Jigsaw Fundraising Challenge In Memory of Laura (Jigsaw) - An enthusiastic Rainbow Leader
In memory of Laura (Jigsaw) - an enthusiastic Rainbow Leader
Section 1: Crafts Alien Jigsaw Magnets Make your own alien jigsaw magnets! Cut out a jigsaw piece of good quality card and decorate with paint, pens and googly eyes and fix a small magnet to the back. Puzzle Butterflies Have a go at making puzzle butterflies! You Need: Puzzle Pieces from Old Puzzles Craft wire Cool glue gun Paint/brushes Black permanent markers Hole punch/black paper Sparkly bits/decorations Jewellery pin backs Instructions: Paint puzzle pieces in bright colours (or do them plain white if you are going to add decorations) you ll need a couple of coats. Use black paint (or use black permanent marker) the head and body stripe. For spots decorate with punched holes from black paper or use permanent marker. Add whatever extra decorations/sparkly bits you like. Cut a 3" piece of craft wire. Fold in half and bend into antennae shapes. Glue to the back of the butterfly. Then glue on jewellery pin back and leave to dry.
Puzzling Photo Frames To make the photo frames: You Need: Stiff, smooth cardboard (assorted colours or plain) PVA glue Paint (optional) Old puzzle pieces (or make your own!) Any decorations you choose Magnet for sticking to fridges Instructions: Cut out 2 5x7 rectangles from the thin smooth cardboard. Cut out a 4x6 rectangle in the middle of one of the 5x7 rectangles. This piece will be the front of your frame. The solid rectangle is the back of your frame Glue the front of the frame to the back of the frame on three sides. Do not glue the fourth side or you will not be able to get a photo in the frame! Optional: Paint the puzzle pieces different colours. You can choose to keep the puzzle pieces their original colour if you like. Glue the puzzle pieces to the cardboard frame and embellish with stickers, glitter or anything of your choice. Place a photo into the frame. Glue a magnet strip on the back of the frame for hanging Jigsaw Door Hangers Make your own jigsaw shaped door hanger, with each letter of your name on a puzzle piece! Use lots of coloured card or foam to make your pieces. Join the letters onto a ribbon to hang down or across your door.
Jigsaw Jewellery Here are some suggestions but you could come up with your own! Some stages will need close supervision with younger sections. Rainbows and Brownies may need some stages pre-made for the necklaces. Earrings are a craft for guides+. Love heart friendship necklaces: You Need: 2x linking puzzle pieces per person Pencil Acrylic paint- assorted colours including white and red. Needle/small hole punch Craft Knife Elasticated cord Instructions: - Paint over the printed image of the puzzle with the white acrylic paint. Paint both sides of the jigsaw pieces. Don t use too much water; you want the coverage to be quite thick. You may need to do more than one coat. Allow the pieces to dry for at least 15 minutes. - When completely dry (not soft around the edges) use a pencil to draw a pattern. Draw a heart where the pieces join. - To prevent the paint colours mixing, use a craft knife to go over the pencil markings. Younger groups will need leader help with this! This will stop colours mixing. You can do this activity with just 1 puzzle piece to make an original piece of art! - Paint the sections in different colours! Remember to paint both sides and the edges as this will make it water resistant. - When dry, punch a hole and thread the cord through. Earrings: You Need: 2 cardboard puzzle pieces acrylic spray mini hole punch or sharp thick needle 2 silver-plated/hypoallergenic jump rings 2 silver-plated/hypoallergenic earring findings round-nosed pliers Optional: Coloured nail varnish
Instructions: - Using the hole punch or needle create a hole at the top of each jigsaw puzzle piece. - Spray a coating of acrylic spray on the front and let it dry. - Optional: Use coloured nail varnish to create your own pattern on the earrings - Finally spray a light coating of acrylic spray on the back of each puzzle piece to protect the cardboard and make it waterproof. - Allow plenty of time to dry between each stage and remember to spray the edges too! - Now the jigsaw pieces are prepared, they are ready to be Idea! For the very crafty, jigsaw pieces can made using fimo. attached to the earrings. Simply use the pliers to open the jump ring and attach the ear hooks to both puzzle pieces to finish your earrings. Ensure that the jump rings are then closed securely so the pieces stay attached. Puzzle Soap! Have you ever tried making soap? It s not as hard as you think! This activity is suitable for all sections but best done in small groups or individually with supervision for younger groups. You Need: Melt and pour soap base (about 50g per person mould size dependent) Shaped silicone cake moulds (you can get puzzle shaped ones online!) Fragrance of your choice Soap dye colour(s) of your choice Microwave Embellishments like glitter, dried lavender, essential oils/vitamin E (optional) Instructions: - Measure out your soap base (roughly filling your mould is the easiest way to work out quantities). Put it in a microwavable jug and microwave for ~ 20 seconds. Take care not to let it boil. - Stir gently, but not too much to create bubbles. Add your dye, the more you add the deeper the colour. If you want a marbled effect, do not stir or add after pouring. - Pour into the mould. - Add the fragrance, vitamin E and any embellishments. - It will set quickly on the side in about 30 minutes, but if you have a fridge this will reduce the time further. - When set, peel the mould away from the soap. Your soap is now ready to use or be gift wrapped in cellophane Take it further! Why not try making bath bombs or lip gloss?
