This European Technical Approval is issued by VTT Expert Services Ltd in accordance with: Council Directive 89/106/EEC of 21 December 1988 on the approximation of laws, regulations and administrative provisions of Member States relating to construction products 1, modified by Council Directive 93/68/EEC 2 and Regulation (EC) N 1882/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council 3 ; Laki rakennustuotteiden hyväksynnästä (230/2003) luvut 3 ja 10, Ympäristöministeriön asetus rakennustuotteiden hyväksynnästä 3 sekä Ympäristöministeriön antama valtuutuspäätös (YM19/629/2009). VTT Expert Services Ltd is authorized to check whether the provisions of this European Technical Approval are met. Checking may take place in the manufacturing plant. Nevertheless, the responsibility for the conformity of the products to the European Technical Approval and for their fitness for the intended use remains with the holder of the European Technical Approval. 3. This European Technical Approval is not to be transferred to manufacturers or agents of manufacturer other than those indicated on page 1, or manufacturing plants other than those indicated on page This European Technical Approval may be withdrawn by VTT Expert Services Ltd pursuant to information by the Commission according to Article 5(1) of Council Directive 89/106/EEC. 5. Reproduction of this European Technical Approval including transmission by electronic means shall be in full. 4 Page 4 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF THE EUROPEAN TECHNICAL APPROVAL 1 Definition of product and intended use 1.1 Definition of the construction product Luoman log cabins are a predesigned log building kits prepared in the factory for each individual house, and delivered as a package to be assembled on site. There are about 300 standard models. The kits covered by this ETA consist of the main building parts such as walls, suspended floors and roof structures described in the ETA. The main load-bearing construction of the building kits is made of a log frame. The log frame may contain metal parts as stiffening rods and tubes, screw feet as well as connectors and fixings. The walls of the building kit are mainly made of massive logs.. The walls may be additionally insulated but this is not covered by the definition of the product. The load-bearing horizontal constructions are usually made of timber beams. The columns or studs may be of logs or sawn timber. The basic design of the assembled components as well as the material and component specifications are shown in Annexes 1 and 2. Detailed design specifications including connections between the components and assembly are shown in the supporting document Annex 2, Luoman log cabin building kit, Supplement to ETA no.0y/nnnn. Annex 2 is a formal part of the ETA and the valid version of the document is the latest version filed by VTT. The kits covered by this ETA usually contain the log frame and the timber parts needed, windows and doors and bituminous roofing as well as fixings. Steel or concrete tile roofing may be used but they are not part of the kit. Thermal insulation, air and moisture control layers, linings, claddings, other roofing materials may be additionally delivered. The timber parts are usually prefabricated, but some parts may be delivered in falling lengths. The extension of the delivery varies according to the option chosen by the customer and country of destination. No gasket is used between the logs; in the corners no sealing strips are used. Complementary parts like substructure, surface coverings, stairs, internal fittings, technical installations for water, heating, ventilation, electricity and other components necessary to form completed works are not a part of this approval. This includes also supplementary constructions like such load-bearing constructions and such compartment walls not specified in this ETA. More detailed information of the standard components, materials and dimensions are given in Annex 1. Typical solutions are presented in Annex 2, Supporting drawings. 1.2 Intended use The kits are intended mainly to be used as holiday cottages, sheds or storage buildings. Other possible uses are as residential buildings, site offices, accommodation houses or hobby rooms and corresponding when the performance requirements are applicable. The number of storeys is in general one, possibly also a loft. The kits are intended to be placed on all types of substructure such as concrete slab on ground, basement made of blocks of lightweight aggregate concrete, or pillars, or treated timber. The building kits are suitable for various climatic conditions. For timber frame parts as suspended base floors, roofs and parts with internal insulation and vapour barrier the moisture flow shall be from inside out for the most time of the year. Vapour barrier can be replaced by an

