1 Aplifiers and Superlatives An Exaination of Aerican Clais for Iproving Linearity and Efficiency By D. T. N. WILLIAMSON and P. J. WALKE ecent articles, particularly in the United States, have shown that soe confusion of thought exists about the "goodness" of an aplifier for reproducing sound. This has been accopanied by a debaseent of the ters used to describe the properties of an aplifier; words that have a precise eaning when standing alone becoe eaningless when qualified by superlatives. This article, which starts with a discussion of what constitutes a good aplifier, attepts to clear up soe isconceptions and generally to clarify the position. The ost coonly specified paraeter of an aplifier is its haronic distortion or interediations content, and this has tended to be regarded as the priary standard of "goodness." In 1944, one of the writers suggested that a standard of.1 per cent total haronic distortion at axiu output was a good level of perforance to ai at. Such a low distortion content is readily achievable by odern design ethods, and is, in fact, undetectable by listening tests, however refined. This arbitrary figure was chosen, not because it was the axiu perissible, but because, being rather lower than was absolutely necessary, a good argin is left for any deterioration of the equipent when in service. The requireents for a good aplifier were listed in the article already entioned, but are worth repeating and extending. These are: (1 Negligible non-linearity distortion up to the axiu rated output. (The ter "non-linearity distortion" includes the production of undesired haronic frequencies and the interediation of coponent frequencies of the sound wave. This requires that the dynaic output/input characteristic be linear witching close liits up to the axiu excursion of any wavefor, with frequency coponents inside and outside the working range, which is likely to be fed to the aplifier. This should hold good under conditions of varying load ipedance such as are likely to by encountered in practice. (2 Linear frequency response within the audible frequency spectru of I-2, Hz. (3 Negligible phase shift within the audible range. Although the phase relationship between the coponent frequencies of a coplex steady-state sound does not appear to affect the audible quality of the sound, the sae is not true of sounds of a transient nature. (4 Good transient response. In addition to low phase and frequency distortion, other factors which are frequency for the accurate reproduction of transient wavefors are the eliination of changes in effective gain due to current and voltage cut-off in any stages, the utost care in the design of iron-cored coponents, and the reduction of the nuber of such coponents to a iniu. Changes in effective gain during "low- within the audio range (produced either by coponents Article is restored on a NexTube 1 frequency" transients occur in aplifiers with output stages of the self-biased Class AB type, causing serious distortion, which is not revealed by steady-state easureents. The transient causes the current in the output stage to rise, and this is followed, at a rate deterined by the tie-constant of the biasing network, by a rise in bias voltage which alters the effective gain of the aplifier. (5 Low output resistance. This requireent is concerned with the attainent of good frequency and transient response fro the loudspeaker syste by ensuring that it has adequate electrical daping. Air loading, suspension stiffness and resistance, and electroagnetic daping restrict the cone oveent of a ovingcoil loudspeaker. The efficiency of a baffle-loaded speaker is rarely higher than 5-1 per cent, and the air loading, which deterines the radiation, is not high. Electroagnetic daping is therefore iportant in controlling the otion of the cone. This effect is proportional to the current which can be generated in the coil circuit, and is therefore proportional to the total resistance of the circuit. The output resistance of the aplifier therefore should, in general, be uch lower than the coil ipedance. (6 Adequate power reserve. The realistic reproduction of orchestral usic in an average roo requires peak power capabilities of the order of 15-2 watts when the electro-acoustic transducer is a baffle-loaded oving-coil loudspeaker syste of noral efficiency. The use of ho -loaded or other efficient loudspeakers ay reduce the power requireent to the region of 1 watts. In an aplifier for the best possible quality it is, of course, assued that output peaks required in practice will be cofortably below the axiu available. Even so, good design should ensure that the overload characteristic will not suffer teporary paralysis or "blocking" on oentary overload. (7 The level of hu and noise should be at least 6 db below axiu output. This is a foridable specification, and by no eans every aplifier styled as "high quality" will eet it. However, provided that these requireents are et in every respect and that extraneous coponents occurring
