4 Examination Instructions 1. Arrange to be at school by 07: Line up outside the examination venue at 07:55 for registration. 3. Do not enter an examination venue until you are instructed to do so. 4. Latecomers must report to Mrs Olsen before they will be allowed into the examination venue. 5. No books, bags, papers etc. will be allowed in the examination venue. 6. Pupils must provide all their own writing equipment, which must be in a clear plastic container. Please ensure that you have specialist equipment for certain subjects, e.g. calculators for Mathematics, or a protractor for Geography. 7. No borrowing of any item will be allowed between pupils during an examination session. 8. Full school uniform must be worn. 9. All pupils must remain in the venue for the duration of their examination. 10. Cell phones and any electronic devices must be switched off and must be placed in the boxes at the front of the Classroom. 11. If a pupil is ill for an examination, a doctor s certificate must be brought to the school on the day that the pupil is absent. Please hand this certificate to Mrs Olsen. 12. At the end of the examination pupils must leave the school quickly and quietly. 13. No pupils may loiter outside examination venues whilst examinations are being written. 5 Preparing for the Examinations Helpful hints Familiarise yourself with your examination timetable. Ensure that you know exactly what work will be covered in each subject, the format of each exam paper, the time allocation, the equipment that may be needed for the examination (e.g. calculator for Mathematics). Get copies of old examination papers and worksheets. By now all your notes should be up to date and you should have all that you need to study effectively for the examinations. Prepare your study area. Some things to consider are: have a good source of light have lots of paper available a clear work surface coloured pens if you prefer to use colour light or unobtrusive music if you prefer to learn with music Keeping healthy Eat fresh foods such as fruit and nuts. Pile up on the vegetables in the evenings and drink plenty of water and fruit juice to keep the flu at bay. The brain needs to be fed well in order that it performs at its optimum. Try not to nibble on too many chocolates and sweets while studying. That said, the odd sweet or chocolate will provide an energy boost when you feel really tired. Getting a good night s rest is also important. Sleep will rejuvenate you and keep you going. Grade 8 Examination Booklet June 2016 P a g e 5

6 Devising a Revision Timetable If you plan your revision carefully you will enjoy the feeling of being well-prepared for the examinations, secure in the knowledge that you have done your best and have covered all the work. Create a calendar for this purpose, using bright colours/larger paper etc. Start by marking in the dates and times of your examinations. Shade in the dates and times when you know you have other commitments, e.g. sports fixtures/family function. Work out how much time you would need per section per subject. Remember to spend more time on those subjects you find more difficult. Using a pencil, begin to draw up your revision timetable by writing in the subject and the sections that you wish to cover each day. You could leave a revision time blank each week, as a safety net for work not covered as planned. This may be as a result of those unforeseen circumstances that make life interesting. Do not get stressed out if you don t stick rigidly to the timetable. Sometimes you start by expecting to cover too much at one time. The main idea is to get you to focus on the work that needs to be covered and to work towards a goal. Be sure to timetable rest and relaxation. Before changing subjects, take a longer break of about minutes and try to get outside or do something different. Grade 8 Examination Booklet June 2016 P a g e 6

7 Study Methods Each one of you will have your own method of studying and it is important that you feel comfortable with your chosen style. It is equally important that you admit if your method has not worked in the past. Here are some tips that you may like to try out. These are tried and tested methods. Start by reading through a section from beginning to end. This will give you an overview of what is to come. Focus on headings and pictures and diagrams. Ask questions as to the content of the section (why, what, when, where, how and who?). This will help to get your mind in touch with the main areas within each section. (E.g.: What do I need to know about this topic? What exactly is this text about? How does this section link up with what I have just studied?) Re-read the passage with the aim to answering your questions. Look up words you do not understand, refer closely to graphs and diagrams, highlight important ideas in colour, etc. Do not try to make notes at this stage. Aim to check that you have understood the work. Think about the passage and focus on key points. Re-read the passage making notes on the relevant material. This may take the form of block notes or diagrammatic notes e.g. mind maps/spider diagrams. It is a good idea to redo Mathematics exercises and worksheets as well as work through past papers. Diagrams can become excellent forms of summary in subjects such as Geography and Biology. A diagram should be drawn clearly with large labels for easy identification. When encouraging a difficulty concept, try to break it up into smaller units and talk your way through the steps of the problem. If you have