PC or Radar. NX2 / NXR Transducers NXR HPC Compass The HPC Compass uses the latest materials and precision engineering techniques to give an accuracy of + / - 1 to a maximum heel of 60. It features a 6-axis configuration that also incorporates heel and pitch, giving exceptional results for data such as apparent wind angle, true wind angle and the true wind direction even when the boat is at a substantial angle of heel. The HPC Compass comes with a Nexus network bus port and an NMEA 0183 output port. This instrument allows the user to access any of the digital information provided by the NEXUS Network, and in any combination. The display shows the data in clear, easy to read digits, with both primary and secondary readouts. Built to withstand the toughest conditions, it also allows the user to access a comprehensive range of information at the press of a button via a built-in remote control complete with four dedicated preset buttons that allows the selection of up to 10 favourite settings. The result is that the helmsman or navigator can pre-programme a series of preferred data combinations suited to different points of sailing or particular locations, thereby saving valuable time in adjusting instruments at critical moments. The result of a long process of customer consultation the XLR features 63.5 mm (2.5 inch) digits, which have been proven as the ideal size for large racing yachts. Their first class readability is further enhanced by their crisp presentation. Fully programmable from the navigation workstation, the XLR displays incorporate a host of new features designed to maximize their utility to the Grand Prix racing crew. These stylish and rugged displays are nitrogen filled and fully waterproof, capable of withstanding extended, open ocean conditions. Despite their size they weigh just 300 g each NXR Steer Pilot The steer pilot is a highly innovative instrument that has proven its value out on the racecourse many times since it was first introduced as part of the NX2 system in Put in simple terms, this invaluable instrument continuously displays to the helmsman the direction in which he should be steering in order to reach a given point in the fastest and most efficient way. It does this by combining data from the compass, speed transducer and GPS and when required analyses it against a boat s technical specification, most commonly the polars, to determine the best route. When the helmsman deviates from that route the needle instantly moves away from the centre line, indicating in the clearest way possible the direction and extent of that deviation. The system updates five times per second, ensuring that there is no time lag between the error occurring and the information being transmitted to the helmsman. Using the NXR steer pilot quickly becomes second nature to the helmsman, and will hold his concentration for extended periods without becoming tiring or straining his vision. Meanwhile the navigator can update the parameters at the navigation workstation at any time and the new optimum course will instantly be indicated on the instrument without any need for the verbal transmission of complex instructions. 12 Autopilot Package Options NX2 Autopilot Package Options Accuracy, high performance and simplicity of use are key features of the NX2 Autopilot, specifically designed for sail and power boats from feet. Whether the need is for improved navigational accuracy, minimized fuel consumption or simply more enjoyable yachting, the NX2 Autopilot provides precision steering under all sea conditions. Factory default settings and automatic calibration allow easy operation with minimal operator input, yet user adjustable settings make it possible to fine tune it for every vessel. Use it as a standalone autopilot or connect it to the NEXUS Network to have the ultimate in Instrument/Autopilot integration. The Autopilot system consists of five components: 1. 13 Autopilot Package Options 5. Drive Unit The Drive Units are specifically designed for autopilot use to give high mechanic and hydraulic accuracy with a long lifecycle. It is designed for low internal leakage to give faster and more accurate steering with low power consumption. In addition, they offer extreme rudder precision via variable motor speed and soft start/stop. Further, the pumpsets are very quiet making them very popular with sail boat owners. NEXUS offer two types of hydraulic drive units; the integrated linear drive or Pumpset with Linear Drive combination for vessels with mechanical steering. 16 Four Steps in Choosing a Compass 1. What kind of boat will the compass be used on? The main differences between sailboat compasses and powerboat compasses are the damping characteristics and the heeling angle limit. Powerboat compasses usually have fixed lubber lines in order to maintain best dynamic operation. Sailboat compasses will have gimballed lubber lines and a greater heeling angle limit. 2. What size is the boat? The further the compass will be from the helmsman, the larger the compass you should have. If your boat is greater than 8 meters (approximately 26 feet), consider a 100 Series or larger capsule. ComNav compass models are named for the apparent size of the compass card. For example, the compass card on a 70 Series compass has an apparent size of 70mm (2 3/4 ) while the 125 Series has an apparent size of 125mm (4.9 ). We say apparent size since the dome and fluid inside the compass magnify the actual card size. 3. Where will the compass be mounted? There is a Comnav compass for every mounting need. Many series are available in different mounting styles: Bulkhead, Flush-mount, Overhead, On the Mast, or Bracket-mount. All compass models are designed to eliminate unnecessary drilling during installation. Regardless of mounting type, your compass should be positioned where it can easily be read from the helm, even in darkness when illuminated. Position the compass as far away as possible from iron objects or other magnetic sources such as loud speakers, windshield wiper motors, etc. 4. What kind of compensators do you need? Deviation or soft iron compensators are a must on steel-hulled vessels. However, magnetic disturbances will be found on almost every boat regardless of construction material. For this reason ComNav recommends the use of compensators for all compass applications where the compass will be used for navigation. Most of the various compass models are available with built-in compensators. Remember that the distance to the source of interference is more critical than the strength of it. Features to look for in a compass Look for these important features found on ComNav compasses: Magnetic Zones The earth s magnetic field changes in intensity depending on geographic location. This varying field causes a compass card to tilt away from the horizontal. To offset this, counterweights are placed on the compass card so that it balances horizontally. This allows the compass card to swing smoothly rather than dragging on the top or bottom of the compass capsule. ComNav compasses are balanced to operate in one of three magnetic regions; MN, ME, and MS. Use of a compass outside its region can effect its ability to give an accurate heading; in extreme cases the compass may stick.