2 inside or outside that range do not exceed a sall fraction of 1 per cent, any aplifier will sound as good as any other aplifier and it becoes ipossible to "iprove" a power aplifier in the sense of producing better sound. Efficiency. On the other hand it is, of course, absurd to say that aplifiers cannot be iproved in any sense. Efficiency, copactness, and reliability are iportant and it is with regard to these factors that iproveents are possible and in any cases desirable. The size and purpose of an aplifier will deterine how uch weight should be given to each of these factors. In sall aplifiers with power outputs below twenty watts, power efficiency is not usually of prie iportance, and other considerations such as ease of construction and certainty of results ay easily outweigh it. With large aplifiers, efficiency becoes a very iportant factor. The designer's ai is (or should be to produce the best possible sound for those who will ultiately ake use of his efforts. If he designs for construction not under his control, he ust, as far as possible, ensure that every aplifier ade will eet his perforance figures without undue difficulty and with the eployent of liited easuring equipent. In such a case, the avoidance of circuitry, which is not straight forward, or in which deviations fro specification in the values and construction of coponents is liable to produce poor result, is paraount. The designer who has control over the production of the coplete equipent has a different set of probles. He has uch greater freedo of choice, and it is likely that he will arrive at different circuitry. The aplifier, which was described in Wireless World, April- May, 1947, is an exaple of the first kind of circuitry. The success it has achieved since then, in the hands of people with widely varying degrees of skill, is indicative that trouble-free perforance is readily obtainable with only siple adjustents. This aplifier was based upon a triode output stage with a good output transforer, the perforance of which was iproved by overall negative feedback. The only valid criticis that can be ade about its perforance is on the score of efficiency. By the use of tetrodes as output valves this could be raised to the order of 35-4 per cent, which eans that, for the sae power consuption, the output could be increased to 22 W, or, alternatively, that the power consuptions cold be reduced by about 2 W. Whether this is worth doing or not is probleatical. In the designer's opinion, the additional risk of trouble in unskilled hands outweighs the advantage of higher axiu power output, as in the vast ajority of cases even the present level of output cannot be fully utilized. The reduction in power consuption and h.t. voltage would not greatly affect the cost, although it would give a higher factor of safety for capacitors in the circuits. There is, however, no evidence that this is at present inadequate. Circuits with Distributed Loads. Articles 2,3 have recently been published in the United States claiing the superiority of a so-called " ultra-linear " output circuit in which the output valves are used as tetrodes, with negative feedback applied non-linearly by connecting the screens to a tap on the priary of the output transforer. It is stated that the perforance is audibly iproved over that of triodes with siilar degrees of negative feedback. The present writers do not believe this clai. The circuitry which fors the basis of these Aerican clais for " ultra-linearity " and higher efficiency has, in fact, been failiar in this country for several years, and the technique has been further developed and used in a coercially produced high - quality aplifier 4,5. It consists of the distribution of the load ipedance between the electrodes of each output valve in order to obtain the optiu perforance fro that valve. In its siplest for, and as used by Hafler and Keroes, the circuit arrangeent is as shown in Fig. 1. The circuit is noral except that the screen of the tetrode can be tapped on the output transforer priary winding, thus coupling it to the anode in any ratio, and rendering a section of the load ipedance coon to both electrodes. If the tap is affixed at point A, giving a coupling factor of unity, the stage behaves as a triode, its perforance being deterined by the dynaic characteristic of the screen and control grid, and if the tap is shifted to point B, the coupling factor is zero, and the stage behaves as a siple tetrode. 