5 Page 5 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 air control layer, if the climatic conditions provide for that e.g. if the house were cooled during the summer time. The kit should not be used in conditions with heavy wind and driving rain without protective measures (as special gaskets) for uses with higher demands of water and air tightness. The wood components are not treated for use in areas with termite attacks. For such an application, chemical treatment may be done according to the rules valid on the building site. These kinds of treatment are not a part of this approval. The provisions made in this European Technical Approval are based on an assumed intended working life of the kit of 25 years for all parts provided the kit is subject to appropriate use and maintenance Characteristics of product and methods of verification ER 1 Mechanical resistance and stability In general, the kits are delivered according to the pre-design of the manufacturer. External and internal log walls The strength class of the logs is C18. Limitations of the dimensions with regard vertical loads of the log walls are given in the table below: Wall log thickness mm Maximum wall length between corners mm Maximum side wall height mm Laminated It is recommended that if the snow load on the roof exceeds 1 kn/m², snow is removed from the roof. Resistance against horizontal loads is according to experience sufficient for the intended purpose. No quantified values exist (NPD). 5 This means that it is expected that when this working life has elapsed, the real working life may be, in normal use conditions, considerably longer without major degradation affecting the essential requirements of the works. The indications given as to the working life of a building kit cannot be interpreted as a guarantee given by the producer or the approval body. They should only be regarded as a means for the specifiers to choose the appropriate criteria for building kits in relation to the expected, economically reasonable working life of the works.

6 Page 6 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 Suspended floors Floor construction of Luoman log cabins is made of flooring boards 16 x 87 mm, strength class C18. Flooring boards are supported by floor joists, in general 36 x 60 mm, maximum spacing 400 mm, strength class C18. For larger cabins, floor joists 48 x 98, strength class C18 are used. The joists are specified separately for each standard kit. Resistance against horizontal loads is according to experience sufficient for the intended purpose. No quantified values exist (NPD). Thickness of the flooring boards is not sufficient for uses where the floor load is heavy. It is not recommended that the cabins are used in such conditions where the distance of the floor to ground exceeds 300 mm. Roof structures Roof construction of Luoman log cabins is made of roofing boards 16 x 87 mm, strength class C18. Roofing boards are supported by ridge purlin 40 x 135 mm and additional purlins 40 x 145 mm, maximum spacing 1200 mm, strength class C18. Resistance against horizontal loads is according to experience sufficient for the intended purpose. No quantified values exist (NPD). Finger joints Load-bearing timber parts may have finger joints. The strength of the finger joints corresponds to the strength class of the jointed part. Characteristic resistance of anchorage The Luoman log cabin building itself is a light building that may need to have anchorage to the substructure. Anchorage is dealt with as a part of design of works. The roofing constructions will be anchored with the walls by nailing, screws, steel strap, ordinary nailing plates or sliding fixings specified by the manufacturer. The type and characteristic resistance of the anchorage depends of the amount of fasteners according to the specific design of the kit. Resistance against seismic actions No performance is determined for resistance against seismic actions (NPD). Resistance to wind load of windows and doors No performance is determined for resistance against wind loads for windows or doors (NPD). ER 2 Safety in case of fire Reaction to fire The classification of the main materials with regard to reaction to fire is given in Annex 1.