Wide games are great fun, and a way of enjoying the out of doors. These ideas can be adapted dependant on how much time you have and the sort of area you will be using so whether you are doing this as part of your evening meeting, or spending an afternoon whilst on holiday or camp, have a go at a Jigsaw Wide Game! We have compiled two wide games and some team activities that we hope all sections will enjoy. Jigsaw Trail Make a simple jigsaw or puzzle and hide the pieces, giving the girls one piece of their jigsaw and them provide clues for them to find and recompile their jigsaw. How: The jigsaw could be as simple as a cereal box or old birthday/christmas cards cut into six pieces or more or pieces of a real jigsaw. Some of large wooden jigsaws used with toddler groups are ideal for this. Dependant on age of your unit, write clues that will challenge them but not be impossible. For younger girls, keep it simple your next clue is by the white gate, for older girls consider riddles or codes for them to decipher. Take it Further! Create map references and a map to older girls, or a simple map with the points marked for younger girls. Take it Further! Borrow geocaching hand sets and set a geocache trail to find the jigsaw parts, ask your Division or County whether they have these!
Jigsaw s Pieces Aim: In small groups, sixes or patrols, complete a series of team challenges and earn the jigsaw pieces on completion. First group to complete their puzzle wins! Here are some ideas for tasks, but you can make up your own: Make a tall tower from newspaper Tie a reef knot Cook food (this could be a meal or melting marshmallows on tea lights) Heat invisible ink to read a secret message Build a small raft, light a fire on it and set it afloat Scavenge for and collect items on a list, e.g., feathers, leaves, picture of queen, twig 10cm long Your winning group will be the ones who complete the tasks and their jigsaw first. Team Challenge Twist it! Write a challenge out, cut it into jigsaw pieces (this could be on the back of a card for younger girls so they can use the picture on the reverse to help them, or make it harder for older girls and use plain card). The first group to complete their jigsaw and challenge wins. Challenge suggestions: Rainbows: sing the rainbow song to your leader. Brownies: build a newspaper tower as tall as the tallest member in your group. Guides: In your patrol, design and make a costume out of newspaper, choose a model to parade your creation! The Senior Section: draw a sketch map of the local area (and/or do one of the Brownie/Guide activities, because we know they re just big kids at heart!). Giant Jigsaw Relay In teams, sixes or patrols, race against each other to collect pieces of a word. When you have all your pieces, work together to work out what it says! Remember you can only send one person up to collect a piece at a time! First team to decode their message wins! (Have a leader who they can run to and whisper it so each team gets a chance to work it out) For younger girls, use complete words. For older girls, try individual letters of a sentence and give them the basic structure of the sentence (how many letters per word). Twist it! Use a dice: they can only collect a piece of jigsaw when they throw a six.
Jigsaw team challenge Give each team a simple jigsaw (a picture cut into pieces would work) Blindfold half the team Only the blindfolded members may touch the jigsaw The sighted members must verbally instruct the blindfolded members on what to do with each piece First team to put the jigsaw together wins
Funky Fruit Salad! Using as many different fruits as you can, make a tropical fruit salad. Challenge everyone to try something new. What things did you like/dislike? Where do the more unusual fruits come from? Fruit Jigsaw! Make a fruit kebab. Remember to wash your hands first! You will need 1 kebab stick per girl A selection of fruit (bananas, apples, kiwis, pears, strawberries, pineapple work well) Knives Chopping board per group Peelers In groups get the girls to peel and chop up the fruit into chunks. Then give each girl a kebab stick and get them to feed the fruit chunks onto the stick Edible Jigsaw! You will need 1 piece of rice paper per girl Icing pens Selection of sweets Clean scissors or knives Wash hands well with soap before this activity Use the rice paper as a base and draw the picture on using icing pens and sweets (strawberry/liquorice laces would be good) Carefully cut the rice paper into pieces, mix it up and challenge the person next to you to put your puzzle back together! Then eat your creation!