difficulty remembering something, pin up key words on your bedroom wall or cupboard door as a constant reminder. Each time you walk past the word, stop and ask yourself a question or two about it so as to trigger off a response. In language, you need to understand the rule to apply it, e.g. rules for the verlede tyd. Review. Aim to ensure that you remember what you have learned by doing review worksheets/past papers/testing yourself with questions that you set or working with a friend and testing each other verbally. Just before the examination Get a good night s sleep. Have a good breakfast. Arrive at the venue with time to spare. Make sure you have the right equipment, tissues, watch, etc. During the examination Don t rush into answering questions. Read the instructions at the beginning to ensure that you know how to answer all the questions and how many questions to answer. Read through the questions carefully. If there is a choice of questions make your choice carefully. Underline key words in the questions. Stick to the time plan given to you by your teacher. 8 Accounting and Business Studies Structure of Exam: Pupils will write one examination. Pupils need to study from their note books. Paper 1 Duration: 1 hour Total marks: 100 Content: Paper 1 Theory on all business studies and accounting done Business Studies Money, International Trade, Banks, Inflation, Economic Systems, Trade Unions, Budgets, RDP General Ledger all ledgers and balance bank ledger Accounting equation Revision techniques: Practise ledgers and accounting equations. Go over all tests and refer back to your corrections. Underline keywords. Always go over your answers when you have finished the whole paper. Check calculations. 11 Biology Structure of Exam: The pupils will write one examination based on their theory from Term 1 and 2. The first part of the paper will be multiple choice questions, followed by more structured questions. Paper 1 (Theory) Duration: 1 Hour 15 minutes Total Marks: 60 Content: Circulatory system: heart, blood vessels Components of blood Respiratory system: lungs, alveoli, ventilation & gaseous exchange Diseases associated with the circulatory & respiratory systems Cellular respiration: aerobic & anaerobic Human reproduction: gametes, fertilisation, implantation, menstrual cycle, baby development, giving birth Role of the umbilical cord & placenta (including effect of smoking, alcohol & drugs thereon) Puberty & secondary sexual characteristics Revision techniques: Pupils can summarise their notes from their workbooks. Test themselves look, cover, write, check. Pupils can draw the pathway of blood around the body, labelling Oxygenated blood red, and deoxygenated blood in blue. This diagram can be linked to the respiratory system. For studying diseases/disorders, write down the causes, symptoms & possible treatments for each disease/disorder in bullet points. It is advisable to practice writing out the equation for aerobic respiration. 12 Chemistry Structure of Examination: The pupils will write one examination based on their theory from Term 1 and 2. The first part of the paper will be multiple choice questions, followed by more structured questions. Paper 1 (Theory) Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes Total Marks: 85 Content: The history of the periodic table The first 20 elements (names and physical characteristics) Atomic structures, electron configurations and using the periodic table Reactivity of elements in different groups Salt preparation: reactions with acids Metals, non-metals and metalloids Phases of matter, atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures Separation methods (mixtures) Symbols used for elements and writing chemical formulae Valencies Writing and balancing chemical formulae/equations (basics) Revision techniques: Pupils can summarise their notes from their workbook and textbook. Put up a large Periodic table on a wall in your house, highlighting the different groups, and writing the different characteristics of each group on each. Practice writing formulae and balancing them. 13 English Structure of Examination: The language examination will include a comprehension with contextual questions, they must know the features of a text as well as be able to deduce information from the text. A good sense of general knowledge will assist them in the comprehension. They have to know the features of non-fiction writing and be able to analyse and comment on writer s effect and choices. The examination will be 1 hour 30 minutes in length. This is a skills based examination and the topics will unseen. The literature examination will involve questions on Holes, as well as Wordsworth Short Stories, and will involve knowledge of the storyline and characters. The students will be responsible to revise the novel and short stories that we study in class. The examination will be 1 hour 30 minutes in length. This examination can be revised and prepped by using the resources created in class. The writing examination will involve longer imaginative pieces of writing, focusing on descriptive and narrative styles of writing. The exam will be 1 hour 30 minutes in length this is a skills based exam and the topics will be unseen. Content: An understanding of source work terms is assumed. Students should study any new vocabulary, but, more importantly, they need to be able to apply these terms to source work questions. Revision techniques: Pupils should use a study method of their choice to outline the characters of each story and how they are relevant to the storyline. They should bullet point the order of events in each story. In addition, they could work through their class notes to ensure they understand all of the material covered in class. Resources available to you: The students should use the resources made available to them via the Homework app. Furthermore, they can attend clinics and speak to their teachers about getting extension work so as to challenge themselves. 