3 will be a progressive inclusion of the load ipedance in the screen circuit and a progressive change fro tetrode characteristics at B, to triode characteristics at A. It is convenient to consider the stage as being a tetrode with negative feedback applied to the screen. It differs fro a tetrode stage with feedback applied to the control grid, first in that the screen introduces a nonlinear eleent in the feedback loop, and secondly, because as the degree of feedback is increased, the perissible anode swing is decreased, due to anode current cut-off on the negative excursions of screen voltage, until finally the Ia -Va curves becoe those of a triode A ore coplete account of the behavior of the circuit is given in the Appendix. The curves of Fig 2, which apply to a single valve, show the effect of changing the tapping point. The output at the point of overload, the relative gain and the output resistances decrease as the degree of feedback is increased, the output resistance decreasing very rapidly because it is dependent, not on the gain reduction, but on the aplification factor, which undergoes a large change. The distortion at constant output, which is predoinantly second haronic, rises slowly at first until the point of overload is reached. Since the axiu power output is progressively reducing, the distortion curves for axiu output or a percentage of axiu output will show a progressive reduction fro tetrode to triode operation. In view of the increase the distortion, as shown in Fig 2, it would appear that there is little to be gained by the use of this circuitry, since a siple tetrode, with feedback to the control grid, would give a siilar reduction of output resistance, and this would be accopanied by a progressive reduction in distortion. This is indeed true in the case of a single valve. When push-pull connection is considered we obtain a different state of affairs, because of the cancellation of second haronic coponent, and we arrive at the curves shown in Fig.3.The general shape of the curves is aintained under varying loads. With up to 3 per cent of the winding coon to screen and anode the reduction in distortion is greater than the reduction in gain. This "soething for nothing" is sall, however, and can be lost or even reversed if there are appreciable departures fro precise balance at any frequency. It is, of course, not essential to have the screen tapped directly on the priary winding, and an auxiliary winding tightly coupled to the priary (ideally in the for of a bifilar winding ay be used. This has the advantage that the screen supply voltage ay differ fro that of the anode to give optiu operating conditions. The "Acoustical" Circuit. A further developent of this circuit ("super-ultra-linear," perhaps? used in the Acoustical "QUAD" aplifier and its predecessor, takes the coon portion of the winding and inserts it in the cathode, giving the circuit of Fig 4. The distortion coponent are predoinantly second and even haronics. ditional flexibility in design, so that the paraeters of the output stage ay be varied to suit the penultiate stage a technique giving greater scope in arriving at a well-balanced ratio of stage distortions and hence an optiu final design. In the output stage of the Acoustical "Q.U.A.D." aplifier, using two KT66 valves, the values are so chosen that an output of 12 watts is ob- Fig. 3 Curves of distortions for a push-pull arrangeent predoinantly tried and odd haronics. as the anode and screen circuits are concerned, this arrangeent is identical to that of Fig 1 (neglecting winding resistance and leakage reactance. The only difference has in the circuit, since that portion of the voltage appearing across the coon winding is now applied in the grid circuit as overall negative feedback. It is, of course, feedback of the ost desirable kind, since it is the ost practical ethod of applying voltage feedback over a single stage without either throwing gain away wastefully or increasing the load on the previous valve. Since the screen is now connected to a decoupled point, it follows that the designer is free to use different voltages for screen and anode if required, without the necessity of additional windings, with their attendant disadvantages. Further, the arrangeent akes it possible to provide the optiu degree of soothing for the anode and screen supplies The grid resistor ay be taken to the cathode end of the coon winding if desired, with the result that the input resistance is increased, thus facilitating the design of the previous stage and reducing the value of the coupling capacitance necessary. 