Sterilization and disinfection. Structure, ecology and reproduction of representative genera. Cultivation of micro organisms. Isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. Nutrition and biochemical activities of micro organisms. Antigens and antibodies. Economic importance of selected microbial groups. Microbial variation and heredity. MIC 202: Introductory Microbiology II 3 units Prerequisite: MIC 201. Classification of Plant and Animal micro organisms. Biological and biochemical pathways of micro organisms. Cycles of elements in nature; nitrogen fixation. 300 LEVEL COURSES MIC 301: Bacteriology 4 units The morphology, life cycle and biochemical characteristics of bacteria. Systematic study of bacteria and related procaryotes. Role of bacteria in plant and animal diseases. MIC 302: Virology 4 units General characteristics of plant, animal and bacterial viruses. Viral replication, spread and cytopathic effects. Virus cultivation, purification and assay. Selected viral diseases and general methods of control. Viroids as pathogens. MIC 303: Immunology and Immunochemistry 3 units Basic concepts of immunology. Structure of antigens and antibody formation. Immediate and delayed hypersensitivity. Immunopathology and transplantation immunology. Immunoprophylaxis and serotherapy. MIC 304: Microbial Physiology and Metabolism 4 units Microbial cell structure and function. Nutrition and metabolism of yeasts, moulds and bacteria. Microbial growth and factors influencing growth. Spore development and germination. General aspects of energy-yielding processes. Aerobic and anaerobic dissimilation. Regulation of cell cycle in bacteria and yeasts. Monomer and polymer synthesis. Active transport across the cell membrane. MIC 305: Microbial Ecology 3 units Microbes and ecological theory. Physiological, morphological and genetic adaptations of micro organisms to their environment. Microbial interactions. Micro organisms in natural ecosystems. The life of micro organisms in air, springs, rivers, lakes and seas. Cycling of elements in water and sediments. Microbial bioconversions in nature and bio fouling.
5 MIC 306: Soil Microbiology 3 units The characteristics of the soil environment. Microbial flora and fauna of soil. Microbial activities in the soil. Biogeochemical cycles and mineral transformation. Effects of pesticides on soil micro organisms. Microbiology of the chemosphere. MIC 399: Applied Microbiology/Industrial Attachment 3 units Industrial attachment in Medical/Public Health or industrial establishments during the long vacation. A report to be written on Applied Microbiology. 400 LEVEL COURSES MIC 401: Microbial Genetics 3 units Principles of genetic analysis. Nature of mutations. Induction, isolation and biochemical characterisation of mutants. Genetic recombination in procaryotes including transformation, transduction, phage conversion and conjugation. General and specialized methods and techniques in microbial genetics. Chemical coding and expression of genetic information. Fungal genetics and mitotic recombination in lower eucaryotes. Principles and applications of genetic engineering. MIC 402: Environmental Microbiology 3 units Impact of human activities on the value of natural resources. Soil, water and air pollution. Waste disposal and management. Methods of water or sewage treatment processes and activities of specific micro organisms involved. Disease transmission by water. Biological and chemical oxygen demand. Biodegradation of pollutants and recalcitrance. MIC 403: Food Microbiology 3 units A survey of micro organisms important in foods. Intrinsic and extrinsic properties of foods affecting microbial activities. Indices of food sanitary quality and microbiological standards. Food spoilage and food-borne diseases. Methods of food preservation. MIC 404: Industrial Microbiology 3 units Scope of industrial Microbiology. Micro organisms of industrial importance and fermentation processes. Strain selection and development. Media formulation and economics. Optimization of fermentation processes. Primary and secondary metabolites. Immobilized enzymes and microbial cells. Application of microbiological principles in brewing, dairy and food industries. Production of microbial inoculants. MIC 405: Petroleum Microbiology 3 units Biogenesis of fossil fuels with emphasis on the role of micro organisms. Petroleum prospecting and secondary recovery. Microbial corrosion of pipes and equipment. Methanogenesis and methanotrophy. Effects of oil spills on microbial activities in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Bio deterioration of aviation fuels, lubricants and cutting fluids. Biotransformation of hydrocarbons.

Microbiology of different plant parts. Identification, diagnosis and control of phytopathogenic viruses and viroids. Role of microbes in litter decomposition and soil fertility, bio fertilization, mineralization and nitrogen fixation. Detection and prevention of animal diseases in the tropics. MIC 407: Medical Bacteriology 3 units Host-parasite relationships. Pathogenic bacteria and disease. Methods of isolation of pathogens. Virulence, spectrum and symptoms of infection. Bacterial infections: Treatment and control. Epidemiology of diseases. MIC 408: Medical Virology 3 units Systematic virology. Laboratory identification of viral groups. Diagnosis, epidemiology, prevention and control. Methods of viral cultivation with special reference to tissue cultures. Nature of viral virulence. MIC 409: Medical Mycology 3 units Characteristics of fungi pathogenic for man and domestic animals. Cutaneous, subcutaneous and systemic mycoses. Pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment and control of representative groups of fungi. Poisonous mushrooms and mycotoxins. MIC 410: Medical Entomology 3 units Characteristics of arthropods of medical importance. A study of representative groups of arthropods incriminated in disease transmission. Mechanism of transmission, symptoms, treatment, epidemiology, laboratory diagnosis and control of diseases transmitted by arthropods vectors. MIC 411: Pharmaceutical Microbiology 3 units The chemistry and production of synthetic chemotherapeutic agents and antibiotics. Quality control of pharmaceutical products. The mode of action and assay of antimicrobial agents. Concepts of antibiotic sensitivity and resistance as related to microbial physiology. Mechanism of drug resistance. MIC 412: Applied Immunology 3 units Structure, synthesis and classification of immunoglobulins. Immunogenicity and antigenicity. Tolerance. Immunoparalysis and immunosuppression. Vaccines and toxoids. Interferons and tumour immunology. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Monoclonal antibodies. Advances in immunological techniques. Bacterial, fungal and parasitic immunology. MIC 421: Seminars 2 units Selected topics from different areas of Microbiology.