14 French Structure of Examination: The pupils will write three examinations on the work covered in Term 1 and 2. Structures examination 1 hour Section 1 will be on the grammar and conjugation. Section 2 will be on written comprehension. Section 3 they will have to write a short essay. Listening approximately 30 minutes They will answer multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions on conversations. Section 1 They will listen to the recording twice. Section 2 They will listen to the recording 3 times. Oral- 2 minutes They will each have to prepare an oral presentation on a topic discussed in class. Content: Grammar, conjugation and vocabulary covered in Term 1 and 2. Revision techniques: Pupils need to learn their verbs in their books. They can use their grammar workbooks or the links on the website to practice exercises. Work through your past tests. 15 Geography Structure of Examination: Duration: 1 hr 30 minutes Total marks: 80 marks The paper will offer a combination of short questions (multiple choice questions, True or False, matching columns) that test terminology and general understanding, as well as longer questions which will test application of knowledge. Content: Longer questions may be source based i.e. refer to a photo or map, text extract or case study. The source material may be unseen, but questions will only be based on content that has been covered. Students may be required to draw, label and calculate and should therefore bring the necessary stationery and equipment to the exam. Re-do ALL the exercises and tasks as part of your revision especially the extended writing pieces! Try something different like making an audio clip instead of a written summary. 16 History Structure of Examination: Examination time: Total mark allocation: 2 hours 90 marks The questions in the June examinations will be structured in the same way as those of the tests. There will be three types of questions: short questions, which test content knowledge and understanding; source-based questions, which test the ability to understand how evidence is used in history and also require the application of the content knowledge; and longer writing questions, which require an historical interpretation. I will provide a writing frame for these longer questions to help the pupils to structure their answers. Content: An understanding of source work terms is assumed. Pupils should study the definitions, but, more importantly, they need to be able to apply these terms to source work questions. Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment American Revolution French Revolution Industrial Revolution Scramble for Africa Mineral Revolution Revision techniques: Pupils should revise the chronology of events through making use of timelines. They should also use mind mapping, flowchart and other techniques to revise the causal relationships and significance of various events and figures. The detail of what happened needs to be studied, but the pupils also need to understand the links of cause and effect. Resources available to you: Notes made and given in class are the primary source for studying. In particular, the reader provides the key content to be studied. Pupils are able to access online timelines and revision resources. The PowerPoints used in class are available on the MyHomework App. YouTube videos, particularly those of Khan Academy and Crash Course world history, are helpful. 17 Mathematics Structure of Examination: Paper 1 1 hour 50 marks A mixture of short-answer and structured questions. Paper 2 1 hour 50 marks A mixture of short-answer and structured questions. Both papers are written on the same day and cover all the content. Content: Numbers Integers Exponents Algebraic expressions Fractions Equations Revision techniques: Regular revision of previous work must form a part of daily study. Prepare a study timetable that will allow enough time to study, to practise examples and to go through all work before the examinations. Set high academic expectations. Strive for a perfect knowledge of all work. Take responsibility for own learning. Learn everything that was taught in class. Knowledge and skills come before doing new questions. Work must be done neatly and in a legible handwriting. Do not tolerate careless mistakes. importance. 18 Physics Structure of Examination: One paper 1 hour 30 minutes Multiple choice questions - 20 marks Structured questions - 80 marks Content: The examination content will be based on the material that has been completed in the grade 8 syllabus to date including the topics of Measurements, Forces, Uniform motion, Work, Energy and Power and Magnetism. In addition to the above, any other work done in class for examination preparation. Revision techniques: Start off by making rough notes and then memorise the notes. Making notes without studying them in detail serves no purpose. Work through all past worksheets, tests and internal examination question papers with pen and paper as if doing them for the first time. Work through as many past external examination question papers as possible.