Jigsaw Cupcakes! You will need cupcakes (or the ingredients to make your own) rice paper food colouring clean thin paint brushes knives icing Using the paint brushes draw jigsaw piece shapes with food colouring onto the rice paper then carefully cut the pieces out using the knives, use different colours to colour the pieces or draw patterns Cover the cupcakes with icing and use the jigsaw pieces to decorate the cup cake. Eat and enjoy Food animals! Put the edible jigsaw pieces together to create an animal of your choice! Provide the girls with a selection of foods which they can cut into chunks and cocktail sticks. Challenge them in groups to use the jigsaw pieces to create an animal Which team produces the best? Most original? Most colourful? Eat well plate Jigsaw! Cut pictures of the eat well plate (copy at the end of the pack) into pieces. You will need one per team. Label these either by backing them onto coloured paper or by sticking a post-it note over them with the team name on Hide them around the room/playing space Challenge the girls to find the pieces and put them back together They are only able to send one girl to hunt the pieces at a time
Got a few minutes spare? Why not try some of these puzzle based activities with your girls? All need little or no equipment. HUMAN KNOT In small groups, get the girls to make a circle and hold both their arms out in front. Now close their eyes and on the count of 3 they must find others hands and hold them in the circle. Now open your eyes and there should be a bit knot of arms! Without letting go of hands at any times, they must work out how to untangle themselves. This involves team work and might need people to go under arches or arms or carefully climb over arms. Can they untangle themselves? Make it harder try with larger numbers of people in the circle, or do not allow talking! WHERE DO I FIT? Get the girls to line up down the centre of the meeting place. Call out different options: All girls with blonde hair take 2 steps the left All girls with brown eyes take 2 steps the right All girls with a birthday in May take 3 steps to the left And so on, use as many options as you want. When you feel you have done enough ask if any girls did not move at all, if any girls had to move each time. Explain this is all part of the great human jigsaw puzzle, we all share things in common with other members but it is the mix that is unique to each individual that makes them special. MATCHBOX GAME Give each girl a matchbox and challenge them to fit as many items into their box as possible. If you are doing this in the meeting place, make sure there is a large supply of items for them to experiment with e.g., coins, safety pins, plasters etc. The girl who puzzles this out the best will fit the most items in.
WORDS WITHIN WORDS How many words can you find within the following phrases? JIGSAW PUZZLE FIND THE MISSING PIECE SLOT THE PIECES TOGETHER COMPLETE THE PICTURE I HAVE NEVER... Each person receives several jigsaw pieces Then take turns around the circle. Each person tells of something they have never done (example: I have never broken a bone or I have never travelled out of the country). Anyone who has done this must give the speaker one of their jigsaw pieces After going around the circle several times, the person with the most jigsaw pieces wins JIGSAW THEFT! Everyone stands in a circle. One girl walks outside saying Someone s stolen the last jigsaw piece, the very last one. She continues by describing someone in the circle. When that person realised it s her, she says Is it me? If the answer is yes, she jumps up leaving a space and chases the first person. Both girls race around the circle to get to the space and sit down The person without a seat continues the game Someone.etc. Rainbows! With a leader or grown up, have a go at the sliding puzzle and puzzling the past games on the rainbow website! /rainbows
Carry out a fundraising event for Teenage Cancer Trust, Jigsaw4U or The Christie Hospital, Manchester. This could be a coffee morning, jumble sale, bag pack, cake sale or a sponsored event such as a fancy dress event. Maybe you could use the jigsaw cupcake activity in your fundraiser! Or you could try this Give It Up fundraiser designed by The Christie Charity. This is how it works: Everybody in your unit gives up something they think they can t live without, such as Facebook, fast food, computer games, texting, cake, biscuits or desserts, fizzy drinks, pocket money, talking. Challenge everyone to give up for a day, a weekend, a week or even a month- This might vary depending on what has been given up and the age group, but make it challenging! If you register here, you can get sponsorship forms and posters to help with your event. donate your sponsorship money through these methods Rainbows! Decorate the border of a piece of A4 with pictures of things which make you smile. Every time you make somebody smile by being kind and helpful, draw a smiley face on your smile chart. Make somebody smile today! Count this towards Brownie Adventures, Guides Community Action and The Senior Section Look Wider! Guides & The Senior Section Take it further! In your patrols or small groups, research your chosen charity and report your findings to your unit. You could make a flyer to complement your fundraising event!