7 Page 7 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 For roofing, reaction to fire is NPD. 6 Resistance to fire NPD. External fire performance of roof coverings For bituminous roofing materials the external fire performance of roof covering is BROOF(t2). ER 3 Hygiene, health and environment Vapour permeability and moisture resistance Vapour permeability and moisture resistance of the external envelope have been assessed to fulfil the common requirements for such climatic conditions, where the tendency of moisture flow is from inside out for the most time of the year, as in Northern part of Europe. If the kit will be used in a building that is intended to be cooled during summertime, the function of the envelope shall be separately assessed with regard to moisture diffusion and condensation as a part of the design of works. Vapour barrier can be replaced by an air control layer if the climatic conditions provide for that. When the log wall has no internal insulation, there is no harm of water vapour in normal use. It is essential for the moisture resistance and durability of the construction that the vapour control layer of the timber frame parts is properly made. The wall structure of saunas and bathrooms will perform adequately provided that the rooms are dried and ventilated well after use. A shower in a bathroom shall be equipped with a shower enclosure. It is recommended to have bathrooms only in cabins that have wall thickness at least 58 mm. Additional insulation made by the customer The manufacturer does not recommend that additional insulation is installed to cabins that have log thickness 34 mm or less. For log thicknesses 45 mm and 58 mm, an air control layer should always be used together with internal additional insulation. If vapour control layer (e.g. 0,2 mm polyethylene foil) is used, the internal additional insulation thickness is not recommended to exceed 50 mm. It is essential for the durability of the construction that the durability of the vapour control layer is verified by an ageing test and that it is properly jointed. Parts with timber frame construction (floors, roofs) Water vapour resistance (sd) of the vapour control layer (e.g. 0,2 mm polyethylene foil) used for the external envelope inside the thermal insulation is 70 m. Water vapour resistance (sd) of the wind barrier layer (10 mm fibreboard) outside the thermal insulation is 0,05 m. Water vapour resistance of the inner vapour control layer of the construction is more than five times the one for the external layer. 6 Reaction of fire of the roofing shall meet the requirements set in the place of use.

8 Page 8 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 For floors with a crawl space, the air control layer can be omitted if the temperature of the crawl space is kept above -5 C. Watertightness No gasket is used between the logs. According to field observations, some water may penetrate through the log corners. It is not recommended that the kit is used when this is not tolerated or in conditions with heavy driving rain. Internal surfaces Requirements concerning the waterproofing of internal surfaces refer to wet areas as bathrooms. Waterproofing of internal surfaces is not a part of the kit. The long term performance of the kit provides that proper waterproofing of internal surfaces is used. Tiles can not be considered to be a sufficient waterproofing in wet areas. E.g. a liquid applied waterproofing system with water vapour resistance (sd) more than 5 m, crack bridging capacity >1,5 mm and durability against alkali exposure shall be used under the tiles. In case of internal log wall, waterproofing cannot be installed. Therefore, a shower in a bathroom with log walls shall be equipped with a shower enclosure. Windows NPD Dangerous substances According to the written declaration of the manufacturer, Lillevilla or Lillebo log building kits does not contain those harmful or dangerous substances listed in EOTA TR 34 dated July The terrace flooring may be made of chemically treated wood. The treatment chemical shall be classified according to standard EN being suitable in use class 3 as defined in standard EN Any chemical wood treatment that may be used shall follow the provisions of the Biocide directive. Such treatment chemicals shall be mentioned in the information accompanying the CE-marking. The treatment itself is outside this approval. In addition to the specific clauses relating to dangerous substances contained in this European Technical Approval, there may be other requirements applicable to the products falling within its scope (e.g. transposed European legislation and national laws, regulations and administrative provisions). In order to meet the provisions of the EU Construction Products Directive, these requirements need also to be complied with, when and where they apply.

9 Page 9 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 ER 4 Safety in use General This approval of a building kit does not comprise the stairs that may be needed for the building 7. The barriers that are part of the building kit will be planned (height, openings railing load) according to the specific requirements valid on the building site. Slipperiness of floor finishes This approval does not comprise the surface material or surface treatment of the floor. Impact resistance A log wall bears the impact caused by falling humans without structural damage. ER 5 Protection against noise NPD ER 6 Energy economy and heat retention Thermal resistance The design value of thermal conductivity to be used in design calculations of the Luoman logs is = 0,12 W/(mK). The thermal transmission coefficient may be calculated according to the nominal thickness of the laminated or planed logs. When additional insulation is used, the thermal transmission coefficient U may be adjusted between 0,52-0,55 W/(m²K). Thicker additional insulation than 50 mm is not recommended; neither is it recommended to use additional insulation in cabins that have log thickness 34 mm or less. The thermal transmission coefficient U of walls normally is so large, that the buildings will not fulfil requirements for permanent residential buildings in all Member States. 7 Stairs will be manufactured individually and if they are prefabricated, they shall bear a CE-marking on their own when obligatory.