4 + HT Fig.4 tained fro a 32-V supply with a grid-to-grid input of 72 volts peak, the input resistance being 1 egoh. The total haronic distortion of the output stage alone is not ore than.7 per cent, and the output resistance is approxiately half the load resistance. By coparison with the sae valves used as triodes to obtain the sae output, the following advantages are apparent. (1 Distortion is less than half that of triode connection, due to the cathode and screen feedback. (2 Efficiency is increased fro 27 per cent to 36 per cent, resulting in the h.t. voltage being lower by about 1 V, thus siplifying reliability probles both in the aplifier itself and throughout the range of preaplifiers, tuners, etc., which ay take their supply fro it. (3 Less soothing is necessary for equivalent hu-levels. Additional overall negative feedback can be applied to the coplete aplifier, and with the ratios used in the above exaple, 8 db less feedback is required for a given level of distortion than with triodes. This assists in aintaining a good argin of stability and reduces the effect of overloading due to the presence effective feedback range. There reains the question of output resistance to be considered, about which there appears to be soe confusion. This is probably due to the general use, as a easure of the efficacy of daping, of the load resistance / output resistance ratio, soeties called the daping factor, the scale of which becoes virtually eaningless at high valves. An output resistance of zero is, of course, only an arbitrary figure, which has ultiately to be added to the speech coil resistance. Independently of the output-stage circuitry, zero or a ixture of negative voltage and positive current feedback can obtain any reasonable value positive -. It should be pointed out, however, that the optiu value is dependent upon the loudspeaker and particularly the Load Basic circuit used in the Acoustical Manufacturing Copany s Q.U.A.D. aplifiers and its predecessor. intended perforance of its enclosure, so that doctrine "the ore daping the better," is not always sound. Coparison of Output circuit - To suarize, Table 1 gives a coparison of the relative erits and deerits of various output circuits. It will be seen that there is little to choose between the perforance of triodes and distributed-load tetrodes (especially the cathode coupled variety, with the exception of efficiency, in which respect the tetrode circuits are superior to the triode In order to avoid isapprehension, it should be stated that a siilar order of perforance is obtainable fro a conventional tetrode circuit, by the application of the appropriate degree of negative feedback, preferably in the for of ultiple loops to ease the stability probles. The advantage of the distributed load circuits is that as a considerable aount of negative feedback is included in the output stage itself, the design of the reainder of the aplifier is siplified and the probles of stability and restriction of scope in design usually associated with large aounts of overall negative feedback are avoided. Practical Difficulties. So far we have only been considering the ideal case. I a practical transforer, however, the windings are not perfectly coupled, but are ore loosely coupled by a coplex network of leakage reactance fored by the distribution of leakage inductance and self-capacitance throughout the windings. This departure fro the ideal ay ean that, at high frequencies, the circuit is not at all as it would appear on paper, and the effective sense of the coupling ay even be reversed, producing oscillation. In a less severe case, peaks and troughs in the frequency response characteristic ay occur, accopanied by "ringing» and instability when the aplifier is excited by a transient. These defects are serious, and can only be avoided by designing the output transforer carefully and by aintaining close control over its production, as even with transforer of the sae noinal specification, wide variations in perforance at high frequencies ay occur due to inor variations in the quality and thickness of insulants, and in the positioning of windings. The designer who has coplete control over production can arrange that aterials and constructor of the transforer do not depart fro specification, and even if they should do so he has facilities to detect and correct the deviation at an early stage. He is therefore able to ake use of circuitry of the type discussed, without the dangers that would attend its use in unskilled hands or where easureent facilities are absent. The advantages obtained have already been discussed The constructor with liited facilities cannot be too strongly advised to keep to proven circuit, which are inherently trouble-free. In particular, he should keep to designs requiring the iniu nuber of coupled circuits in the output transforer, since the possibility of Article is restored on a NexTube 4

It will be appreciated fro the foregoing that there are a large nuber of solutions to the proble of designing a first-class aplifier, and no one of these solutions can be called the best solution. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and the individual designer ust choose that which ost nearly eet his needs. The " goodness " of an aplifier is not shown by its circuits diagra. Circuits have no inherent agic properties, but are erely the tools with which the designer seeks to achieve a certain result, and different designers provided always that they have the sae high standards in view ay achieve the sae result by different eans.
