2 SPANISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

3 PAKISTANÍES There was a joke, that used to be very popular among teachers in the nineties, when the school counselor started to be introduced in High Schools in Spain. We were called Pakistanis, that originally means, a citizen from Pakistan, but if you separate the word in Spanish has a very different meaning: Pa qué estáis aquí! What are you here for!

5 SITUATION HAS CHANGED After 20 years a lot of things have changed. We can now say that counseling and school guidance is more integrated in all the different levels of the Spanish education.

6 ORGANIZATION We can find differences depending on the region of Spain, because education curriculums and regulations are shared by the State and by the different Autonomous Comunities. Nevertheless we can find the following structures in almost all the different Comunidades Autónomas:

7 Elementary School (0-6) Early Attention Teams and Specific Needs Teams Main tasks: Detection of learning disabilities School and teacher s counseling (external) Parents counseling

12 Vocational Training: Specific guidance resources (1) 1. Specific department of vocational and academic counselling: Schools that offer vocational training studies have an specific department that helps students in the transition into work market.

13 Vocational Training: Specific guidance resources (2) 2. Specific subjects : FORMATION AND LABOUR ORIENTATION: This subject have three specific content blocks. Occupational risk-prevention. Transition into work market. Labour rights and obligations ENTERPRISE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP: contents How to set up and run a business. How to make a business plan.

14 Vocational Training: Specific guidance resources (3) 3. Internship in an enterprise experiences: Every vocational training studies include internship in an enterprise closely linked to the professional degree.

15 Vocational Training: Specific guidance resources (4) 4. Personal Interviews aimed at students orientation Specific help to find a job Personal advices about further studies. Other questions related guidance and jobs market

16 Other counselling agencies operating outside of the Educational system

Local and social agents: The most important Trades Unions have counsellors that help to its members to find a job, to changing job, to know resources about longlife learning These organizations along employers organizations have an important rol planning and organising training activities targeted to unemployed and employed workers.

18 2. Autonomous Communities Labour Administration have an important rol with regard to employed and unemployed workers formation and guidance. Main actions: Orientation Interview. Mentoring for employment and business creation. Development of the personal aspects useful to find a job. Interview training. How to make an efficient training and professional route.

19 3. University Guidance Centers: Centers of Employment Guidance and Information for University students and graduate (COIE) : Spanish Universities have services connected with Public Employment Services. Their actions are aimed at various groups (students, graduates, companies).

20 The future and some questions Will special needs students remain included in the current system or will a new isolated system emerge? Are we still an important aspect of the Spanish school system? Are we still going to be Inclusive Schools representatives? Are there too many and not enough efficient counselling teams? Are Spanish guidance teams enough proactive?