Air permeability Air tightness of the log walls is NPD. Air tightness of floors and roofs and corresponding parts with vapour barrier or air control layer is considered to be sufficient. Thermal inertia NPD. Data for thermal inertia calculation of the works will be provided by the manufacturer on request. Aspects of durability, serviceability and identification Aspects of durability When properly assembled, the product will stay against the effects of weather during the intended working life, 25 years. Some components as weather strips of windows and doors and sealants round windows shall be maintained and replaced when needed, according to the recommendations given in the maintenance guide provided by the manufacturer. The guidance given by the manufacturer with regard to ventilation of the attic shall be followed. Without gasket between the logs or in the corners, the log wall persist the effects of weather even without any surface treatment or cladding, if it has the possibility to dry between the wet periods (hazard class 3 as defined in EN 335-1). The initial moisture content (mean value) of the logs at the factory is % for laminated logs. The works shall be designed so, that the logs are able to dry if they have been wetted by rain. The moisture content must not exceed 25 % for a longer period of time. The surface treatment shall be made according to the erection manual. The external log surface of logs thicker than 28 mm must not be treated with such a surface treatment, intended to be aesthetic or protective, that builds up a coating poorly permeable for water vapour.

11 Page 11 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 Chemical treatment of timber parts may be needed in regions where there is a risk of insect attack. All protective treatments shall be made on the building site according to the local provisions. The treatment chemical shall be classified by the chemical manufacturer according to standard EN being suitable in hazard class 3, as defined in standard EN 335-1, with indication of additional biological efficacy required, to conform to local conditions. The kit is not recommended to be used in conditions with heavy driving rain because the provisions for durability are not fulfilled. The fasteners used in the building kit fulfil the requirements for service class 3 as defined in EN (hazard class 3 as defined in EN 335-1). Aspects of serviceability / Floor stiffness Serviceability of a building kit is understood as the ability of the horizontal load bearing structures to resist loads without unacceptable deformation. Under ER1, sufficient information is given so that this may be calculated according to the rules valid on the place of the use. The same applies for floor vibrations. Thickness of the flooring boards is not sufficient for uses where vibrations or excessive deflections of the floor should be avoided. Aspects of serviceability / Settling of the construction Luoman log constructions are mainly settling constructions. The amount of the settling is influenced by the way of installation and the final moisture content of the structures compared with the moisture content during installation. The expected settling is 25 mm/m. Settling is taken into account in design of the structures. The designed settling allowance for e.g. windows and doors has to be followed and the settling must not be prohibited by e.g. such constructions that are not a part of the kit. The adjustments done due to the settling as the ones of the screwed feet and removal of possible adjustment bits shall be made as described in the erection manual. If the erection manual is not followed and the log frame is left loose or the logs get wet during the building time the settling can increase even 5 mm/ log seam and the total settling may exceed the planned one. Identification The log building kit is identified by the CE-marking as described in clause 3.3. Different models are specified by the model name and number and the manufacturer's logotype. VTT keeps a catalogue of the models that are covered by this ETA that is a confidential part of this ETA. There are about 300 standard models that are covered by this ETA. Each package has an individual warranty number. The separate components and materials are identified as being of a generic type or giving a brand name, as described in Annex 1 and specified in the manufacturer's delivery list. The component under a given brand name may be changed to another with corresponding performance.

12 Page 12 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, Evaluation and attestation of conformity and CE marking System of attestation of conformity According to the decision 99/455/EC of the European Commission 8 the system 1 of attestation of conformity applies. This system of attestation of conformity is defined as follows: System 1: Certification of the conformity of the product by an approved certification body on the basis of: (a) Tasks for the manufacturer: (1) factory production control; (2) further testing of samples taken at the factory by the manufacturer in accordance with a prescribed test plan; (b) Tasks for the approved body: (3) initial type-testing of the product; (4) initial inspection of factory and of factory production control; (5) continuous surveillance, assessment and approval of factory production control; 3.1 Responsibilities Tasks of the manufacturer Factory production control The manufacturer shall exercise permanent internal control of production. All the elements, requirements and provisions adopted by the manufacturer shall be documented in a systematic manner in the form of written policies and procedures, including records of results performed. This production control system shall insure that the product is in conformity with this European technical approval. The manufacturer may only use such materials and components as stated in the technical documentation of this European technical approval. Luoman log cabins has a factory production control system that is certified according to ISO 9001 and that addresses the performance of the product. The factory production control shall be in accordance with clause of ETAG 012 and the "Control Plan of Luoman log cabin kits (23 June 2008) relating to the European technical approval ETA 08/0011 issued on June 18, 2013" which is part of the technical documentation of this European technical approval. The "Control Plan" is laid down in the context of the factory production control system operated by the manufacturer and deposited at VTT 9. The results of factory production control shall be recorded and evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Control Plan. 8 Official Journal 178, The "control plan" is a confidential part of the European technical approval and only handed over to the approved body or bodies involved in the procedure of attestation of conformity. 13 Page 13 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, Involving a notified body The manufacturer shall, on the basis of a contract, involve a body which is approved for the tasks referred to in section 3.1 in the field of log building kits in order to undertake the actions laid down in section 3.3. For this purpose, the "control plan" referred to in sections and shall be handed over by the manufacturer to the approved body or bodies involved Testing of samples taken at the factory The tests shall only be carried out on the final product or samples which are representative to the final product. Testing is needed only with regard to the glued load-bearing constructions. The test methods shall correspond to the methods given in the harmonised product standard for glulam and the details of them are given in the control plan Declaration of Conformity When all the criteria of the Conformity Attestation are satisfied the manufacturer shall make a declaration of conformity, stating that the construction product is in conformity with the provisions of the European technical approval ETA - 08/0011 issued on June 18, Tasks of approved bodies Initial assessment of the product The approved body shall perform the initial type-testing of the product, initial inspection of factory and of factory production control, continuous surveillance, assessment and approval of factory production control), in accordance with the provisions laid down in the "Control Plan of Luoman log building kits relating to the European technical approval ETA - 08/0011 issued on June 18, The approved body shall retain the essential points of its actions referred to above and state the results obtained and conclusions drawn in a written report. The approved certification body involved by the manufacturer shall issue an EC certificate of conformity of the product stating the conformity with the provisions of this European technical approval. In cases where the provisions of the European technical approval and its "Control Plan" are no longer fulfilled the certification body shall withdraw the certificate of conformity and inform VTT without delay. 3.2 CE-Marking The CE marking shall be affixed on the packages of the building kit parts or in accompanying commercial documents, e.g. the EC declaration of conformity. The letters "CE" shall be followed by the identification number of the approved certification body and be accompanied by the following additional information:

14 Page 14 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, 2013 the name and address of the producer (legal entity responsible for the manufacture), the last two digits of the year in which the CE marking was affixed, the number of the EC certificate of conformity for the product the number of the European technical approval, the number of the guideline for European technical approval reference to the product as listed in the catalogue kept by VTT, see clause "Identification". 4 Assumptions under which the fitness of the product for the intended use was favourably assessed 4.1 Manufacturing The European technical approval is issued for the product on the basis of agreed information, deposited by VTT, which identifies the product that has been assessed and judged. Changes to the product or production process, which could result in this deposited data/information being incorrect, should be notified to VTT before the changes are introduced. VTT will decide whether or not such changes affect the ETA and consequently the validity of the CE marking on the basis of the ETA and if so whether further assessment or alterations to the ETA, shall be necessary. The components of the Luoman log building kit are assembled in the factory in accordance with the provisions of this ETA as identified during the inspection of the plant by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT). A list of manufacturing places is kept by VTT. 4.2 Installation For each kit, a specific installation manual is included in each package by the manufacturer. The general content of the manual is assessed by the approval body. The manual covers all important aspects related to the site work, such as: erection techniques and necessary equipment temporary bracing completion of joints between kit components (structural fixing, weather sealing etc.) fixing of any wind and seismic anchorage to the substructure and between building parts, if needed additional materials and components applied on the site that are a precondition for the kit to be fit for the intended use protection against weather during erection The completed building (the works) shall comply with the building regulations (regulations on the works) applicable in the Member States in which the building is to be constructed. The procedures foreseen in the Member State for demonstrating compliance with the building regulations shall also be followed by the entity held responsible for this act. An ETA for a log building kit does not amend this process in any way. 4.3 Design and building regulations Design of the works comprises the structural design (see 2, ER1) and, when necessary, also a heat loss calculation or energy calculation of the building. This European technical approval is based on the assumption that this and any other plans needed have been made correctly according to the regulations valid on the building site.

15 Page 15 of European Technical Approval ETA 08/0011, issued on June 18, Requirements set for the substructure This European technical approval does not comprise the substructure of the building. The manufacturer gives instructions for the foundation in the installation manual attached each package. Rough gravel is recommended to be used for smaller cabins. This kind of foundation shall be done so that proper drainage of rain water is achieved. Concrete slab or concrete sole shall be used for larger cabins. When relevant, a foundation plan shall be made according to the local requirements. All timber parts shall be isolated against moisture diffusion from the substructure by a bituminous footing gasket. The tolerances of the finished substructure shall be 5 mm (dimensions and levels). The level of the substructure with regard to the surrounding soil shall be chosen so, that there is no adverse effect on the durability of the construction, which depends on the local conditions 5 Indications to the manufacturer 5.1 Packaging, transport and storage The manufacturer's instructions regarding transport and storage shall be followed. The components and materials shall be protected against harmful wetting during transport and storage. The components must not be lifted or stored in such a way that they will be damaged e.g. because of local stresses due to dead load or excessive bending deformation. 5.2 Use, maintenance and repair The manufacturer shall ensure that proper information for the use of the log building kit is available at each delivery, including general guidance on the basis of this ETA and the specific installation plans and construction details mentioned in clause 4.4. Before the installation the components of the log building kit shall be controlled not to be damaged during transport or storage. Damaged components and materials shall be replaced by sound ones. If there is a need to modify or repair the construction this may be done if allowed for in the installation plans mentioned in clause 4.4. In other case, modifications are allowed only by written consent by the manufacturer of the kit. Section drawings and construction details are presented in Annex 2, Details. In the following, the main constructions, components and materials are described. Those performances are listed that may vary. When CE-marking is done, the last page of this Annex may be used to indicate the performance profile relevant for the eventual kit to be delivered to the customer so that the adequate option is marked. 2 Standard parts of the building kits 2.1 Dimensions of the main parts of the building kits The log frame is made of logs. The thickness of the logs is mm and the height is mm. The maximum length of the logs is usually 12 m and they may contain finger joints. All the sizes given are nominal; minor deviations may be caused by manufacturing technology and fluctuations in moisture content. Internal walls are part of the log frame. The building kit comprises prefabricated timber parts for the suspended floor, intermediate floor and roofing constructions. Thickness of floor constructions varies between mm and the thickness of roofs is 150 mm. The dimensions of the components vary according to the house plan. Log profiles are presented in the figure above. Height of the profiles may vary. The dimensions are nominal.
